FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES AND ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOR Course Code: B 101 Course Objective: The business environment is dynamic

and the management of organizations in todays environment calls for specific skills and knowledge. On one hand it is essential that one understands the complex environment, its challenges and responds to the same, on the other hand it is important to understand the people who are working together in this business environment. The course Fundamentals of Management principles and Organisational Behavior is divided in two broad areas. The fundamentals of management principles provides the students with an understanding of the core management processes and the specific skills and knowledge required. These skills can be applied to any business situation but should be tailored to the specific need of the industry, organization and the function. Organisational Behaviour (OB) is the study of what people think, feel and how do they behave in and around organisations. It focuses on individual employee behavior, value systems, attitudes, decisions, perceptions and emotional responses. The course is essential for all students to understand how to manage various functions and people for effectiveness and efficiency in an organisation. Credit Units: 04

Learning Outcomes: The learning outcomes that students are expected to achieve in this course include: Acquire conceptual understanding of the various managerial functions and the required skills Understand the significance of effective management functions in the achievement of broader organizational goals. Understand the different perspectives of individual behaviours displayed in organisations. Develop an understanding of how the study of organizational behaviour and organisational practices can aid in improving the performance and well being of people at work.

Unit II Introduction to Functions of Management Planning Nature and Scope, Types of Planning, Nature & elements of planning. Stages in planning, levels of planning Decision making process, models of decision making Organising, Concept, Organisation theories, Forms of Organisation structure Departmentation, Span of Control, Delegation of Authority, Decentralization Staffing, Concept, Manpower Planning, Job Design, Recruitment and Selection, Training and Development, Performance Appraisal Leadership styles and Leadership effectiveness Motivation, Concept and theories of motivation, motivation and performance Management control, Concept, Types of Control, Methods and stages of Control Unit III Introduction to Organisational Behavior Concept and Trends in Organisational Behavior, Challenges to OB Individual Behaviour and Processes Perception, Concept, Importance of Perception Personality, Concept, Nature and Types of Personalities and their work behaviour Emotions and Workplace Attitudes Unit IV Organisational Processes Organisational Power and Politics, Concept, Sources of Power, Misuse of power Organisational Citizenship Behaviour, Counterproductive Behaviour in Organisations Organisational Culture, Concept, Elements of culture, Implications of Organisational Culture Learning in Organisations, Concept and Theories Pedagogy: The course will be taught in an interactive manner. The concepts shall be mostly shared through slides, video clips as required and further reinforced through individual or group activities such as role plays, exercises, games, case discussions. presentations etc. aimed to equip students with skills to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical situations. They may also be required to work on field projects. Students are expected to read management news and articles also to improve their understanding of the said areas.
