How electricity is generated to your

home
1. Steam is generated at the electricty plant by the burning of fossil fuels - or at
a nuclear or hydroelectric plant.

2. The steam powers a turbine which spins a huge magnet inside a copper wire.
Heat energy converts to mechanical energy which then converts to electrical
energy in the generator.

3. Elecricity flows from the power plant through wires to the step up
transformer. The transformer raises the pressure so it can travel long
distances - its raised as high as 756,000 volts

4. The electric current then runs through the power lines to the substation
transformer where pressure is lowered to between 2000 and 13000 volts

5. Electricity is then taken through the lines to a pole transfomer - or a

transformer box if underground - and pressure is lowered again to between
120 and 240 volts

6. From here electricity comes into your home through a service box, where
your meter is located to measure how much you use. Wires take electricty
around your home powering your lights and all your other appliance
Electric Sockets and plugs
AC power plugs and sockets are devices for removably connecting electrically-
operated devices to the commercial power supply.

An electric plug is a male electrical connector with contact prongs to connect

mechanically and electrically to slots in the matching female socket

Wall sockets, (sometimes also known as power points,[1][2] power sockets, electric
receptacles, or electrical outlets) are female electrical connectors that have slots or
holes which accept and deliver current to the prongs of inserted plugs. Sockets are
designed to accept only matching plugs and reject all others. To reduce the risk of
injury or death by electric shock, some plug and socket systems incorporate various
safety features and design aspects.

Wiring in a Three-Pin Plugs

• After opening the plug lay the cable along the plug so as to get the required
length of outer covering that needs removing.

• Carefully cut round the outer covering taking care not to cut the inner cores.

• Remove the cable clamp and place the outer covering under the clamp and
tighten.

• Place the cores into their correct positions:-BROWN - FUSE: BLUE - LEFT
HAND PIN: GREEN/YELLOW - EARTH PIN (TOP)

• Cut the cores to the required length then strip the insulation back 5-6mm and
connect up making sure that there are NO stray strands.

• Replace the top

Dangers with Mains Circuits
Two dangers with mains circuits are:

1. Overloading

2. Short circuits

OVERLOADING

It is when an electric plug is connected with many plugs then the plugs can
burn

What are the safe precautions

when Using electricity

1. Don't stick anything into a plug socket unless it is a plug, this doe not include
fingers, pencils or scissors.

2. Do not use wet hands when turning on electrical equipment.

3. Ensure that the plug has the correct fuse rating for the appliance.

4. Ensure that if the appliance needs to be earthed then it is.

5. Ensure that the fuse box has the correct rating for the power requirements of
the building.

6. Always turn off the plug sockets when a plug is not in it otherwise your house
will be swamped by delta wave radiation.

7. Don't stick anything into a plug socket unless it is a plug, this doe not include
fingers, pencils or scissors.

8. Do not use wet hands when turning on electrical equipment.

9. Ensure that the plug has the correct fuse rating for the appliance.

10.Ensure that if the appliance needs to be earthed then it is.

11.Ensure that the fuse box has the correct rating for the power requirements of
the building.

12.Always turn off the plug sockets when a plug is not in it otherwise your house
will be swamped by delta wave radiation.
