Debatesweretransmittedbystateruntelevisionandnewspapers.Themeasureswereentirely inconceivabletomostSudanesesincefiguresalreadyputinflationat40%andthecountryisranked26th mostexpensivecountryintheworld.

    OnSundaySeptember22nd,borrowingfrom18thcenturyMarieAntoinettesletthemeatcakethe presidentattemptedtoscapegoattheanonymousminoritywealthy,announcingonTVthatwereitnotfor hispresidencySudanesewouldnotbeenjoyinghotdogsorpizza. Individualsarrivedatfuelpumpstofindpricesat21SDG(C$4.9260)pergallon.TheaverageSudanese barelymakes400SDG($93.77)permonthandhe/shetypicallyprovidessustenancetofamilymembers andrelatives.Dieselwentfrom8pounds($1.87)agallonto14pounds($3.28)cookinggascontainers arenowpricedat25pounds($5.85)from15pounds($3.51).Thepricehikeshavemadethecostofliving impossibleforordinarypeople,andnaturally,sporadicpeacefuldemonstrationsensuedfromWad Medani,Khartoum,PortSudan,Nyala,elObeid,Gedaref,Kosti,andDamazin. Theresultingresponsehasbeenappalling.OnSeptember25thaninternetmonitoringcompanyreported alikelihoodofcoordinatedactiontoremoveSudanfromtheinternetfor24hours.Policefiredteargas, rubberbulletsandliveammunition.AccordingtocrediblereportsfromgroupsinSudan,HRW,and Reuters,thedeathtollhasexceeded100people.YassirArmanoftheSPLMNputsthenumberat180 dead.TheNationalIntelligenceSecurityService,anotoriousparamilitaryorganizationofpartyloyalists trainedindetentionandtorture,arereportedtohavebeendeployedandactivelyarresting,detaining,and interrogatingordinarycitizensandhumanrightsactivists.Gangsofvigilanteregimeloyalistsclothedin brightgreenarmyuniformsworksidebysidewithplainclothedsecuritypersonnellootingandburning shopsandattackingtheoppressedanddispossessed.Thedeadincludedschoolchildrenasyoungas 11and12yearsold. Canadaisachampionofhumanrightsanditisacentralthemeofourforeignpolicy.Canadaplayeda centralroleinthedraftingoftheUnitedNationsDeclarationofHumanRights.TheUNDeclarationcalls onallcountriestopromoteandprotecthumanrightsandthedutyofanystateistoprotectitscitizensand infailingtodosotheinternationalcommunity,andCanada,areobligedtorespond. Inadditiontoanofficialgovernmentresponsecondemningtheuseofviolenceagainstunarmed protesters,thefederalgovernmentofCanadamustcallforthefollowing: Anendtoviolenceandanendtotheuseofforceagainstprotesters. Anendtoarbitraryandillegalarrests. Anendtomediacensorship. Anendtoanobstructionoffreedomofassembly.

    Liberty,justice,freedomandprosperityarevaluesthatareenshrinedinourconstitution.Sudanese citizensalsosharethesevaluesbutfindthemselvesunabletoenjoythemduetoagovernmentthatholds acompletedisregardtothesanctityofhumanlife.ButthepeopleofSudanhavetakenbravestepsin breakinga24yearfearbarrierandhavedisplayedimmensecourageinthefaceofongoingbrutal repression.TheyneedourhelpandIurgeyoutodoeverythingyoucantomakesuretheirchantsof Freedom!arenotinvain.
