Tell students we will be learning about direction in todays lesson. Select a student to come and stand at the front of the class. Ask another person to stand next to, another to stand in the middle, another to stand behind etc.. Write words on chart paper. Eg next to, middle, behind, in front of, to the right, to the left. Ask students how they know which is left and which is right. Show students how they can make an L shape using their left hands by holding their arms straight in front of them, palms facing away, fingers together, thumbs stuckout Remember, L is for left! Stick a duck activity, for students to stick ducks on top, below, right, left, next to, inside items on chart paper (eg tree, house, oval, cloud, dog, car) Draw arrows on chart paper. Ask students what they might mean ^ v, ^^vv, < >, <<>>, ^^< >vv. Write the direction word next to arrows eg forwards, backwards, left, right etc Lets copy the direction the arrows are pointing using our bodies. Students to move 1 step forwards, the 1 step backwards. Then ask students to move 2 steps forward, then 2 steps backwards. Move 1 step to the left and 1 to the right. Then 2 steps to the left and 2 to the right Start to combine movements, eg 2 steps forwards, 1 step left, 1 step right, 2 steps backwards, to make up a simple dance routine.

Play some music whilst practicing directions

Arrange 12 toys, three on each of the four shelves in pigeon holes. Have students answer where a certain toys are located on the shelves. Eg Im thinking of a toy on the shelves. Its above the rabbit and to the left of the pig. What toy am I thinking of? Its directly below the elephant and one box to the left, etc Play together as a group until students are more confident. Place co-ordinates along bottom of shelves A-C, and to left of shelves 1-4 with blue tac Ask which toy is located at a particular co-ordinate eg C3? Then select a toy. Ask students to give the co-ordinates. Have students come up with their own questions for a class member to answer. In pairs, one student poses 2 x problems for a peer to answer. (Write prompt questions on WB) 1. What are the co-ordinates for the [name of toy eg pig]? (Where is the pig located?) 2. Which toy is located at [the co-ordinate eg C3]? Students swap roles Students to stick animals/fruit to laminated board at various co-ordinates. Then say the co-ordinates for the location of animals Backup worksheet if needed Ask students to follow my instructions and draw a picture on chart paper of IWB. Eg draw a circle on the top, top right, bottom, bottom left, middle etc. Little Red Riding Hood worksheet (co-ordinates for pictures, then draw objects at the correct coordinates). Or Slide worksheet (nest to, on, above, up, below, beside, underneath)
