Procedures for Loading PID Tables into ITC503 Memory Please refer to Section 6.

12 (Test Mode) on page 29 and Section 9.4 (Auto-PID Configuration) on page 40 of the ITC503 Operators Handbook for further details on the following operations. Basically, Section 6.12 will tell you how to enter each of the Test Modes of the ITC503 and Section 9.4 will tell you how to enter the PID tables into memory. The steps are as follows: On the ITC503, hold both the RAISE and LOWER buttons simultaneously down while depressing the LOC/MEM button. If done correctly, the display will show tESt. This will change to t 00 shortly thereafter. You are now successfully in Test Mode. Use either the RAISE or LOWER button to select the individual tests. There are a total of seven. You will need to select Test 5 (displays as t 05). Keep in mind that you need to press RAISE or LOWER very slowly or the display will easily skip each test. But dont worry since once youre in Test Mode you can only select the tests to proceed further. Once you find what you want then go to the next step. Once Test 5 (displays as t 05) is shown, press the LOC/MEM button. This will allow you to enter the Display/Adjust Auto-PID Table Test Mode. If done correctly, you will see the L 01 on the display. You are now ready to enter the PID values for the range of temperatures you desire. There are a total of 23 temperature ranges you could use. But according to your PID table in the datasheet that comes with the Cryostat, you only have 2 ranges. One is from 0K to 80K and the other is from 80K to 300K. For your ITC503 Controller, Im guessing all the PID values for all 23 temperature ranges are zeros. This is why you can not use the Auto-PID feature. OK, on to loading these PIDs into the ITC503. With the Controller displaying the L 01 temperature range, hold the SET button and set your maximum temperature to 80K by using the RAISE button. Once done, hold the PROP, INT, and DERIV buttons one at a time and set their values to 50.0, 1.0, and 0.0 respectively using the RAISE button. Basically, this tells the Controller to set your first range of temperature from 0K to 80K to have the PID values of 50, 1, and 0 as on the datasheet. Press RAISE to have the display shows L 02 to set your second temperature range. Repeat the similar steps previously but set your maximum temperature to 300K and the PID values of 15.0, 2.5, and 0.5 respectively. Your Controller should now have the correct PID values for the 2 temperature ranges. At this point, find a pin, paper clip, or something small enough to fit into the hole labeled Limit. There is a switch in there that you need to depress. Once you have the pin, depress that Limit switch while pressing the LOC/MEM button. The display should show t 05 or something similar. You are basically backing out of the different modes you have entered previously. Repeat depressing the Limit switch and the LOC/MEM buttons again until the Controller resets. It will be quick but you should see the

Controller starting up again. You cant make a mistake here so dont worry if you go too far. The next step will explain what happens if you keep doing what youre doing. OK, now that the Controller resets and initializes again, hold the Limit switch again while pressing the LOC/MEM button one more time. You should see the word stor on the display. This means the Controller is writing all the PID values you have set for the temperature ranges into its memory. It is important that you do this step. Otherwise, your PID table will not be stored for use. This is why you shouldnt worry about messing up your Controller since everything will go back to the default settings once you have turned off your Controller without saving anything into memory. If you have done all of the above steps, your Controller should have the Auto PID feature now. Try to see if it will enable. Also, check to make sure the PIDs are correct for the temperature ranges you have set. If this doesnt work let me know and I will see if we will need to examine the Controller for some other problem. Keep in mind that this may take some time and you may not have the use of the Controller while we have it. If you can live with just entering the PIDs manually for the temperature ranges then you could avoid the hassle of the time consuming process to get the Auto PID feature enabled in the Controller. Oxford Instruments should have all of this prepared before shipping the equipments but I guess they dont have enough complaints from customers either.

GOOD LUCK!
