10 YEARS

First and foremost, we would like to thank our advertisers and readers for making this amazing milestone possible. We also want to thank those behind the scenes, including Crescendo Advertising (Melissa Ligon and Liane Baly) for their considerable talent in creating ads and laying out the publication for nine years. A big thank you to Readable Ink (Victoria Reed) for doing the tedious work of proofing the pages of The Columbia Notebook. We thank and welcome Maria Fabrizio, our new graphic designer who brings innovative and creative ideas to the table. Wed also like to thank Professional Printers (Mike Kohn) for their excellent job in printing and having the books out on time, every time! Last, but not least, we would like to thank the Academy?! As we look back over the last ten years, we can see that weve been part of a life cycle. When we first began to envision The Columbia Notebook in 2003, we put our efforts into improving how people thought about Columbia. Yes, it is a beautiful state capital, but we also wanted to let everyone know that Columbia is a city with a lot of opportunities for our needs to be met locally. We wanted to showcase Columbia as a place that has wonderful businesses that take care of their clients and are really proud of what they do. And so The Columbia Notebook was born with a lot of love, caring and concern about what our clients and readers would want. We were thrilled to see how well The Columbia Notebook was received from its inception. A lot has happened in the past 10 years in our City a new mayor, the rebirth of downtown, new businesses and growth within USC, to name a few. Less happily, we have lost some of Columbias gems. On a personal note, in these ten years, we, too, have experienced lifes ups and downs birth, death, divorce, marriage, illness and miracles. But, as involved community members, we are keeping our focus on helping our fellow Columbians by shopping and supporting local businesses and service providers. We know Columbia will continue to thrive if we help each other out! It took a lot of hard work for many people on all levels to make The Columbia Notebook successful. We are grateful for everyone who has participated. Thank you to all who have shown their support in so many ways, helping us give Columbia a free resource guide by women for women that highlights local businesses. Heres to another 10 years!

Tips for Wavy or Layered Hair

WAVY This hairstyle features soft, bouncy waves all over. Create this hairstyle by first applying a curl-enhancing cream or gel and a heat protectant to damp hair. Blow dry the hair using a diffuser attachment and just your fingers to shape and position the hair. Once the hair is completely dry, you can add all-over waves using a medium-barrel curling iron. Roll up small sections of hair in the curling iron and hold in a vertical position for about 2030 seconds, or until the hair in the curling iron feels hot to the touch. LAYERS Layers are a great addition to any haircut. They help to add movement to a style, reduce bulkiness and can sometimes make styling easier. If you have extra-frizzy or thick hair, you will want to go with very long layers as short layers do not work well with frizzy hair. A very popular trend today is to get a short to medium length haircut with very long layers added throughout. The short shag hairstyle, similar to Meg Ryans in When Harry met Sally,is making a comeback this year. It has that heavy layered-looks like you grabbed the scissors and started cutting your hair every which way look that can be worn in a short or medium length.

Travel Wise Lets Get Packing!

by Cathy Kline, The Columbia Notebook

FASHION

The countdown is over; that fabulous vacation youve been dreaming about starts tomorrow and all you have left to do is pack! Whether packing for a cruise ship or the limitations of an airline luggage policy, make sure every item in your case counts. Lets start with the basics. You can check the weather, but it doesnt come with guarantees. A general idea of the temperature should be helpful, though. Is there a beach in your near future? Pack two (or more) swimsuits, a beach cover-up or oversized T-shirt (also does double-duty as a nightshirt), easily rinsed-off sandals and think about buying your sun protection when youve reached your destination. Casual khakis can go from daytime through evening with the right change of top, and a lightweight jacket can help counter any evening chill or ocean breeze. Cruise ship? Dont forget some (comfortable) heels to go with your evening wear, since now is the perfect time to pack that little black dress you simply knew youd need. A second cocktail dress can help balance out every other dinner or event. Remember that rolling them before placing them in your suitcase often reduces any need to have wrinkles in them steamed or pressed out, plus rolling clothes saves space. Flying to an exotic location? Check the current TSA guidelines for toiletry containers and contents, and be sure to add some extra plastic bags to protect your clothing from any pressure-induced spills. When selecting your delicates for any vacation, opt for the quick-drying handwashable pieces for under your clothing. There are plenty of nooks and crannies in a cosmetic bag, suitcase pocket or even your beach bag that can hold spare undies when you want to save the bulk of the empty room in your carrier for your main wardrobe. Consider any special excursions you may have booked, and keep those in mind before youve maxed out the space in the suitcase. A trek into the rainforest begs for lightweight long sleeves and pantlegs with sturdy hiking boots, while a dance floor demands the sheerest nylons and a skirt that emphasizes your grace. And just before you pull that zipper closed, make sure youve packed your spirit of adventure. Its the first item worth donning when you reach your destination!

Keys to an Organized Divorce

Helping Your Lawyer Help You
by Stephen R. Fitzer, Esquire, Attorney at Law If you are convinced that separation, or even a divorce, may be the only solution to your marital woes, it makes sense to speak with an attorney before you declare your intentions to your spouse. Being organized is critical in such matters, so be sure to gather the following information to share with your attorney at the very beginning of your consultation: detailed records of your assets and debts; income and expenditures; and the needs of your minor children. Be prepared to provide the tax returns from the marriage, the latest pension and retirement account statements, bank account, credit card, mortgage and car loan balances, and life insurance policy and beneficiary information. Decisions will need to be made about whether your case should include alimony,

who will be the custodial parent of the children, what the proposed visitation schedule should be for the other parent and whether any restraining orders are needed. By the way, does your spouse have access to your email or social networking accounts? When and where were you married; when and where did you last live together; and where does your spouse live and work now? If there are skeletons in the closet, are they locked away or open for view? Look for an attorney who has time for you and is a good listener, but be ready to accept his instruction and advice about whats important and whats not. A good lawyer is always thinking ahead to a final divorce or the separation hearing, when it will be important that you impress a judge with your ability to answer pointed questions consistently and clearly.
This article is intended to provide general information and does not constitute legal advice. This law firm makes no guarantee as to the outcome of any case. Each case is reviewed and evaluated on its own merits. Please note that this information does not create an attorney-client relationship. Always insist on a written, express agreement of representation signed by you and your attorney.

How to Ease Your Money Stress

The past four years have seen an increase in the number of Americans who suffer from stress over their financial situation. Easing stress about money can make a significant difference in your general happiness. Make decisions from a healthy financial viewpoint by applying the following: 1. Identify your problems In order to solve financial issues, first you must realistically assess your situation. Examine bank statements, credit card bills, any debts and open accounts, and assess your exact standing. 2. Determine which habits are causing problems Money can be tied to emotions. What drives your spending habits: a need to indicate status, to show others how much you care or attitudes formed in childhood? Identify your emotional connection to money and better understand your shopping behaviors. 3. Communicate with your partner Openly discuss finances with your spouse. If there are problems, solve them together instead of hiding important details from each other. 4. Be strict in budgeting Once you understand your situation and your approach to your finances, it becomes clear where and how you can cut back. A fairly rigorous budget may be difficult to adapt to, but provides security and peace of mind. 5. Save, save, save When unexpected expenses occur (car repairs, medical bills, etc.), be prepared with an emergency fund that provides extra security. 6. Live within your means Commit to spending only what you can afford. This may mean downsizing your living situation or indulging in fewer expensive items.

Lawns
The fall is a great time to focus our attention on our lawns. Fescue and bluegrass are cool-season grasses that prefer the cooler weather. When planted in the fall, these grasses have a chance to become established before the stress of the hot summer.

Paths
To build a path, first make out where you want your path using a hose, masons twine and stakes or spray paint. Artfully curving lines can emphasize a special vignette and make small gardens seem larger. Measure the distance from beginning to end to get the number of linear feet, then multiply that number by the desired width in feet. The result is the square footage pathway.

WE WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Sometime in our lifetime, we will all be touched by cancer, be it ourselves, a family member or a friend. Peggy and I made this bracelet for our family members. Each bead color stands for a word that helps cope with this terrible disease: RED: for energy, love and strength YELLOW: for hope BLUE: for peace and calm PURPLE: for spirituality GREEN: good luck When we wore them, people inquired about them and asked if they could purchase one. We thought about it and thought why not? there is strength in numbers and we would like to donate a portion of the sales to cancer research. If you are interested in owning one of these bracelets, please email jakeannie@aol.com or call Cathy at 803-252-6162.

Shape versus Size: Which Matters?

by Ram Kalus, MD, Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas Actually, when considering breast enhancement, both are important. But most women report that they are more concerned with shape than with size. In our practice, a natural look is what women seek; unfortunately too many women who undergo breast enhancement surgery look as though they have had surgery, with either a high round artificial appearance or a disproportionately large breast size, neither of which is desirable if the goal is to be discreet. Ideally, only the patient (and whomever she chooses to tell) and her surgeon should know that she had surgery. This is as true for breast enhancement as it is for any other plastic surgery, be it on the face, breast or body. Specifically, regarding breast augmentation, achieving a natural slope to the upper pole of the breast rather than an exaggerated round appearance depends on at least three things: the implant shape; the implant size; and the proper placement or positioning of the implant within the breast. Placing the implant underneath the pectoralis muscle is most commonly recommended and this maneuver alone can increase the upper pole fullness which many women desire. But too large an implant or an implant resting too high on the chest can result in an artificial appearance. Today there are more breast implant options than ever before for women considering breast enhancement surgery. In 2006, the FDA concluded that silicone-gel-filled breast implants were entirely safe even for cosmetic breast augmentation, giving women the choice of saline-filled versus silicone-gel-filled implants. With proper and careful selection, both types of implants can result in a very pretty and natural appearance. Most patients and surgeons alike agree that the silicone-gel-filled implant feels a bit more natural than the saline-filled implant, which has a bit more of a water bag feel. Just this year, the FDA approved the release by the three main breast implant manufacturers of anatomically shaped Gummy Bear or form stable implants that can be used to give a more natural and less artificially round appearance to the breast (see accompanying photo).

From left to right: round silicone-gel-filled, round saline-filled, and anatomically shaped Gummy Bear silicone breast implants If the skin envelope is very loose or if the nipple/areola is positioned low on the breast, which might be the case after one or more pregnancies, a breast lift or mastopexy may be necessary, either alone or in conjunction with a breast augmentation. An augmentation by itself can never be a substitute for a true breast lift if the breast has too much sag or droop. Although most women can expect a beautiful result with a round silicone-gel-filled implant, the newer anatomically shaped implants may provide a more natural-appearing enhancement. The optimal implant shape and size for any given patient and whether or not a breast lift might also be required needs to be determined on an individual basis after careful evaluation and discussion with the patient about her own expectations. Such a consultation should always occur with a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience with breast surgery. Are You Half of a Hot Couple?

by Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, Certified Sotto Pelle Physician, Midlands Medical Wellness Center No matter how discreet women try to be, sometimes a hot flash will strike with little warning and be evident to an intimate companion. A little understanding is appreciated at times like these, but sometimes sympathy or consideration goes a little farther. It can set us back immensely to have a male friend admit, Oh, I get those too! as if one-upping us at our own hormonal stage. But the fact is: its quite possible he knows exactly how youre feeling because he may suffer from them as well. A recent study by Harvard confirms that some men suffer from the same symptoms as women: a sudden feeling of warmth or flushing that is most intense over the head and trunk, often accompanied by visible redness of the skin and by sweating, which can be profuse. Hot flashes are most common at night. They are usually brief, averaging four minutes, but often leave cold sweat behind. Flashes may be infrequent and mild or quite troublesome, sometimes occurring six to 10 times a day. Some people, both male and female, report anxiety, palpitations or irritability. Hormonal balance can be the solution to both men and womens hot flashes. So if your male friend is relating a little too well to your discomfort, suggest that he join you in a frank conversation with a board-certified physician who can suggest a solution such as bio-identical hormone replacement treatment (BHRT). Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, owner of Midlands Medical Wellness Center, is a Sotto Pelle-certified physician, trained in the evaluation and management of BHRT. All procedures at Midlands Medical Wellness Center are performed by a physician. We care about our patients and do not require any annual contract or monthly fees. PET HEALTH TIPS

As responsible pet owners, it is important that we pay special attention to our furry companions well-being during the winter. Antifreeze is highly poisonous. Although it smells and tastes good to your pet, it can be lethal. Rinse and dry your dogs paws after a walk where rock salt has been used to melt ice on sidewalks. Provide plenty of fresh water. Pets can easily get dehydrated in the winter, just as during the summer. To prevent frostbite on your pets ears, tail and feet, dont leave them outside for too long when temperatures dip below 40 degrees. Be very careful of supplemental heat sources. Fireplaces and portable heaters can severely burn your pet. Make sure all fireplaces have screens and keep portable heaters out of reach. Pets, like people, seem to be more susceptible to illness in the winter. Take your pet to a veterinarian if you notice any suspicious symptoms. Dont use over-the-counter medications on your pets without consulting a veterinarian.

A Drive to Help Fight Hunger

by Melissa Keeling, Customer Relations Manager, Jim Hudson Lexus At the beginning of the summer, the Jim Hudson Automotive group kicked off the Jim Hudson 2000 campaign: for each car sold, a percentage was donated to Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia and Golden Harvest Food Bank in Augusta, Georgia. On July 22, 2013, Mr. Hudson presented the organizations with a total of $100,000 in donations to aid in fighting hunger during their most critical summer months. Matching grants from Lexus also contributed to this fund. The matching grants are a result of the Lexus Pursuit of Potential, a philanthropic program dedicated to supporting organizations that help children realize their potential and to inspire them to make the world a better place. Harvest Hope is a good fit for this mission because the agency served more than 2,600 children last year alone. Our Lexus family is proud to have participated, along with our other stores, in making the program a success again this year. In addition to our monetary gift, our employees each donated money of their own and we were able to fill the Harvest Hope food bins with canned goods. Thanks to our employees, our management staff and, most importantly, our Lexus customers, we had our best Jim Hudson 2000 yet!

At Jim Hudson Lexus of Columbia, its our mission to provide Columbia, S.C. and surrounding areas with prestigious, luxury cars from Lexus. From unparalleled customer service to world-class quality, we implement our high standards every day to meet your high expectations as customers by selling the finest new and used Lexus cars built. Professional Area Rug Cleaning Services

by Chris Gillan, Sincerely Yours You have an expensive oriental rug and your pet just peed on it. Whether an accident or an act of revenge (hes mad at you for not letting him sit on the couch), pet urine stinks and you want the smell removed. If youve had the area rug for quite some time, it likely needed cleaning and restoration anyway. Your little pal just got your motivation up and running. You may want to tackle the job yourself by renting a steam cleaner to save money. But certain area rugs need different types of care. You dont want to needlessly damage your oriental rug. Its best in the long run to hire professional cleaners with years of experience and the right cleaning equipment. Not only is a stained rug unsightly and possibly smelly, dirt and grime will damage your area rug over time. Grains of sand and particles will wear down into the rug fibers and can cause rips, tears and holes. Sincerely Yours professionally cleans area rugs at our custom rug-cleaning facility. Performed by certified professionals through a multi-step process that returns our clients rugs to like-new conditions, our specialized rug-cleaning services take the worry out of returning your oriental rug to its best possible condition. With the use of industrial cleaning products and equipment, rug stains and odors are removed. Grey turns to white. Colors pop. And pet odor is no more. Visit our website at www.callsyi.com for more detailed information on our rug-cleaning process.

RUG CARE TIPS
