Laws Force Children to
Support Parents
Thirty states have laws that
require adult children to take care
of their parents. While the specifics
vary by state, the chilling fact is
that the courts can go after adult
children to force them to take
financial responsibility for their
senior parents. The target in most
cases seems to be the cost of food,
shelter, clothing and anything else
deemed necessary -- including
paying long-term care and nursing-
home bills.
The list of those that can sue
adult children is long: state public
agencies such as welfare, the
county, the town, creditors, doctors
and even the seniors themselves.
While on the surface it appears
that these kinds of lawsuits are
rare, every day now more and more
people are opening their mail to
discover they're being sued for the
cost of a parent's support.
Here's a sample of some state
laws:
--In some states it doesn't matter if
the parent was abusive or vanished
for a good part of the child's life, or
that the child and parent haven't
had contact in 20 or 30 years.
--A child who refuses to support
a parent can be arrested for on a
criminal charge and can go to jail
for a year.
--One law has a "family tree"
listing relatives in order who can
be required to provide support, and
it includes grandchildren.
--One state in particular seems
to go after adult children with a
vengeance. Fifty nursing homes
have sued, threatening to file liens
on homes.
This is a wakeup call to get our
affairs in order. If we're going to
pass assets to our children or make
provisions, perhaps we'd better do
it sooner than later. If you want to
consult your attorney to learn the
laws in your state and how they
apply to you, the operative phrase
is "filial responsibility."

Furniture Company of Manchester,
N.H. I recently read a collectible
column that states "a secretary
bookcase made in the 1940s is now
worth $15,000 to $20,000." Can
this be right and will this value
hold up during our current

Bottom Line, a consumer
newsletter. It references
reproduction furniture
manufactured by the Kittinger
Company, which acquired the
exclusive rights to craft copies of
authentic antiques owned by the
Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
I contacted several furniture
experts, who claim the People's
Furniture Company of Manchester
was a smaller company that had a
limited output but was fairly well-
known throughout New England
for its superb craftsmanship.

EMERALD ASH BORER (EAB)
INFORMATIONAL MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Cornell University Cooperative Extension in cooperation
with the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) will hold an informational public meeting
regarding the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) on Tuesday, July 14,
at 7pm in Randolph, Cattaraugus County- site of the first
detection of the EAB in the state.
The meeting will take place at the Randolph Fire Hall,
located at 70 Main Street in Randolph, Cattaraugus County.
Please note that the fire hall is located behind the Randolph
Municipal Building at 72 Main Street.
The EAB is a small but destructive beetle that infests and
kills North American ash tree species, including green, white,
black and blue ash. A multi-agency effort is underway to
address the EAB infestation and includes partners from the
State Department of Agriculture and Markets; U.S.
Department of Agriculture Animal Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS); the United States Forest Service; the state
Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; the
State Emergency Management Office; state Department of
Transportation; Cornell Cooperative Extension; and the
Seneca Nation.
At the upcoming meeting, DEC and Cooperative Extension
forestry experts will be present to share information and
answer questions on the EAB. The meeting will offer area
residents an opportunity to learn more about the EAB, what
actions individuals and communities can take to help reduce
the spread and minimize economic impacts of the EAB, and
the ongoing efforts in place to address the current EAB
infestation. Anyone interested is welcome and encouraged to
attend the meeting.
