MAGNETOM Vision

MAGNETOM Vision is a diagnostic imaging device. As such, the device generates and displays transverse, sagittal, coronal, and paraxial whole body images. In addition to these characteristics, MAGNETOM Vision acquires in-vivo spectroscopic information about human tissue. These methods are based on the physical principle of magnetic resonance (MR). During the measurement, the patient is placed in a strong homogeneous magnetic field. The hydrogen nuclei (protons) distributed throughout the entire body tissue generate signals when stimulated by an RF field. These signals are processed into images or spectra by a computer. The images and spectra reflect the spatial distribution of protons in the human body. Image and spectral appearance depend on such tissue specific-parameters as proton density, spin-lattice relaxation time (T1), spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and flow velocity of the protons. Pathologic processes in the human body cause these parameters to change resulting in different contrast behaviors in the MR image or variations in the spectral peak amplitudes of spectroscopic measurements.

New features

MAGNETOM Vision is a 1.5T MR system equipped with an actively shielded superconducting solenoid magnet. The high homogeneity and small fringe field of this magnet allow for highly accurate MR measurements as well as very small area requirements for system installation. This system is also equipped with a high-field, rapid switching gradient system which performs a variety of new fast imaging techniques with the appropriate optional software and hardware.

MAGNETOM Vision
System configuration
The most important components of MAGNETOM Vision are: - Magnet with patient table - RF system - Gradient system - Computer system - Operating console - Documentation devices - System software

1-3
1

Magnet

The high homogeneity superconducting magnet generates a homogeneous magnetic field with a field strength of 1.5 Tesla. The main field is oriented in horizontal direction along the cylindrical axis of the magnet. The magnet is connected to a power supply integrated into the electronics cabinet for the purpose of ramping for service activies. This magnet uses helium only to maintain the superconducting state of the magnet coils. Helium boil-off is reduced through the use of a cold head which removes heat from the magnet cryogen vessels. This heat is transferred to a cooling unit in the computer room. The cooling unit is connected to the on-site water cooling system.

Patient table

The patient table supports the patient and enables proper patient positioning prior to the measurement. The power-assisted table is moved into the magnet bore where the anatomy under examination is positioned in the magnet issocenter. The table motion can be locked and released. Maximum patient weight is 160 kg. With this load all system functions are ensured. The safety factors according to DIN IEC 601-1 are maintained.

Gradients

The desired slice position is accurately defined with the gradient system which comprises the X, Y, and Z magnetic field gradient coils. The coils are designed as solenoidal coils (Z axis) or saddle coils (X,Y axis), which are integrated into the bore of the magnet. A gradient amplifier is incorporated into the electronics cabinet.

RF system

MAGNETOM Vision
1

The RF system consists of a transmit and a receive section. The hardware for RF pulse generation ( small signal part and power amplifier ) is integrated in the electronics cabinet as well as the hardware for processing the received and preamplified MR signals.

Transceiver coil
A CP transmit/receive body coil is integrated in the bore of the magnet.

Receive coils
All receive coils are automatically tuned and actively decoupled. They are connected to a coil port which is located on the right front cover next to the patient table.

CP spine coil
MAGNETOM Vision makes use of a receive only CP spine coil. This coil is located in a pad which allows the coil to be moved under the patient without having to actually reposition the patient. A software switch allows the user to select the body coil for a large FOV localizer or the CP spine coil for high resolution spine images while the CP spine coil is still plugged in.

Head coil

For head examinations, the patients head is placed inside the CP head coil before moving the patient table into the magnet. This coil achieves a higher signal-to-noise ratio compared to the body coil due to smaller sensitive volume.

General purpose coils

Small general purpose coils provide especially detailed images due to their size and local application. The coils are designed as wrap-around coils for applications in the neck region, extremity examinations, TMJ and other specialized exams.

Computer system
The MAGNETOM Vision computer system comprises two main subsystems: - the image processor - the host computer Both components are integrated into the electronics cabinet.

The image processor comprises a number of pipelined microprocessors and memory for calculating the Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The resulting image is displayed on the monitor screen immediately after the measurement is completed.

Host computer
An integrated SUN based host computer controls all peripheral devices, image selection, and image storage. It contains a hard disk with image and raw data memories.

Operating console

The MR operating console (MRC) controls and monitors the main functions of MAGNETOM Vision and the NUMARIS software: Patient registration, MR measurement, image reconstruction, image display and evaluation as well as archiving and documentation. Commands are entered via the mouse or keyboard.

Documentation devices
MAGNETOM Vision archiving and documentation devices comprise: - an optical disk drive - a camera (optional, typically a laser camera) used for exposing reconstructed MR images on film. - a laser printer (optional, post-script compatible) for printing images, text data, spectra and other data on paper. - a video printer (optional) for hardcopy images on paper

Cryogen supply
General

4-1
4

For satisfactory operation of the MR system, liquid as well as gaseous helium is required. Because of the physical characteristics and the price of liquid helium, the cryogen has to be handled according to the special instructions given in the subsequent pages. As early as in the planning phase, the structural and logistic aspects of gas supply for the MR system have to be established. The liquid helium is transported in containers especially designed for this purpose (dewars).

NOTICE

Every reputable manufacturer provides liquid helium dewars of nonmagnetizable material. However, cylinders for gaseous helium are usually made from magnetic material. These cylinders must remain outside the vicinity of the magnet when it is energized.

By setting a specific amount of overpressure at the gaseous helium cylinder, the liquid helium in the dewar is transferred to the magnet cryostat via a flexible, vacuum-insulated transfer line and syphon. Note the instructions given on "Handling cryogenic liquids" in the "Safety" register of this manual.

Cryogen supply
4

Since the vessel dimensions for liquid and gaseous helium must meet certain specifications, the following issues have to be clarified with the vendor prior to delivery: - Access routes - Width of the doorways - Size of elevators - Height of rooms and hallways (refer to Register 3) - Temporary and permanent storage area for gas cylinders

Transport methods for helium

4-3
4

Liquid helium is transported from the manufacturer to the magnet in dewars holding between 100 to 450 liters of liquid helium. The dewars are transported in special trucks equipped with an elevator platform. Special containers are available for air-freighting liquid helium.

4

The height of the cryogen dewar including the transfer line with the syphon should not exceed the dimensions given in the figure shown below. The value of 1900 mm includes the 16 mm screw connection.

Fig. 2

Maximum dimensions of the cryogen dewar

A minimum room height of 3.7 m is required to insert the syphon into the dewar (Fig. 2). If this is not possible, the syphon with shut-off valve should be inserted outside the building.

Cryogen supply
Recommended pressure regulator system

4-5
4

The cylinder with gaseous helium used to increase the pressure in the dewar consists of the following components:

Gas cylinder with wall support

To protect the gas cylinders from falling over, they are attached to the wall with the support included in the shipment. We recommend the use of two gas cylinders. One cylinder is permanently attached to the gas supply line, the other is used as a spare cylinder.

Pressure regulator in the storage area

The pressure regulator permanently installed in the storage area reduces the maximum cylinder pressure (approx. 200 bar) to 6 or 8 bar.

Transfer line

The permanently installed copper pipe (8mm in diameter) connects the pressure regulator in the storage area with the pressure regulator at the fill station via Swage lock couplers. As an alternative, sufficiently pressure-resistant synthetic transfer lines may be used. However, only synthetic tubing should be run through the filter plate.

Pressure regulator at the fill station

The pressure regulator permanently installed at the fill station reduces the pressure in the transfer line from approx. 6 to 8 down to max. 0.3 bar for transferring liquid helium.

Connection to the cryogen dewar

A synthetic hose (inside diameter is approx. 10mm ) connects the output of the pressure regulator at the fill station with the cryogen dewar. For safety reasons, both ends of the hose should be secured with cable barbs.

NOTICE

When the magnet is shipped cold, it leaves the factory with a fill level of approximately 70%. To keep the helium boil-off to a minimum, the cold head should be put into operation as soon as the magnet arrives at the site.
