J. S. Bach (transcribed by the composer)

INTRODUCTION A little faith goes a long way is our Lords point in the gospel. A mustard seeds-worth has miraculous potential. The patience, tenacity, and endurance required for the life of faith are the blessings received in water and the word (holy baptism), bread and wine (holy communion), the word read and proclaimed in this assembly. Anticipate them. Receive them with thanksgiving. CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and childrens bulletins are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW Abundant God, we give you thanks for the fruitful earth, which produces what is needed for life. Bless those who work in the fields; grant favorable weather to all engaged in agriculture; and help us to ensure that all people share the fruits of the earth, rejoicing in your goodness; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Benevolent, merciful God: When we are empty, fill us. When we are weak in faith, strengthen us. When we are cold in love, warm us, that with fervor we may love our neighbors and serve them for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN FIRST READING: Lamentations 1:16 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5 Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions;

her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Lamentations 3:1926 The cantor will lead, the congregations follows Refrain:

The thought of my affliction | and my homelessness is worm- | wood and gall! 20 My soul continually | thinks of it and is bowed | down within me. R
21

But this I | call to mind, and therefore | I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the LORD | never ceases, God's mercies never come | to an end; R
23

they are new | every morning; great | is your faithfulness. 24 "You are all that I have," | says my soul, "therefore I will hope in | you, O LORD." 25 You are good to those who | wait for you, to all that | search for you. 26 It is good that one | should wait quietly for the salvation | of the LORD. SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 1:114 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 6 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 7for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. 8 Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, 9who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, 12 and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. 13Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: Luke 17:5-10 The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" 6The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. 7 Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here at once and take your place at the table'? 8Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink'? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'" The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated SERMON Pastor Carey Hovland Silence for reflection and then we invite you to stand and sing: HYMN OF THE DAY: For the Fruit of All Creation (ELW 679)

APOSTLES CREED We confess the faith of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church with the Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS TEMPLE TALK David Huskey PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. You may kneel or sit as you are able. Each petition ends with: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Into your hands, O Holy One, we entrust all for whom we pray, confident in your abundant and abiding mercy; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. CONFESSION AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection.

God of overflowing grace, we come to you with repentant hearts. Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. Forgive us for ignoring the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, move us to turn to you, and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in + Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God's mercy, now and forever. Amen. PEACE Please stand as we greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

OFFERTORY SENTENCES Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. PREFACE CHANTED by the pastor HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

All baptized persons are welcomed to Communion when they are visiting this congregation. If you wish to commune, please come forward to receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ with your hands cupped. If you cannot or do not wish to commune you may come forward with your hands crossed over your chest for a blessing.
