Grummm-rummm-rummm, the 350 small block roars to life and idles throatily. I've been hearing my truck come to life for over a year now. The 4 barrel Eldebrock carburetor gives me chills every time. I bought the 1969 Chevrolet C10 from my grandmother when I was 14. I've watched my parents drive it many times. The sound makes people turn and watch, and many a car guy has given us a thumbs up as we drive by. On the outside it's nothing but rust and miss-matched parts, but under the hood makes mechanics bow. Did I mention I have chrome Edelbrock valve covers too? I have dreamed so many times about driving my truck, but never expected to get to so soon. See we used to live in town, so I always expected to need my permit before I could get behind the wheel. Then out of the blue, we received a phone call and were offered a job living on a ranch. Soon after moving I started driving the car down the dirt road, and soon was driving the ranch truck all around. Both these vehicles have automatic transmissions. My truck is a 4 speed, rebuilt and geared low for torque and towing. Then my break came. The owners of the ranch gave me my own job fencing. My dad needed the ranch truck with all

the tools out in the field where he was plowing. To do my job I would have to use my own truck! My mom brought home the gas, and I nearly ran to the barn to put it in my truck. My dad came down, and helped me get it started. It had been sitting for a while. Soon we had it out, and I was washing the dust off. Then it was time. With me in the driver's seat and my dad next to me, he said, Okay, push in the clutch and hold it while you turn the key. Vroom, my motor came to life. I turned to him and asked, What next? Put the truck in second gear, towards you and down then. give it some gas and slowly take your foot off the clutch. I did what he told me, or thought I did, but forward is not what happened. The truck jerked violently and died. That's normal the first time. My dad told me smiling. It took me a few more tries, but soon I was driving around the yard and shifting into third. Then I had some practice backing up so I could hook it to the work trailer in the morning. As I pulled up in-front of the house to park, I saw my mom smiling in the window. After shutting off the engine and my dad went in the house, I popped the hood and rechecked all my fluids except the radiator. The engine was hot, and I didn't feel like taking a boiling shower. That would have to wait till morning. I took my time cleaning the last of the trash out from when we used it to move, and made sure everything was ready for me to start working in the morning. I was still grinning so hard my face was beginning to hurt, but it was so worth it. I was driving MY truck! This may not seem to be a big deal to most, but like I said I bought the truck from my grandmother. I still owed her a lot of money on it. Just after Thanksgiving last year she had three heart attacks, and passed away in January leaving the truck to me. She was only 60 when she died, and had never learned how to drive. Whenever I drive my truck, or work on the restorations, I feel closer to her.

I know her memory will always remain alive as I roar down the road in my truck.
