Choosing Your Degree

CHOOSING

YOUR DEGREE
DEGREE STRUCTURE
Courses are measured by points most undergraduate courses are worth 15 points each. For most degree programmes students are required to complete 120 points per year. This generally means completing 4 courses per semester or 8 over the full academic year. A load of 100 points per year/50 points per semester is dened as full-time. The maximum course load is 170 points per year, which includes up to 30 points in Summer School. In most undergraduate degree programmes students are also required to include 30 points (2 courses) of General Education to provide you with a broader academic perspective. For details on the courses available and on how this will affect your specic degree please visit: www.auckland.ac.nz/ generaleducation/ A complete Bachelors degree in Arts, Science and Business comprises 360 points. In most of the professional and applied disciplines, 480 points are required. Generally courses are assessed by a combination of course work and a nal written examination. Grading is on a 12 level scale: A+ to C- are passing grades, D+ to D- are fail grades.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Course The basic component of all academic programmes. A course is normally taught and assessed over one semester. Degree Principal qualication awarded by the University. GPA Grade point average a means of measuring students academic performance. The average grade achieved in the equivalent of a minimum full-time enrolment (100 points) is expressed numerically on a scale of 0 (no passes) to 9 (A+ average). Honours Degrees In some cases completed within prescribed time limits, may be awarded with honours which signify advanced or distinguished study. Points A value assigned to a course or other work to indicate its weighting within the Universitys certicates, diplomas or degrees. Programme A prescribed set of one or more courses or other work which on satisfactory completion leads to the award of a University of Auckland certicate, degree or diploma. Specialisation A coherent group of related courses from different subjects.

The University also offers a wide range of applied and specialist degrees. These programmes are offered in Architecture, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Law, Medicine, Music, Nursing, Optometry, Performing Arts, Pharmacy, Planning, Property, Social Work, Technology, Theology and Visual Arts. General degree programmes always include a major and usually a minor. A major means a set of courses in one subject or eld taken through to advanced level, while a minor is a smaller set of courses in another specied subject, taken to intermediate level. You may also choose to take two subjects through to advanced level and complete what is called a double major. This provides you with a broader base of skills and knowledge, and is likely to enhance your career opportunities.

CONJOINT PROGRAMME
Further exibility is offered by enrolling in a conjoint programme, allowing you to complete two degrees concurrently. For example, if you would like to do both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science, you can enrol in a conjoint degree, which would enable you to nish two three-year degrees in four years. See www.auckland.ac.nz for more details on possible conjoint combinations.

BACHELORS DEGREE
The rst degree programme in all disciplines is a bachelors degree. Flexible general bachelor degree programmes are offered in the Faculties of Arts, Business and Science. These programmes allow you to choose majors or specialisations from a broad range of subjects and at the same time fully develop your critical-thinking skills.

BRIDGING PROGRAMMES

THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND HAS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED, COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF RESEARCH-BASED, AND COURSE-BASED DEGREE PROGRAMMES RANGING FROM POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS, TO MASTERS AND DOCTORAL DEGREES.

POSTGRADUATE STUDY

An independent evaluation carried out under the auspices of the New Zealand Government showed that The University of Auckland is the leading research university in the country. The University is also introducing a wider range of Masters by coursework degrees. Postgraduate students are provided with a stimulating research environment, research supervision, infrastructure and support of the highest quality. Masters and PhD programmes are offered in all 9 faculties of the University. Most (but not all) Masters programmes are of 1 year duration and vary in structure. They may be by research only, by a combination of course work and
10

research, or by course work only. (The 1-year Masters are generally available to students who have completed a relevant 4-year Bachelors or Honours programme). PhD programmes are by research only and generally require 4 years of full-time study.
ELIGIBILITY

Acceptance into a graduate programme is at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty. As a general rule, you will need to have completed a recognised undergraduate or rst degree in a relevant discipline, and to have obtained a better than average grade point average. Graduate status does not automatically guarantee entry into a specic programme. Individual

A bridging programme is a way of ensuring you have the appropriate background knowledge to undertake a Masters degree successfully. A bridging programme will comprise courses recommended by the Graduate Advisor of the relevant faculty. It will vary in content and length, according to the degree to which your previous studies have prepared you for your proposed graduate programme. Usually, it will be of 1 to 2 semesters duration, and comprise a mix of relevant second and third year undergraduate courses. In recommending a bridging programme, the Faculty may also set conditions for eventual entry into a Postgraduate Diploma or Masters programme. In most cases you will be required to achieve a higher than average GPA (grade point average) in the relevant 3rd year courses. Where the bridging programme is for one year, the Faculty will attempt to structure it in such a way that your courses may be credited toward a qualication such as a Diploma or Graduate Diploma. This means that if you pass all your courses but do not meet conditions for entry to a Masters or Postgraduate Diploma, you will nevertheless have gained a qualication in the time spent at The University of Auckland.

Tuition Fees 2006

TUITION FEES 2006

THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND CHARGES FEES ON THE BASIS OF YOUR COURSE ENROLMENT RATHER THAN BY PROGRAMME. THE FEES FOR COURSES VARY FROM FACULTY TO FACULTY, AND SOMETIMES WITHIN A FACULTY, DEPENDING ON THE RESOURCES REQUIRED FOR THAT SPECIFIC COURSE.

Each course offered at the University is given a point value, and your workload and fees are calculated in terms of total points enrolled. Most undergraduate courses are worth 15 points and are taught over one semester. A normal full-time load per year is 120 points. To get an indicative fee for your programme of study for one year, you would normally multiply the per point fee by 120. Other fees payable on enrolment at the University, such as materials and student services fees, will also vary depending on your course load. In addition to fees, you can expect to pay about $1,000 per year on books and stationery. Some faculties also have fees for eld trips or site visits. To get a more detailed look at tuition fees for international students per programme, visit The University of Auckland web site at www.auckland. ac.nz/international
Note: Certain categories of international students pay tuition fees at the same rate as New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, by virtue of government-to-government reciprocal agreements. These include citizens and permanent residents of Australia and German or French citizens enrolled in postgraduate programmes at a New Zealand university. Similarly, fees payable for students on Rotary International, Commonwealth, Fulbright and DAAD scholarships are also calculated at the domestic rather than the international rate. Tuition, examination and research fees for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents are listed in the Calendar and the on the Universitys web site: www.auckland.ac.nz
