Nearly 8,000 youth ages 12 to 17 drink alcohol for the first time each day. Smokeless tobacco use is on the rise among boys ages 12 - 17. 1 in 5 teens abuse prescription medications not prescribed to them. Alcohol abuse contributes to the deaths of 1,700 college students each year. 43 percent of 12th graders report having used marijuana. Underage drinkers account for 21.1 percent of all alcohol consumed in Ohio. 76 percent of Ohio students 9 -12 have consumed alcohol. More 8th graders have tried inhalants than any other illicit drug. Annually, 2,500 Ohioans ages 12 to 20 are admitted for alcohol treatment. 15 percent of 8th graders report having used marijuana.

Findings From Teen Dating Study Available _______________________________ Technology, Teen Dating Violence and Abuse, and Bullying (NCJ 243296, 198 pp.) presents findings showing that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender teenagers are at much greater risk of dating abuse than their heterosexual counterparts. It also reports that transgender teens are especially vulnerable to abuse.
