MATH1011: Applications of Calculus
Web Page: http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/UG/JM/MATH1011/ Lecturer: Dr Emma Carberry, Clinton Boys, Ross Ogilvie

Semester 1, 2013

Quiz 2 will be held in tutorials on the week beginning 27 May. You must sit for the quiz during the tutorial in which you are enrolled. The quiz will be multiple-choice. You will be allowed 40 minutes for the quiz. You should bring your student card, non-programmable calculator and pens. Your answers must be written in pen, not pencil. At the end of the quiz, all quiz materials will be collected. Quiz 2 focuses on the material from lectures 9-17 and tutorials 7-11 although some questions may also utilise material from earlier in the course. Some practice questions are provided below. It is recommended that you work through these exercises. There are many other useful exercises available in your tutorial question sheets and in the course notes. 1. Evaluate f (x, y ) = ln(x + y )(x2 y 2 + 2xy ) at: (a) (1, 1) (b) (2, 0) (c) (1, 2) (d) (4, 1)

2. Find all rst order partial derivatives of: (a) f (x, y ) = exy (x2 + 2y 2 5xy ); (b) g (x, y ) =
xy ; x2 y 2

(c) h(x, y ) = (ex + ln y )5 .

3. Find all rst and second order partial derivatives of z = sin(xy ). 4. Find all points where the tangent planes to the following surfaces are horizontal: (a) z = x2 2y 2 + 4xy 30x 12y + 7; 5. Evaluate: (a) 1 + 4 + 7 + + 304; (b) 1 + 2 + 4 + + 64;

7. Find and classify the critical points of the following functions. Evaluate the function at all critical points. 1

(a) f (x, y ) = x2 + 3xy + y 2 (b) f (x, y ) = 9 2x + 4y x2 4y 2 8. Calculate: (a) (b) (c) (x2 + 3x 5)dx;

9. Find the tangent plane to the surface z = y 3 sin x + xy 2 + 3y 4 when (x, y ) = (, 1). 10. Find the maximum and minimum values of the function f (x, y ) = (x2 y 2 )(x2 + y 2 2) on the closed disk x2 + y 2 2, and specify where these maximum and minimum values occur. 11. A radioactive sample of W grams decays at a rate given by dW = 25e0.05t , dt where t is measured in years. How much of the sample will decay away over the rst twenty years?
