2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? Ethnocentrism is the tendency to assume that ones culture and way of life is superior to all others. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society because it often clouds ones view to openly accept different cultures instead of holding contempt towards anothers cultures. This contempt held towards other cultures can lead to prejudice, ethnophaulism, and eventually to the act of discrimination. Prejudices and discrimination can destroy a society.
3. Define emigration and immigration. Emigration can be defined as leaving ones country by settling in another country (Schaefer, 19). Immigration can be difined as leaving ones country and settling in another country as a permanent resident (19).
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are label and identified? Some of the ways groups of people are identified through classifying minority groups in one of the main four categories; race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. But there are others such as age, disability status, physical appearance, and sexual orientation are among some other factors that are used to label subordinate groups of people.
5. Why do people label and group other people? people label and group people because they are everyday used commonly used labels. From an early age we are raised to believe the human species revolves around the phrase, Survival of the Fittest. Growing up we continue to hear other phrases and it is reinforced in school by family and peers such as, This is a dog eat dog world. Even in school kids place other kids in groups such as; jocks, nerds, rebels, emo/gothic and go as far as labeling them by calling them nerd, athelets, outcast, goth. This labeling and grouping of people have been socially constructed. Yet these social constructions can have a powerful impact, wether self-applied or applied by others and can lead to ethnocentrism.
6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain. Culture can be defined as the qualities in a person or society like language, skills, arts, customs, etc. Culture is not limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds. Culture is in everything from who we are as a people to what we do. Racial and ethnic backgrounds are very easily influenced by other outside cultures. United States is such an accepting country, we are one of the best multi-cultural countries in the world.
