AN ANALYSIS OF “FUN WITH ENGLISH” TV

PROGRAM IN HELPING THE STUDENTS TO


MASTER VOCABULARY
( ESPECIALLY AT FIRST CLASS OF SMP N 4
BENGKULU )

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
I. 1. Background

English is an important language, because it is an international language. In English,

there are four language skills that students learn. They are reading, writing, speaking and

listening. Learning language is defined as a process of developing language competence in a

communication activity. Vocabulary is total number of words in a language that known to a

person ( Oxford : 1995). It is one of the most important options of language, particularly for

someone who want to learn a foreign language.

There are many ways to master the vocabulary, such as learning by picture, by

songs, by explanation, and by watching English TV Program. The Department of National

Education launched Televisi Edukasi (TV-E). It was hoped that the television programs would

become the media for broadening the distribution of education information and would become

the media for public education. In Indonesia, TV Education program have been there since

12th of October 2004. this program consist of many education program. There are Bahasa

Indonesia program, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and of course English

program. One of the English program is “Fun With English”. In Fun With English, there are

some techniques to study English. There are songs, games, conversation, etc. and it is can

give the contribution for students in mastering vocabulary. In this research, the researcher

interest to analyze the role of “Fun With English “ TV program in help the students to master

vocabulary.

I.2. Research Question


Based on the background above, the problem of this research is formulated as : What

is the role of “Fun With English TV program in help the students to master vocabulary

especially at first class of SMP N 4 Bengkulu?

I.3. Research Objective

The objective of the research is to find out and analysis the role of Fun With English

TV program in help the students to master vocabulary especially at first class of SMP N 4

Bengkulu.
I.4. Significance Of The Research

The result of this research is to describe how far the role of Fun With English program

to help the student to study English to give contribution to developing of teaching and

learning English process, especially to development of vocabulary.

I.5. Limitation Of The Research

This research is limited to analyze the role of Fun With English TV program in help

the students in master vocabulary especially at first class of SMP N 4 Bengkulu.

I.6. Definition Of Key Term

1. Fun With English program is one of program in TV Edukasi which study about study

English. In this program there are song, games, conversation, etc.

2. Program is a planned, coordinated group or activities, procedures, etc, for a specific

purpose, or a facility offering such a series of activities. (http://dictionary.com)

3. Vocabulary is total number of words used by or known to a particular people/ group

of person.( Oxford :1995)

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1. Fun With English

Fun With English is one of the English program in TV edukasi ( TV E ). In this

program, there are many programs that can help the students to study English, such as Let

sing together, Games, and this program can help the student to master vocabulary.

2.2. Definition Of Vocabulary

Vocabulary is total number of words used by or known to a particular people/ group

of person.( Oxford :1995). Based on Lamuhidin’s in H.S. Mursalim (1988:7 ), vocabulary is


the words having meaning when heard or seen even though not produced by the individual

himself to communicate with others.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD
3.1. Research Design

This research will use descriptive qualitative method. According to Frankle and

Wallen (1979:166), descriptive research is the research that tried to describe and interpret

what condition or relationship that exist, opinions that are held, processes that are going on,

effects that are evident or trends that are developing. In other word, a descriptive research is a

study that concerns about the actual problems which happening when the study conducting.

Related to this, Smith in Merriam, 1991 described that descriptive study is to describe

phenomenon such as a program, an event, a person, a process, an institution, or a social group.

According to Maxwel (1996 : 17 ) the qualitative method is focus on specific situation or

people and its emphasis on words rather than number. It means that the result of the research

will describe the role of Fun with English Program in help the students to master vocabulary.

3.2. Subject of The Research

The subject of this research are the SMP students of first class at SMP N 4 Bengkulu

city who like watching Fun With English program.

3.3. Instrument

The instrument will use in this research is the observation check list and questionnaire

sheet to know the students’ reason in watching Fun with English program.

3.4 Data Analysis Technique

The data in this research will describe the reason from observation and questionnaire

to know the role of Fun With English program in help the students to master vocabulary.
