Photovoltaic Standalone Plants

ECO-FRIENDLY-POWERFUL-SAFE

Power of the Nature

The earth has a high potential on renewable energy forms like sun, wind, water, biomass and geothermic. With these energy forms we are able to produce environmentally friendly electricity. All renewable energy forms are on human scales available. With an expectation of life of multiple billions of years, is the sun our longest energy source. The technology of photovoltaic can use this free of cost and never ending resource in an optimal way. Photovoltaic is a segment which allows to produce environmental friendly energy on a long range, and to achieve a sustainable input for the environmental protection. With a well-chosen product line on durable and high quality photovoltaic components, we conform the requirements of the actual amount on environmental friendly and also manageable technic in daily live. It is rarely possible to connect a photovoltaic module directly to a consumer. Based on this reason the kind and the highness of the voltage have to be adapt to the consumer. That means, it is necessary to define which components are available, which has the highest energy demand, also running times and the right dimension of batteries and battery inverter. The energy, which is emitted from the sun, is affected from seasonal and regional variabilitys. The power is also needed from the consumers, also when the pv-generator could not deliver the full amount of energy (could happen at night or at bad weather conditions). To solve this problem it is necessary to install energy storages like a battery systems. If a photovoltaic plant is supported from a secondary power source, for example a wind generator, the system is called hybrid plant.

STANDALONE SYSTEMS
In general systems, which are responsible for the energy production and are not connected to the public network, are called standalone plants. Standalone plants are install, if the energy supply based on the grid is not possible, not cost-effective or wanted. Suitable objects or buildings for the efficient application of standalone plants are: Holiday houses Mountain-restaurants Ski huts Agricultural objects Alpine meadow objects Possible examples of use are: Small village supply in the third world Irrigation systems Weather stations Traffic capacity Telecommunication Based on future analysis it is confirmed, that the energy demand is increasing. That means also the standalone plants are increasing because, fossil standard applications are finite. Technical developments, which can reduce the production cost and continuative the costs for the endcustomer, are boosting the tendency of standalone plants. In the mobile Area of small applications the number of standalone photovoltaic plants is also increasing. Applications on the mobile area are: Pocket calculator Torch light Radios Watches Parking meter Cars Standalone photovoltaic plants are runned as simple direct current plants where small applications are build up as 12, 24 or 48 V systems. If there is the demand on higher voltages (for example 230 V AC) from the plant, it is necessary to install an additional battery inverter, which converts the direct current to grid conform alternating current. The advantage of this solution is the possible application of standard equipment, the disadvantage is that there are energy loses, costs of the inverter and its maintenance occurs. Standalone plants are classified in following types: Direct connection Direct current systems with energy storage Hybrid usage Bidirectional systems

Direct Connenction
The basic structure of a standalone systems is a photovoltaic generator which delivery the produced energy directly to the consumer. Typical examples for a direct connection with the photovoltaic system are engines of pumps, small power motors or fans. Advantages of such a system are the operating safety and the easy installation. Such a system could be installed in areas where variabilitys of the energy output of the sun could be tolerated. To reach a high efficiency, it is necessary to have a good adjustment of the operating characteristic curve and on the behavior of the direct current load. It is also very important that the live time circle of the connected application could be reduced based on voltage variabilitys or voltages above the nominal voltage.

Direct current system with energy storage

As written earlier, the energyamount and energyconsumption to not conform in many applications at the daily life. In such cases a photovoltaic generator is installed, where a short time energy storage is integrated. Then it is possible that the consumer gets the energy which is need and in the case of energy over production the energy is saved into the storage. The most common technology are lead accumulators, short accu, which has advantages in better prices, good recycling qualties and a high volumetric capacity. The disadvantage is the finding prozess of optimal charging strategies, for customers and PV-system, also the maintenance and the costs, which are necessary for some accus. To calculate the right dimension it is important to know all consumers, their load and also the running time. The life cycle time of an accu is depend on the charge/discharge conditions. Based on this reason the system need a charger controller, which controlls the chrage o the accus. Most of the charge controller are connected with the consumers and protects the accus not only against deep charging also against too high energy consumption from the consumers. If in a system happens to often a deep discharging, it could happen that the accus are destroyed. A possible solution for this problem is a deep discharging protection. That means a typical standalone system consits of: PV-Generator (one oder more modules) Accumulator Charge controller Consumer Normally consumers are runned with alternating current, but ist is senseful to produce direct current as well as alternating current, because a high efficieny and also a good capacity utilization are the basic for the adoption of several direct current loads.

Hybrid usage
With an implementation of a photovoltaic generator, a normal generator und also a energy storage, it is possible to grant the energy supply also if the sun radiation is over a longer period (winter month) small or not enough. The energy storage is build up with accumulators, which is calculated as a short time storage. The generator which is runned with fossil fuel is controlled according to the energy demand and the charge of the accumulators. With this technology is a cost effective supplement of all consumers possible. A better plant efficiency, can be reached when a accumulators is supplied by another. Hybrid-plants do not have to be supplied by generators, which use fossil fuels. It is also possible to use wind energy plants or other renewable energy sources.

Diagram of a standalone hybrid system

Bidirectional Systems
A rapidly growing number of houses, farms and other buildings are being fitted with grid connected solar installations. The standard configuration has an important drawback: it is dependent on the grid. If the grid fails, the grid connected inverter shuts down and a total blackout is the result, despite the investment in a solar installation. Basically, the solution to this problem is to add an inverter/charger and batteries, but this only a standalone plant. To grant a feed in System in an existing public network it is necessary to install a SolarSwitch. If the grid fails, the power from the solar inverter will be redirected to the output of the MultiPlus. The MultiPlus replaces the grid and will balance the power mismatch between the load and the solar inverter. A power shortage will be supplemented by the MultiPlus, discharging the battery, and excess power will be used to recharge the battery.

INVERTER-PHOENIX INVERTER COMPACT

SCHRACK INFO Developed for professional duty, the Phoenix range of inverters is suitable for the widest range of applications. The design criteria have been to produce a true sine wave inverter with optimized efficiency but without compromise in performance. Employing hybrid HF technology, the result is a top quality product with compact dimensions, light in weight and capable of supplying power, problem-free, to any load.

GENERAL
Extra start up power A unique feature of the SinusMax technology is very high start-up power. Conventional high frequency technology does not offer such extreme performance. Phoenix inverters, however, are well suited to power up difficult loads such as refrigeration compressors, electric motors and similar appliances. Virtually unlimited power thanks to parallel and 3-phase operation capability Up to 6 units inverters can operate in parallel to achieve higher power output. Six 24/5000 units, for example, will provide 24kW / 30kVA output power. Operation in 3-phase configuration is also possible. To transfer the load to another AC source: the automatic transfer switch If an automatic transfer switch is required we recommend using the MultiPlus inverter/charger instead. The switch is included in these products and the charger function of the MultiPlus can be disabled. Computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption because the MultiPlus features a very short switchover time (less than 20 milliseconds). Computer Interface All models have a RS-485 port. All you need to connect to your PC is our MK2 interface (see under accessories). This interface takes care of galvanic isolation between the inverter and the computer, and converts from RS-485 to RS-232. A RS-232 to USB conversion cable is also available. Together with our VEConfigure software, which can be downloaded free of charge from our website www.schrack.at, all parameters of the inverters can be customized.

INVERTER MULTIPLUS
SCHRACK INFO The MultiPlus is a powerful true sine wave inverter, a sophisticated battery charger that features adaptive charge technology and a high-speed AC transfer switch in a single compact enclosure. Models range from 800VA to 5000VA per module.

GENERAL
Two AC Outputs The main output has no-break functionality. The MultiPlus takes over the supply to the connected loads in the event of a grid failure or when shore/generator power is disconnected. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption. The second output is live only when AC is available on one of the inputs of the MultiPlus. Loads that should not discharge the battery, like a water heater for example can be connected to this output (second output available on models with 50A transfer switch only). Virtually unlimited power thanks to parallel operation Up to 6 Multi's can operate in parallel to achieve higher power output. Six 24/5000/120 units, for example, will provide 25 kW / 30 kVA output power with 720 Amps charging capacity. Three phase capability In addition to parallel connection, three units of the same model can be configured for three-phase output. But thats not all: up to 6 sets of three units can be parallel connected for a huge 75 kW / 90 kVA inverter and more than 2000 Amps charging capacity. PowerControl Dealing with limited generator, shore side or grid power This feature takes the principle of PowerControl to a further dimension. It allows the MultiPlus to supplement the capacity of the alternative source. Where peak power is so often required only for a limited period, the MultiPlus will make sure that insufficient shore or generator power is immediately compensated for by power from the battery. When the load reduces, the spare power is used to recharge the battery. PowerAssist Bossting the capacity of shore or generator power This feature takes the principle of PowerControl to a further dimension. It allows the MultiPlus to supplement the capacity of the alternative source. Where peak power is so often required only for a limited period, the MultiPlus will make sure that insufficient shore

or generator power is immediately compensated for by power from the battery. When the load reduces, the spare power is used to recharge the battery. Four stage adaptive charger and dual bank battery charging The main output provides a powerful charge to the battery system by means of advanced adaptive charge software. The software fine-tunes the three stage automatic process to suit the condition of the battery, and adds a forth stage for long periods of float charging. The adaptive charge process is described in more detail on the Phoenix Charger datasheet and on our website, under Technical Information. In addition to this, the MultiPlus will charge a second battery using an independent trickle charge output intended for a main engine or generator starter battery (trickle charge output available on 12V and 24V models only). System configuring has never been easier After installation, the MultiPlus is ready to go. If settings have to be changed, this can be done in a matter of minutes with a new DIP switch setting procedure. Even parallel and 3phase operation can be programmed with DIP switches: no computer needed! Alternatively, VE.Net can be used instead of the DIP switches. And sophisticated software (VE.Bus Quick Configure and VE.Bus System Configurator) is available to configure several new, advanced, features.

Unique PowerAssist feature The MultiPlus will prevent overload of a limited AC source. First, battery charging will automatically be reduced when otherwise an overload would occur. The second level will boost the output of a generator or shore side supply with power taken from the battery. Uninterrupted AC power (UPS function) In the event of a grid failure or shore or generator power being disconnected, the inverter within the Multi is automatically activated and takes over the supply to the connected loads. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption.

INVERTER QUATTRO
SCHRACK INFO The Quattro can be connected to two independent AC sources, for example shore-side power and a generator, or two generators. The Quattro will automatically connect to the active source. The main output has no-break functionality. The Quattro takes over the supply to the connected loads in the event of a grid failure or when shore/generator power is disconnected. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption.

GENERAL
Two AC Outputs The second output is live only when AC is available on one of the inputs of the Quattro. Loads that should not discharge the battery, such as air-conditioning or a water heater can be connected to this output. Three phase cability Three units can be configured for three-phase output. But thats not all: up to 10 sets of three units can be parallel connected to provide 270kW / 300kVA inverter power and more than 4000A charging capacity. PowerControl Dealing with limited generator, shore-side or grid power The Quattro is a very powerful battery charger. It will therefore draw a lot of current from the generator or shore side supply (16A per 5kVA Quattro at 230VAC). A current limit can be set on each AC input. The Quattro will then take account of other AC loads and use whatever is spare for charging, thus preventing the generator or shore supply from being overloaded. PowerAssist Boosting shore or generator power This feature takes the principle of Power Control to a further dimension allowing the Quattro to supplement the capacity of the alternative source. Where peak power is so often required only for a limited period, the Quattro will make sure that insufficient shore or generator power is immediately compensated for by power from the battery. When the load reduces, the spare power is used to recharge the battery. Solar energy: AC power available even during a grid failure The Quattro can be used in off grid as well as grid connected PV and other alternative energy systems.

SOLAR SWITCH
A rapidly growing number of houses, farms and other buildings are being fitted with grid connected solar installations. The standard configuration has an important drawback: it is dependent on the grid. If the grid fails, the grid connected inverter shuts down and a total blackout is the result, despite the investment in a solar installation. The same is true for other grid connected alternative energy solutions, such as wind, water or micro CHP (micro Combined Heat & Power). Basically, the solution to this problem is to add an inverter/charger and batteries. With a Solarswitch it is possible to create a bidirectional PV-System.

When the public grid is available, the Victron SolarSwitch will connect the solar inverter directly to the grid. In order to prevent the batteries from discharging completely in case of insufficient solar power, some or all loads can be can be shut down with programmable relays available on the SolarSwitch

A.) The grid is present: All loads are supplied by power from the grid. B.) Grid failure: Solar energy is used to supply the protected loads and/or to recharge the batteries. C.) Batteries discharged: All loads are disconnected. Solar energy is used to recharge the battery.

PRECISION-BATTERY MONITOR
SCHRACK INFO The BMV-600S and BMV-602S are our newest high precision battery monitors. The essential function of a battery monitor is to calculate ampere-hours consumed and the state of charge of a battery. Ampere-hours consumed are calculated by integrating the current flowing in or out of the battery. Highest resolution: 10mA (0,01A) with 500A shunt. Lowest current consumption: 1mA. Easiest to wire: the BMV-600 comes with shunt, 10 meter RJ 12 UTP cable and 2 meter battery cable with fuse. No other components needed. Easiest to install: separate front bezel for square or round appearance; ring for rear mounting and screws for front mounting.

GENERAL
Precision monitoring The essential function of a battery monitor is to calculate ampere-hours consumed and the state of charge of a battery. Ampere-hours consumed is calculated by integrating the current flowing in or out of the battery. In case of a constant current, this integration is equivalent to current multiplied by time. A discharge current of 10A during 2 hours, for example, amounts to 20Ah consumed. All our battery monitors are based on a powerful microprocessor, programmed with the algorithms needed for precision monitoring. Standard Information and alarms Battery voltage (V). Battery charge/discharge current (A). Ampere-hours consumed (Ah). State of charge (%). Time to go at the current rate of discharge. Visual and audible alarm: over- and under voltage, and/or battery discharged. Programmable alarm or generator start relay. BMV 600S: low cost ultra-high resolution monitor Highest resolution: 10mA (0,01A) with 500A shunt. Can be used with 50, 60 or 100mV shunts, current rating from 100A to 1000A Lowest current consumption: 4mA @12V and 3mA @ 24V. Easiest to wire: the BMV 600S comes with shunt, 10 meter RJ 12 UTP cable and 2 meter battery cable with fuse; no other components needed. Easiest to install: separate front bezel for square or round appearance; ring for rear mounting and screws for front mounting. Broadest voltage range: 9.5 95 VDC without prescaler needed. Communication port (Isolated RS232 interface is needed to connect to a computer)

STANDALONE EQUIPMENT
Digital Multi Control The Digital Multi Control panel (DMC) is a remote panel designed to work with all Multis /Quattros and Multi/Quattro systems. This includes stand alone, parallel and 2-3 phase configurations. Both VE.Bus and non VE.Bus systems are supported. Connecting the DMC to your system is a simple procedure. In most cases just connecting the DMC with a RJ45 cable is sufficient and no extra set-up handling is required. The DMC is used to remotely set up to four (five including the generator functionality) different input currents, read out the status of your system and turn on and off the Multis or Quattros.

Interface MK2-USB Phoenix Inverters are ready to communicate with a computer through its RS-485 data port. All you need to link to your PC in order to be able to set and read out all parameters is the data link as shown. Moreover, all Victron Energy products equipped with an RS-485 data port, such as VE.Net, can easily be integrated in a computerized monitoring and control system.
