Pipe insulation in concealed areas such as pipe chases, crawl spaces and above suspended ceilings shall be covered with factory applied vapor barrier jacket. Pipe insulation in exposed areas unless otherwise shown shall be covered with factory applied presize vapor barrier jacket. In high abuse areas such as traffic areas in equipment rooms and kitchens, insulation shall be covered with factory or field applied aluminum jacket. Cold Piping: Fine fiberglass insulation, with factory applied vapor barrier jacket, molded to conform to piping, "K" value at 24 C. maximum .035 W/m/ C, the insulation density is 24 kg./M3. Hot Piping: Fine fiberglass insulation with factory applied general purpose jacket, molded to conform to piping, "K" value at 24 C. maximum .034 W/m/ C, the insulation density is 24 kg./M3. Refrigerant Piping: Foamed plastic of closed cell structure, "K" value at 24 C. maximum 0.04 W/m/ C maximum water vapor transmission rating of 0.1 perms, 16kg/M3minimum insulation density. Hot Equipment: Rigid fiberglass insulation, "K" value at 24C. maximum .035 W/m/ C, the insulation density is 24 kg./M3. Cold Equipment: Rigid fiberglass insulation with factory applied reinforced aluminum foil vapor barrier, "K" value at 24C. maximum .035 W/m/ C, the insulation density is 24 kg./M3. Piping exposed to weather: Piping shall be insulated and jacketed as specified above for the applicable service except that a vapor barrier jacket is not required on hot pipelines. Pipe insulation shall be covered with an aluminum jacket. For hot piping, aluminum jacket shall be factory or field applied. For cold water piping, aluminum jacket shall be field applied.

PART 3.01

EXECUTION

PREPARATION A. Do not install covering before piping and equipment has been tested and approved. Ensure surface is clean and dry prior to installation. Ensure insulation is dry before and during application. Finish with systems at operating conditions.

B.

3.02

INSTALLATION A. Ensure insulation is continuous through inside walls. Pack around pipes with fire proof self-supporting insulation material, fully sealed. Insulate fittings valves, flanges, strainers, flexible connections and expansion joints. Terminate insulation neatly with plastic material trowelled on bevel. Finish insulation neatly at hangers, supports and other protrusions. Locate insulation or cover seams in least visible locations. Provide recovering jackets on exposed insulation throughout, including equipment room Insulation located in crawl spaces, pipe shafts and suspended ceiling space is not considered exposed. Use pre-sized paper under recovering at uneven insulated surfaces. Cover insulation exposed to outdoors with 16.5 kg/M3 coated glass base sheet with aluminum bands on 203 mm centers. Lap joints 76 mm minimum and seal with compatible waterproof lap cement. Rigid insulation inserts shall be installed as required under outside hangers. Inserts shall be of equal thickness to the adjoining insulation and shall be provided with vapor barrier seals where required. Insulation inserts shall not be less than the following lengths: 12 to 65 mm pipe size 75 to 150 mm pipe size 200 to 250 mm pipe size 300 mm and over pipe size H. 250 mm long 300 mm long 400 mm long 550 mm long

B.

C. D. E.

F.

G.

Galvanized metal shields shall be applied between hangers or supports and the pipe insulation. Shields shall be formed to fit the insulation and shall extend up to the center line of the pipe and the length specified for the insulation hanger inserts less 100 mm to allow for vapor sealing butt joints on each side of shields. Cold Piping: Cover fittings and valves with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Cover with open mesh glass cloth sealed with vapor barrier sealant. Seal lap joints with 100% coverage of vapor barrier sealant and adhesive. Seal butt joints with 100 mm wide strips of vapor barrier sealed with vapor barrier adhesive. For exposed fittings and valves, apply hydraulic setting cement paste over insulation material before applying recovering.

Hot Piping: Cover fittings and valves with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Recover. For exposed fittings and valves apply hydraulic setting cement paste over insulating material before apply canvas recovering. Refrigerant Piping: Cover fittings and valves with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Apply with edges tightly butted. Seal joints with vapor barrier tape or sealer. Roof Drains and Vents: Adhere flexible insulation with adhesive applied in 150 mm wide strips on 400 mm centers. Provide 16 gauge annealed tie wire tied, spiral wound or half hitched at 400 mm centers for securing insulation until adhesive sets. Butt insulation and seal joints and breaks with 50 mm of foil adhered over joint. Equipment: Apply insulation with edges tightly butted, joints staggered and secured in place by steel bands. Where necessary weld on suitable anchors. Provide sufficient clearance around openings for normal operation of equipment. Finish hot surface insulation with 25 mm galvanized hexagonal mesh and coat with hydraulic setting insulation cement. Finish cold surface insulation joints with 102 mm wide strips of vapor barrier sealed with vapor barrier adhesive finish insulation with heavy coat of vapor barrier mastic applied over whole body. Finish with a final coat of cement containing 25% by weight of Portland Cement. Recover and provide an extra coat of lagging adhesive. Repair separation of joints or cracking of insulation due to thermal movement or poor workmanship. Below ground Pipe Insulation: Prior to application, the bare surfaces of the insulation shall be coated with a thin application of a high strength gypsum cement. Insulation shall be applied with butt joints staggered, and joints shall be tightly butted and sealed with bedding compound. Butt joints shall be sealed with vapored barrier coating. Insulation used shall be water resistant polystyrene type.
