I am delighted, once again, to have this opportunity of expressing the sincere appreciation of the Australian Soccer Federation to Coca-ColaBottlers throughout Australia for making the finance available to conduct this third Australian Youth Championship. Since FIFA introduced the World Youth Tournament for the Coca-Cola Cup this National Youth Championship has taken on added significance. From last year's Championship a squad of players was selected which formed the nucleus of the Young Socceroos who travelled to New Zealand and to South America to contest the 1979 FIFA competition. The Team was very successful in New Zealand, and also performed extremely well in South America notwithstanding the fact that they did not win the Tournament. Eventual winners Paraguay, one of the best teams in South America, will come very close to taking out the World Titles in the Finals which will be held in Japan in late August and early Septemberof this year. From these ChampionshipsNational Coach, Rudi Gutendorf. will be selecting players who will play two matches in August of this year against the Yugoslav Team which will be stopping in Australia en route to Japan to contest the World ChampionshipFinals. Also, players will be chosenin a squad which will be prepared over the next two years to participate in the Final Competition of the World Youth Championship which will be played in Australia in 1981. There is no doubt that the participation of the Coca-Cola Company and the -Australian Bottlers in the game of soccer hasalready been tremendously beneficial to the game in this country. Weshould all be extremely grateful for the assistance that we are receiving. I take this opportunity of thanking the Board of Managementand officials, and the Secretaryand his staff of the Victorian Soccer Federation for staging this very important event, and I wish all those competing a very enjoyable and successful week of soccer. May the best team emerge as winners of the Coca-ColaBottlers Cup.

THE
1979 FIFA
WORLD
YOUTH
TOURNAMENT
When FIF A President, J oao Havelange conceived the idea for this Tournament, thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Coca-Cola Company, he opened up a new era for Youth Football in Australia. The year 1977 saw the introduction of the Coca-Cola Bottlers National Under 18 Championship. The event catered for players under the age of 19 in 1978 and in future the event will be known as the Coca-Cola Bottlers Australian Youth Championship. The new name of this event enables the Federation to vary the age qualification of players in line with qualification requirements of the FIF A World Youth Tournament conditions. The first World Youth Tournament was played in Tunisia in 1977 and was won by the U.S.S.R. Team on penalty kicks from Mexico. Australia was precluded from participating in the competition because the Oceania Football Confederation had not conducted a Youth Tournament of its own in order to find a qualifier. In September, 1978, the Federation engaged the services of Rudi Gutendorf as National Team Coach. An entry had already been submitted in the 1979 FIF A World Youth Tournament and Australia was grouped with New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Republic of China (Taiwan). The Republic of China subsequently withdrew due to the non-availability of entry visasfor New Zealand. Rudi Gutendorf had very little opportunity to prepare his squad as the matches were played in early November. Training camps were conducted at the Bill Englefield Stadium in Sydney with some forty or more players taking part. The squad was reduced to the following eighteen players who travelled to Auckland, New Zealand, on 9th November, 1978. G. Christopoulos (Vic) J. Olvei (Vic) M. Milovanovic (A.C.T.) P. Tombides (W.A.) The Coca-ColaExport Corporation sponsoredthe visit to New Zealand providing Team and officials' uniforms and a wide variety of aids not the least of which was copious quantities of Coke, Fanta and Leed. Team strips, tracksuits and walk-out suits were provided by Umbro International (Australia) Pty. Ltd. Following the New Zealand success preparation commencedfor the Second Preliminary Round to be played somewherein South America. It had beenhoped that thesematches would not take place until April, 1979, in Argentina. However, FIF A insisted that they be played in February, the eventual venue being Paraguay. There was little time for preparation but a concentrated effort was made. The Team played against Hertha 03 Berlin and the Federation is very thankful to all concerned for their valued co-operation. The final squad of eighteen players and officials travelled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, departing Sydney on 27th January, 1979, to complete final preparation and await a decision on the venue for the Tournament and Australia's opponent to join Israel. The touring party was as follows: G. Christopoulos(Vic) A. Davidson(Vic) C. Hall (N.S.W.) S. Hogg (A.C.T.) I. Hunter (N.S.W.) G. Jennings(N.N.S.W.) E. Krncevic (Vic) D. Moulis (A.C.T.) I.
