Writing a Personal Mission Statement

Why should I?
A mission statement is part of a bigger picture. Corporate
consultants call this bigger picture strategic planning.

Strategic planning is the process by which the guiding members of

an organization envision its future and develop the necessary
procedures and operations to achieve that future.

Thus, strategic planning is a roadmap to lead a person or

organization to become what he/she/it wants to become.

The steps to the strategic planning process usually include:

1. Assess strengths & weaknesses (internal) and opportunities &

threats (external).

2. Develop vision (ideal view of realistic future).

3. Develop mission statement (how to get to vision).

4. State core values/beliefs/priorities.

5. Set long-term objectives/goals and then short-term.

6. Determine who, what, when, where, how of objectives/goals.

7. Create assessment strategies to evaluate success of

objectives/goals.

8. Start again (repeat every 3-5 years).

What is a mission statement?

• A precise, concise and inspiring declaration of the fundamental
purpose of the organization/individual

• A powerful document that expresses your personal sense of

purpose and meaning in life; it acts as a governing constitution
by which you evaluate decisions and choose behaviors

• Written permission to do what is most important to you, most

exciting to you, most YOU

• A good mission statement is:

 no more than one sentence long
 easily understood by a 12-year-old
 able to be recited by memory at gunpoint
(Laurie Beth Jones)

THE PROCESS IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE

PRODUCT!

My Symphony
To live content with small means
To seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion;
To be worth, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich;
To study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly;
To listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart;
To bear all cheerfully, to do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never;
In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the
uncommon.
This is to be my symphony.
~William Ellery Channing

Benjamin Franklin's Thirteen Virtues

Temperance: Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling
conversation.
Order: Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its
time.
Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you
resolve.
Frugality: Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; that is, waste
nothing.
Industry: Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all
unnecessary actions.
Sincerity: Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly speak accordingly.
Justice: Wrong none by doing injuries; or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
Moderation: Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they
deserve.
Cleanliness: Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habituation.
Tranquility: Be not disturbed at trifles or at accidents common or unavoidable.
Chastity: Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness,
or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.
Humility: Imitate Jesus or Socrates

To live my life as an expression of the principles I believe in:

People shine when given the chance to create, express and grow. Empower.
People feel the need to be understood, just as, or even more strongly then the need
to be loved. Listen.
People don't need more opinions, we already drown in data. People need clarity. Drill
down.
People learn from example, not only from words. Exemplify.
People are attracted to honesty and have bullshit detectors. Be true.
People need new experiences to expand their knowledge of reality. Adventure.
People can learn from their mistakes. Recognize, don't fear failure.
People search for simple solutions to problems when they are rarely simple. Dig.
People shine when they believe they can make a lasting impact, this may be the core
of everything we do. Inspire.
People and companies are driven by visions, not ideologies. Lead.
Ignorance is fear of the truth. Truth is more important than pride. Learn.
A life without passion is a life not lived. Live.
Faith is the cure to doubt. Have Faith.
When you forgive, you are forgiven. Forgive.
Love is stronger than death. Love.
~Karl Martino

Be humble, considerate, honest, kind, loving, and most importantly forgiving, but
wise.
Give unselfishly to the needy, but try to provide tools for success as well: i.e., offer a
job and a handout.
Provide limitless love to my children and my other family members. Allow them to
grow and develop unhindered of what I think is best; but allow them to painfully
discover what is best for themselves. Set wide boundaries within which they may
develop, wide enough where they can make decisions they will anguish over, but
close enough that they will know how much I love them and that I will always morally
support them. Say yes, unless there is a very good and explainable answer for no.
Allow them to color in their own future, not striving for any perceived expectations of
my own or other people in their lives.
Keep my word.
Find weaknesses in myself and situations and choose to improve them.
Other important values I must never forget: Learning, gaining knowledge and
nurturing friendships.
Work and play where my integrity cannot be compromised.
Refrain from building walls o allow pessimism, criticism to come in, but I will choose
to learn from them, not react or hide from them
Refrain from competing, but add to others’ success.
Remember and thank those who have helped me. Return their kindness to others
that need it.
Allow my values to guide me, not jealously or other peoples’ values, competition or
wealth.
Look at both sides of an issue before making a decision. Realize that each decision is
an independent decision, not necessarily directly related to past or future decisions,
and take the time to gather insight to make informed decisions.
Take time every day for reflection, to realize what I learned, what I should learn more
about to say thank you, to give myself a pat on the back while looking into what I
need to improve upon.
Remember always that my greatest success will be through my children’s eyes and
to build and positively develop that relationship every day.
"Real success is success with self; It's not having things, but in having mastery,
having victory over oneself."
