Engage

Students will work in pairs to complete Modeling Multiplication of Fractions Use paper to find 1/3 of or 1/3 Directions: 1. fold a sheet of paper into fourths and shade of it 2. Fold the same paper lengthwise into thirds as shown and shade 1/3 of it 3. a. count the total number of rectangles made by the folds (12) b. how many rectangles did you shade twice? (1) c. what fraction of all the rectangles did you shade twice (1/12) 4. use the model to complete 1/3 = Explain how you found the product 5 choose two fractions from 1/3 2/3 or 3/4 . use modeling to find the product fo the two fractions. 6. suggest a rules for multiplying fractions Students will synthesize rules for multiplying fractions through folding paper and shading appropriate rectangles (materials needed: white print paper two different color market, pencil, or crayon for each pair) Ask them to suggest a rule for multiplying fractions.

Extend (Independent Practice)

Now we will have a race to see who can multiply fractions and mixed numbers correctly in the fastest time. You have 10 problems when I say go you will flip your paper over and attempt to answer those ten questions. Once finished flip your paper back over and read until I can come check your work. When you are reading I will know you are finished. Those that finish in 10 minutes and are 100% correct will receive a ticket for the raffle. (worksheet in guided notes) 5 minutes is left to review questions the entire class had difficulty with. Students can explain how they got their answer or the teacher can explain how to get the right answer.
