learning are the essential requirements and libraries and institutions of
higher learning have to address these changing needs

WHAT IS A GOOD LIBRARY?
Examine how students, researchers, faculty and users view “Goodness”
in the library context.

“How much Good is this Library?” and

“How much Good does this Library do?

The two questions leading for effectiveness/efficiency/impact

The performance of a library could be broadly assessed with reference
to the following five areas:
Integration: Level of integration between mission, aims and
objectives of the institution and those of library
User satisfaction: Overall user satisfaction, document delivery,
information services, study facilities, information skills program
Delivery of objectives and output: Service standards, development
targets, library hours, document delivery, reference services,
information skills instruction, collection.
 Efficiency: Outputs related to resource input
Economy: Cost per unit

QUALITY MANAGEMENT
The quality management addresses “fitness for
purpose” or “conformance to requirements”. Total Quality
Management (TQM) stresses a customer focus and continuous
improvement as core values. Following inter twined facets of TQM
have to be developed simultaneously.

Develop clear purpose for the organization.

Provide vision, commitment and leadership.

Encourage teamwork and staff involvement.

Ensure design, products and services are customer-oriented.

Have clear, systematic, unambiguous and universally applied


processes.

Invest in continuous training and development of the staff.

Monitor performance continuously and act on the results.

NAAC AND ACCREDITATION
Vision “To make quality the defining element of higher education in India
through a contribution of self and external quality evaluation, promotion
and sustenance initiatives”.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION OF LIBRARY

Core activity which helps the user community in identifying and


accessing knowledge resources in an academic institution.
It also comprises activities performed in relation to the development of
the vision, the mission, the goals and policies of the library, working
hours, stock verification methods, copyright issues, membership,
budgeting and reporting, resource mobilization, technical processing
methods, manpower deployment, basic amenities and facilities as well as
activities such as collection development management or information
resource development, technical services, information services
generation, and technological, legal and copyright issues etc., of the
present and future operations.

Identification and internationalization of best practices in the


management and administrative functions at regular intervals would
enhance the collection development process, services, dissemination
and use of the library as a whole

Participation in meetings of Advisory Committees, involvement of the


Librarian in academic activities of the college/university, support from
management, participation of users, standard facilities with innovative
library buildings, resource generation, staff deployment and training,
information dissemination, capacity building in terms of ICT are a few
best practices adopted, would lead for continuous improvement and
overall performance of the Library

QUALITY INDICATORS IN LIS

The parameters have been defined by considering certain factors such


as
age of the institutions
courses offered

Following set of indicators have been developed with a set of minimum


parameters.

 Management of Library and Information Services.

Collection and services provided to users.

Extent of use of services.

Best practices

CONSLUSION

To ensure quality and excellence steady growth and


progress in tune with technological developments and advancements in
learning process, the libraries have to organize on modern lines.

In accreditation and reaccreditations process the NAAC assesses the


libraries on these indicators and parameters.

Well developed libraries with best practices would definitely result in


excellent accreditation
