Unit 9: 4.

1 Half a crossword
Participants write definitions using relative pronouns and play a crossword activity to recycle vocabulary.

Procedure
Divide the class into pairs. Half the class look at crossword A and the other half crossword B. Highlight the useful language for them to use. They make notes of their definitions. They must not use the words written in the crossword. Divide the class into groups of four (crosswords A and B together). Students from group A ask for a clue missing from their crossword, e.g. Whats 2 across? Group B reads the definition. Group A guesses. Demonstrate an example with the class. Students take turns to define a word from their crossword, so their partners can add the word to their versions of the puzzle. Make sure that students understand that they should not look at each others crosswords.

Useful language
This is something that This is someone who This is a time This is a place.

Example: This is something that you use to write. = pen
