American Water Works Association AWWA B100 4 Definitions Anthracite: A granular hard coal used as a filtration medium in multi-media filters. Backwash: The procedure used to flush deposited solids out of the granular filter at the end of the filter run. This normally involves feeding clean water in the base of the granular bed and washing it in an upward direction. Design Engineer: The Engineering Company responsible for specifying the design requirements for ROS on the drawing sheet, in accordance with the requirements of this specification. Filtering Materials

Filter Medium: The term filter "media" is in common use to describe granular filtering materials. Grammatically, it is plural and should apply to the bulk material to be installed in several filters. (A single filter has a filter medium). To avoid ambiguity the term "filtering material" used in the American Water Works Association (AWWA B100) specification is preferred. Packing layer: A granular material, coarser than the working filtering material, which is not intended to capture suspended solids and neither is it intended to move or be fluidized during filter backwash. Polyelectrolyte: An organic chemical compound with many repeated structural units produced by uniting many primary units, called monomers. It is added to the water to agglomerate particles into larger groupings called flocs, which then settle by gravity. Pretreatment: All the unit operations upstream of the reverse osmosis (RO) system that have purpose to eliminate or minimize the fouling potential of the RO feed water. Saudi Aramco Inspector: The person or company authorized by the Saudi Aramco Inspection Department to inspect ROS to the requirements of this specification. Silt Density Index (SDI): A measurement of the rate of plugging of a 0.45 micron Millipore filter at 207 kPa (30 psig) applied pressure. 5 General Requirements 5.1 5.2 The vendor shall be fully responsible for the performance of the system and for each component in the system for a minimum of one year. The skid shall support the total system for transportation to the field and shall require only setting on a prepared deck or foundation. After making field connections to prepared terminal points it should be ready for commissioning. Each skid shall support complete subsystems (e.g., pretreatment system, chemical cleaning system), requiring only skid-to-skid and terminal point connections in the field. The skid shall be fully automatic, including backwashing of all systems and chemical injection. However, the membrane cleaning system shall be designed for manual and automatic operation. The vendor shall provide all the special tools for assembly, disassembly, and unit maintenance, along with complete instructions for their use. Provisions shall be made, where applicable, to prevent organic growth and dehydration of membranes during shutdown.

Performance Guarantees 6.1 6.2 The water quality produced shall comply with the Saudi Aramco Sanitary Code (SASC-S-17) relating to quality of water intended for human consumption. The vendor shall guarantee that the membrane, when operated in accordance with the instruction manual, will produce the specified product water flow rate at the specified water quality for a minimum of three years from the date of commissioning. The vendor shall propose pretreatment chemicals (scale inhibitor, coagulant, flocculent) approved by the membrane manufacturer and Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco. These chemicals shall comply with applicable health regulations and the vendor shall state the recommended and guaranteed maximum dosage.

6.3

Design The design of the RO skid shall be based on an accurate raw water analysis provided by the proponent and checked by the vendor. This analysis should include all the parameters shown in the technical data sheet "water analysis" in the Appendix. Analyses for suspended solids (SS), pH, alkalinity and gases should be performed at the point of sampling or alternatively pressurized samples should be taken if analyses are to be carried out in the laboratory. The membrane design configuration and performance should be determined on the basis of computer projection programs. These projections should be within the membrane manufacturers' design guidelines. Additionally, antiscalant projections should be carried out to determine the required dosage of antiscalant for scaling prevention. Copies of the output of these programs should be made available for review by CSD in order to check that the optimum membrane configuration is being used as well as the optimum antiscalant dosage. The RO Skid Unit shall contain, but not necessarily be limited to, the following equipment: 7.1 Pretreatment System The pretreatment system shall consist of a filtration section in conjunction with chemical conditioning. The system shall ensure that the Silt Density Index (SDI) meets the membrane manufacturer's SDI requirements. 7.1.1 Chlorination 1. The vendor shall provide chlorination system for control of microbiological fouling to the membranes when specified.

2. 3.

The vendor shall consider the membrane tolerance to chlorine and a dechlorination system shall be provided if required. Dechlorination systems shall use activated carbon or injection of sodium bisulfide and shall incorporate installation of OxidationReduction Potential (ORP) sensors for additional membrane safeguard.

7.1.2

Filtration System Characteristics of an acceptable filtration system: 1. 2. 3. Media filtration followed by cartridge filters. The initial fill of filtering materials in the filter vessels shall be included in the vendor's proposal. The filter media shall conform to uniformity coefficients of 1.3 or less for sand and 1.5 or less for anthracite and shall meet the requirements of 32-SAMSS-034. The size distribution and specific gravities of the filter media shall be such that do not allow interpenetration. The packing layer configuration provided shall not allow the working filtering materials to penetrate into the underdrainage. The packing layers shall not be fluidized during backwash. The vendor shall state the filtration and backwash velocities of the filtration system. Flow meters to indicate and control these velocities shall be included in the system as well as differential pressure indicators. There shall be free board in the filter vessel (25 cm in excess of the anticipated media expansion level) to provide additional safeguard against media losses during backwash. The system shall provide adequate flow and distribution to uniformly expand the filter bed during backwashing, and to uniformly collect the filtered water during the filter cycle. Backwashing shall be initiated automatically based on a predetermined head loss in the filter bed. The vendor shall provide a filtration system that will meet the quality requirements with regard to SDI. All the cartridge-type filter elements shall have manual and automatic air and drain valves.
