Examples and Homework Questions on Engineering Statistics

For all of the following examples and questions, use and/or refer to the Gaussian table provided below. Please see instructions on Page 7 before solving homework questions.

Ex: To find the critical value t/2,, find the desired area from the table for the given , and then read the corresponding t-value. For 95% confidence, for 10 degrees of freedom, we want =0.05 Therefore we want tp such that the area to the left of tp is 0.975. The value sought is 2.23

The first two examples are from the book Engineering, that some of you used last semester.

Please ignore the equation numbers. These are similar to those I have put in our lecture notes on the web (Lecture 7)

Standardized value corresponding to a zero mean and unit variance sample

Mean and variance values obtained in the previous example.

The next few examples are from the book Schaums Outline Series on Probability and Statistics (by Murray R. Spiegel). I recommend that you study, at least the examples, before you leave for the break. That way, you can ask me if you have any questions. Please feel free to come to my office and/or send e-mail, if you there is anything that is not clear to you.

HOMEWORK PROBLEMS

Due: April 26, 2003

The first few problems are from the Engineering book (from Chapter 8), and the remaining ones are from the Schaums Probability and Statistics book (from Chapter 4, 6.). I will not ask you to solve all questions below. In fact, everyone will solve an equal number of, but different set of problems, based on class order. Note that 26-36 is listed for everyone. I expect you to do at least 6 of these. You pick the 6 you want, but must include two from each subsection. The questions have been assigned at random, since they are all of equal difficulty. Because the solutions to all questions are rather straightforward, correct numerical answer is required for full credit. Partial credit will not be awarded with the exception of minor mistakes. Check and double your check your answers before submitting. Bonus / Extra credit: Solve 22 and receive 20% bonus. Solve 30 and receive 30%. Solve all 36 and get 40% bonus added to this homework.
