Headmasters Corner
Thank you very much to Ms Case and well done to the whole school for making National Poetry Day such an enjoyable event. Particular praise goes to Georgina Loring for her recitation of the Owl and the Pussy Cat. On Thursday evening we thoroughly enjoyed entertaining Year 8 for their first Prefects Meeting. A delicious evening meal was followed by the class getting down to the serious side of planning their end of year Prom. You will have noticed that some slight alterations have been made to the lawn in front of the Lower School. This is in preparation for work that should be undertaken soon in turning it into an outdoor learning environment for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. I thank the FOTM for their very generous assistance with this project. I know that many of you are looking forward to next weeks Quiz Night. Please book your tickets by Monday if you havent done so already. The FOTM are also delighted to announce that we will be holding a Burns Night on Saturday 25th January 2014. Please place this date in your diaries and more details will follow shortly. Well done to the children of the 40 Club. These children scored the highest marks in last weeks Quarterly Grades; keep it up! Good luck to all of our athletes who are running in the Gloucestershire League Cross Country tomorrow.

40 Club Girls Hockey

Would parents please note that the U8 and U9 hockey matches next week will be played at the 3G pitch at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury BS32 4AG. Directions will be posted on the sports notice board. Alex Boulton, Ben Orchard, George Symonds, Abigail Blackwell, Henry Allan-Jones, Rachel Shutt and Georgina Loring all achieved their Personal Bests. Well done to Jake Wakeling, Freddie Cooper and Otis Walker (all Year 4) who beat all but seven of the children in Years 5 and 6. Years 3 & 4 - A day that it proved to be difficult to achieve a Personal Best. Ben Jacobi (3 mins 145 secs) and Iona Campbell (3 mins 16 secs) both achieved the coveted list times, showing excellent determination and speed. Congratulations! There were some good performances from William Bate, Archie West, Jeanne Veron, Lou Saelens and Ryan Hann who all achieved their Personal Bests.

Tockington Titbits
Helena Brain LOVES poetry. Poppy Carter brought in a huge file of poems to school. James Allen is still smiling and knows a pretty good limerick. Lou Saelens reads poetry in French AND English. Georgina Loring can recite the whole of The Owl and the Pussycat off by heart. Year 2 learned a limerick and performed it to an audience in less than 24 hours! Superstar - Lucy England Ambassadors - George Symonds and Freddie Cooper Boarders of the Week - Eugenia Paz Nunez and Adrian Ng Year 3 enjoyed a blind food tasting test in their RS lesson. Well done to Archie West for trying fruit! James Allen recited a poem superbly in assembly.

Love Reading 4 Kids

Many of our children are reviewing books for the LoveReading4Kids website at the moment (if you havent already looked at it, its well worth a visit) and the deadline is fast approaching, along with Michael Morpurgos 70th birthday. If your child has chosen to review a book, could you please urge them to complete it even if they havent finished the book- so that we can send the reviews off for Michael Morpurgos birthday surprise? Please send the reviews to jcase@tockingtonmanorschool.com.

Dont Forget! Clothes for a Cause

As mentioned last week, the FOTM are having another Clothes for a Cause collection the week beginning Monday 14th October. Any good quality clothes, shoes, belts and handbags can be left in any type of plastic bag in the lobby (where the signing in desk used to be) up to the morning of 17th October when they will be collected. Soft toys and books can be put in separate bags if you want to re-home any of those as well but we get paid different amounts so they must be bagged up separately. We made over 100 last collection it would be nice to make over 200 this time, with money going towards two projects revamping the Adventure Playground and getting a free flow area for the Lower School up and running. Please have a good clear out! Bags and leaflets will be available the week before the collection.

Sports News
Congratulations to Jacob Wakeling (Year 4) who has been selected to join the initial Glamorganshire County Cricket Squad for their winter training. What a fabulous achievement! Well done to Mum Mrs Wakeling who recently ran the Bristol Half Marathon on top of being chosen to represent Wales at hockey. Congratulations also to Krystof Soukup-Carne (Year 2) who was player of the week in the U7 North Bristol Rugby Club match against Kingswood. Well done, Krystof!

Craft Club
To keep costs down, I am looking for any remnants of fabrics or remains of craft kits that you might be considering throwing out at home. Anything which might help to stock a now much depleted craft box would be gratefully received. Please send things in with your children, or email me if you are in any doubt about whether what you had in mind might be useful. Many thanks.

Year 5 Art
Mrs Martin is delighted by how much Year 5 have improved their drawing skills recently. You only need to take a look at this wonderful drawing to see why. Each pupil was given several random pieces of a zebra photograph to copy using shading techniques. We then pieced the picture together to see the zebra take shape. Well done Year 5!!

Milkshake Monday Morning (Mmm)

This week saw the first of our Milkshake Monday Mornings when Year 1 visited the library with their class teachers, drank a delicious banana milkshake provided by the kitchen ladies (an Irene special, I believe), and ate apple slices. On top of that they listened to a story from Mrs Gooch whilst having their snacks and then they selected books to share with the Library Ladies and teachers. They seemed to enjoy the experience and are looking forward to their next Milkshake Monday later in the year. A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the event a success. In two weeks, Year 2 take their turn!

Look@My Work Assembly

This Tuesday we had our first Look@MyWork assembly of the year with a great talk from Dr Rowe who spoke about her job as a consultant in A&E in Bristol. She was inspiring and described her work as very fulfilling. She showed the children images and got them talking about all of their own ailments. She even passed around a plaster cast and a sling for the children to try on. It was a very interactive talk which generated a myriad of questions at the end. The childrens questions were varied with most of them being related to accidents and gore but the Headmasters favourite was from Toby Gaulton in Year 3 who asked, what is the best bit of your job?. This sums up the extremely positive attitude that so many of our children possess. Well done! We are grateful for the time which Dr Rowe gave to us in assembly and thank her very much.

Cheltenham & Bath Literature Festivals

Both of these festivals are running at present and tickets are still available for some of the family events. Take a look at their websites if you fancy a bookish day out at the weekend. Mrs Gooch and I are taking a group of 11 Creative Writers with us to Cheltenham on Sunday to see Martin Jarvis, Emma Thompson, Dean Atta, Paul Stewart, Chris Riddell and Jonathan Stroud. We are very excited and will report back next week.

Poster Competition
Design a poster for Bonfire Night. Open to all. Entries should be on A4 paper and coloured using pencils, water-colours, pastels or pen. Please don't include any writing. Paper available from Mrs Martin. Closing date - 11th October.

Quiz Night
This is your last chance to buy tickets for the Quiz Night on Saturday 12th October. The cut off date is Wednesday 9th.

National Poetry Day

All around the school on Thursday we were celebrating National Poetry Day. Thank you to everyone who sent in poems or brought in poetry books one person brought in NINE poetry books such is her passion for poetry and another had a file full of poems. The enthusiasm was great around school and I had lots of chats with children of all Year Groups, all keen to tell me something about their poems. We had poems in tutor time, poems in assembly some recited by children, including the whole of Year 2, who recited a limerick; James Allen and Georgina Loring also bravely volunteered to stand up in front of the whole school and recite poetry. Lou Saelens brought in poems learned by heart in French school beautifully presented and illustrated in her own little book. We had poems in the library and Michael Morpurgo, Juliet Stevenson and Ted Hughes reading some to us. The Poetry Trail, which Mrs Gooch had worked so hard on, had to be postponed until Friday as it was rained off but it looks like it will be a lot of fun for all and the anticipation can only make it even better! English lessons were full of making poems and all teachers shared their own favourites with the children. It was a great day and I hope that your children told you all about it! Judith Case
