DUE : M 3/22/2010
Points: 20

Test #2 is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, 2010 March 31, 2010 (note change of date) (covers through dislocation theory)

1. On neat diagrams of unit cells, show the slips systems: a. fcc:{111}<110>, b. bcc:{110}<111>, c. hcp: {10 1 0} < 11 2 0 > and (11 2 2)[ 1 100]
2. a. Write down the strains and stresses due to screw (b=bk, t=k) and edge (b=bi, t=k) dislocations. b. What is line tension (define), and write down the expressions for line tension for screw and edge dislocations. c. What is the force (F) required to keep a dislocation curved with radius of curvature, R? 3. 4.

& = bv where is the dislocation density and v is their mean velocity (Orowan equation) Show that Using Peach-Koehler formula for forces on dislocations due to an applied stress, derive expressions for the forces on the following dislocations and indicate the direction of force. [make comments as to how the dislocation may move due to these forces] (a) A screw dislocation with Burgers vector along z and applied stress is xx. (b) A screw dislocation with Burgers vector along z and applied stress is xz. (c) A screw dislocation with Burgers vector along z under hydrostatic stress (i.e., ij=ij implying that the 0 0 stress state is 0 0 ). (d) An edge dislocation with Burgers vector, bi and line vector along z due to an

applied stress xy. (e) The same dislocation as in (d) but under hydrostatic stress (i.e., ij=ij). 5. a. Derive the expression for the forces between two like (or parallel) screw dislocations. b. Show schematically the forces (x and y) between two edge dislocations (with parallel Burgers vectors = k ). along x-axis and line vectors along z-axis: b=bi and t 6. In a class-work problem, we considered a cylindrical Ni single crystal (fcc) with diameter of 0.1 mm pulled in tension with a stress of 1000 MPa. [see fig.]. The loading direction is along [ 1 01] while the slip system is ( 11 1)[ 1 10]. We calculated the resolved shear stress along the slip direction in the slip plane. a. An edge dislocation (AB) is situated perpendicular to the slip direction (see Fig.) of the slip system and pinned at two points (A and B) separated by 1000 . If the Burgers vector of the dislocation is along the slip direction, what will be its direction and magnitude? b. Determine the radius of curvature of the dislocation in part (a) above due to the applied stress? c. Compute the minimum applied load (normal to the specimen cross-section) required for the pinned dislocation (AB) to operate as a Frank-Read source d. If the dislocation line in the figure is a screw dislocation, what will be its Burgers vector (magnitude and representation)?

A stress, (MPa) =

acts on an edge dislocation with b along [1 1 0] and line

vector along [11 2 ] in Ni (fcc, G = 110 GPa, a = 3.6 ).

What is the magnitude of the Burger's vector in mm and how is it represented? What are the x,y,z components of the unit line vector ? Calculate the force per unit length (N/mm) on the dislocation due to the applied stress state? (Hint. use Peach-Koehler formula) What is the force (per unit length) along the Burger's vector (i.e., perpendicular to the dislocation line? If the dislocation is pinned between two points separated by 1000, determine the radius of curvature. If AB were a screw dislocation what will be its Burgers vector? Determine the force on the screw dislocation due to the applied stress, ij.
