ACCORDING TO THE . 120617 DESIGN MANUAL PART IV' THE BRIDGES CAN THEREFORE BE LOCATED ON CLASS C, D ORE ROADS ONLY, SINCE IF A BRIDGE IS TO BE LOCATED ON A CLASS A ORB ROAD AN ADDITIONAL DESIGN CHECK FOR 30 UNITS OF HB LOADING SHALL BE REQUIRED. THE WATERWAY OPENING IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE 50 YEAR FLOOD TO PASS WITH A MINIMUM CLEARANCE OF 500mm TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BRIDGE BEAMS. THE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS ARE DESIGNED FOR A PRESSURE FROM FLOW OF WATER WITH A VELOCITY OF 5 m/ sec. (THIS INCLUDES A FORCE FROM A 1.2m THICK RAFT OF DEBRIS OR IMPACT FROM A 1 TONNE LOG).

THE FOUNDATION LEVEL, IF NOT ON ROCK, SHALL NORMALLY BE WELL BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE DRY RIVERBED TO MINIMIZE THE CONSEQUENCE OF FUTURE SCOURING.

CONSTRUCTION JOINTS
10. THE POSITION AND FORM OF ANY CONSTRUCTION JOINT SHALL BE BRIDGE ENGINEER BEFORE CONCRETE IS PLACED AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS OR AS AGREED WITH THE

5 GENERALLY APPLICABLE VALUES OF ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE CANNOT BE GIVEN. BEFORE A DECISION IS MADE ON WHAT THE ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE SHOULD BE, THE BRIDGE ENGINEER SHALL CONTACT THE BRIDGES SECTION FOR ASSISTANCE. IF FOUND NECESSARY, THE MATERIALS BRANCH, FOUNDATION SECTION, WILL BE REQUESTED TO MAKE SOIL INVESTIGATIONS ON THE SITE.

CONCRETE COVER TO REINFORCEMENT


11. THE CONCRETE COVER TO REINFORCEMENT BARS SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS IF NOT OTHERWISE SHOWN:- GENERALLY = 30mm TOP OF BRIDGE DECK .40mm UNDERSIDE OF FOUNDATION SLAB = 50mm.

EXCAVATION.
ALL EXCAVATIONS SHALL BE EXCAVATED TO THE LINES AND DEPTH DIRECTED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER. ALL EXCAVATIONS TO BE APPROVED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER PRIOR TO ANY CONSTRUCTION WORK, INCLUDING LAYING OF BLINDING.

FILLING.
7. FILLING FOR STRUCTURES SHALL BE OF SELECTED MATERIAL, AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER BROUGHT UP IN HORIZONTAL LAYERS NOT EXCEEDING 150mm COMPACTED THICKNESS. EACH LAYER SHALL BE THOROUGHLY MIXED, WATERED AND DRIED AS NECESSARY, AND COMPACTED TO A MINIMUM DRY DENSITY OF OF 95% M.O.D. (BS 1377)

FORMWORK.
12. ALL FORMWORK SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER. ALL EXPOSED ARISES TO HAVE 25x 25mm CHAMFERS.

PROTECTION AND CURING OF CONCRETE.


13. THE CONCRETE SURFACE SHALL, IMMEDIATELY AFTER COMPLETION, BE PROTECTED FROM THE HARMFULL EFFECTS OF SUN, DRYING WINDS, RAINS, RUNNING WATER AND SHOCKS. IT SHALL BE KEPT DAMP FOR AT LEAST 5 DAYS AS FOLLOWS:-

8. THE FOLLOWING CONCRETE GRADES SHALL BE USED ( MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE IN mm. IS GRADE 15 (30) - BLINDING GRADE 25 (20) - ABUTMENTS AND PIERS 'GRADE 25(20) -BRIDGE DECKS GRADE 30( 20) -BRIDGE BEAMS CONCRETE SHALL NOT BE PLACED BEFORE THE BRIDGE ENGINEERS APPROVAL OF THE FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT HAS BEEN GIVEN. ALL CONCRETE SHALL BE THOROUGHLY COMPACTED BY INTERNAL VIBRATION TO PRODUCE A DENSE UNIFORM MASS WITHOUT SEGREGATION AND WITHOUT VOIDS. INDICATED IN BRACKET.)

VERTICAL FACES : THE FORMWORK SHALL BE LEFT IN PLACE, AND SPRAYED WITH WATER REGULARLY. HORIZONTAL: FACES. THE EXPOSED CONCRETE SURFACES SHALL BE COVERED BY A 50 -100mm LAYER OF SAND WHICH IS KEPT CONSTANTLY WET BY SPRAYING IT WITH WATER REGULARLY.

SCOUR PROTECTION.
14. RIF-RAP, GROUTED STONE PITCHING OR GABIONS FOR SCOUR PROTECTION OF ABUTMENTS AND PIERS AND FOR STABILIZATION OF EMBANKMENT SHALL BE PLACED AS DIRECTEC AND APPROVED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER.
