Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions. 2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary. 3. Figures to the right indicate full marks. Q.1 (a) For simply supported rectangular plates, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, deduce 07 expression for deflection at centre. (b) Write the w-surface equation for a fixed elliptical plate subjected to a uniform load 07 q over the entire plate. Take b = 2a. Determine maximum deflection using following data: (a) q = 15 kPa (b) a = 0.5m (c ) t = 12.5 mm (d) E = 210 GPa (e) = 1/3 (a) Show that for a flat circular steel plate subjected to a uniform pressure on one 07 surface, the maximum stress when periphery is simply supported is 1.65 times that when the periphery is clamped. Take poissons ratio, = 0.3. (b) Find the maximum deflection in a circular plate subjected to a concentrated load 07 P at the centre. The plate is fixed all around the edges. Take radius = 2m, t = 50 mm, = 0.3, E = 208 GPa. P = 20 kN. OR (b) Find Mr for simply supported circular plate of radius a, having a hole in the 07 centre of radius b. Assume = 0.18, q = 60 N/m2, a = 4000mm and b = 1000 mm. (a) State, without proof, the equilibrium equation for a plate of constant flexural rigidity D in polar co-ordinates. (b) Find the strain energy expression in terms of w-function of a plate element subjected to following: (a) Bending moment Mx and My (Pure bending) (b) Twisting moment Mxy (Pure twisting) OR (a) Using finite difference method, determine the maximum deflection of a square plate (a x a) fixed all along its edges and subjected to a uniformly distributed loading q. Take mesh size,h = a/2. Compare the result if plate edges are all simply supported. (b) Derive an equation of w-expression of a rectangular plate (a x b) derived from Navier solution for following cases subjected to uniformly distributed load: (i) Plate without resting on soil (ii) Plate with resting on soil Having foundation modulus k. Write the equations for concentrated load. 07 07

Q.4

(a) Derive equations of equilibrium for general bending theory of uniformly loaded 07 cylindrical shell. Mark important internal stress resultants. (b) Find displacement w of the crown and at the edge for a circular dome for the 07 following data: = 60, q = 2500 N/m2, r = 30 m, t = 50 mm, = 0.2, E = 1.15 x 105 N/mm2. Also plot for w at the edge and = 15, 30, 45 & 60. (a) Give the classification of shell based on shell curvature with neat sketches. (b) A simply supported at (x = 0 and x = L) semicircular cylindrical shell is subjected to a snow load q which is uniformly distributed over its plan area. Given the radius of the shell is a, thickness is h, modulus of elasticity and Poissons ratio are E and respectively, determine the membrane stresses in the shell. OR (a) Develop basic equation of membrane analysis of a paraboloid of revolution. Give stress function , Z & R if 2a = 16m, 2b = 22m, rise = 2.5m and thickness = 80 mm. (b) The tank shown in Fig. 1 has a cylindrical top and a conical bottom. The tank is supported by a structure (not shown) that applies only vertical forces around the parallel AB. The tank is lled to depth H = 2:5R with water of weight density w. Determine the expressions for the membrane forces just above and just below the parallel AB. 07 07
