UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA

Introduction
Background
University of Malaya Medical Society(UM MedSoc) was established in 19XX. For us medical students from the oldest medical school of our nation, UM MedSoc served as the body to bond, represent, function and contribute to society as a single entity. Racial barriers were breached, lifelong ties and memories were built upon this foundation. In maintaining the prestige of our beloved historical med school since its establishment, generations of students have strived to not only organize events but also to initiate community outreach programs. Directed at the two main objectives of building competent doctors & also altruistic Malaysian citizens of the future, MedSoc now runs activities and events both within and beyond university grounds. MedSoc actively involves and seek more sustainable cooperation and support from the corporate world and nonprot based organizations.

Presidents Note
It is my greatest pleasure and honor to be given this opportunity of leading MedSoc. My team and I will strive to make full use of this term and responsibility shouldered upon us. It comes at an important time where it has been much raised that Malaysian students are mere book-hugging nerds even through tertiary education and is of no competition or much value to employers or society. As a university student myself, student bodies such as MedSoc serves an utmost important task and duty to rectify this. We want to and need to send the message out that, we are to be a part of society in no time and we are both ready and capable to contribute. Therefore, the direction for the MedSoc team this year is to wage war against racial segregation amongst the fraternity, to forge closer bonding between seniors and juniors and most importantly to have us reach out more to the community to better serve and contribute in the ways we can. With the amazing and enthusiastic team I am a part of, I have faith that we will be on that path in no time. Khoo Teng Shin

Baktisiswa ( 8th- 13th May 2012 )
Baktisiswa is a community service program which is held annually to ignite the passion of students in self-volunteering to promote health-care in remote areas that requires attention from the community. It is the biggest event of MEDSOC since its inception and has been held for more then 30 years. The venue is usually held in East Malaysia and involves extensive collaboration with each locations Health Ocer. To enhance bonding between medical students and the local community, a 4 day homestay & Foster Family program was held this year in Kampung Telipok, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This is to allow the development of medical students in a more holistic and comprehensive approach in line with MedSocs vision with the integration of imparting social skills into the program. The health screening activities were carried out to screen local communities for risk factors and common noncommunicable disease such as Diabetes Mellitus and hypertension. As for the module on health promotion and education, participants visited schools and utilized interesting approaches to educate school children on basic hygiene, hand-washing techniques and dengue prevention. Besides that, activities for bonding and interaction with residents were also emphasized throughout the program. There was the Kenduri Night, Sports and Games, Morning Trekkings and a visit to the Sabah Zoo with all the families of Kampung Telipok. Baktisiswa 2012 was a successful and meaningful event where bonds were forged between medical students and the local communities around us. The experiences and memories were priceless and the continuation of this project will certainly propel medical students to become a better, community-loving and ultimately better doctors in the future.
