MEET OUR MEMBER

SOI 754

SANTO PIETRO CERMINARA (PETE) was born in Savelli, Italy on June 29th 1938. Savelli is a small town in the Province of Calabria. His Parents were Joseph Cerminara and Maria Fabiano. Pete was 17 years old when his family decided to come to America because his grandfather had come in 1918 and his grandmother in 1934. So, his parents and 7 children, Tony, Pete, Emilio, Phyllis, Clara, Frank and Angelo headed for the United States. They were originally scheduled to come on the Andria Doria but Pete would have been 18 and would not have been able to leave Italy so they took an earlier ship. As we know, the Andrea Doria never made it here. His ship came into New York harbor but Ellis Island had been shut down. The family boarded a train in New York and arrived in Steubenville where they were met by his grandfather and some friends who took them to Virginville, WV where they would make their home for a year. They then moved to Follansbee,

WV where the family resided the rest of his parents lives.. None of the family spoke English and he does have some funny stories about learning the language.. Pete had very little formal education as he only went to the 3rd grade in Italy. He found work with a contractor and did odd jobs. He first found a job in Coriopolis, PA then found a job in

Pittsburgh with the Frick Family doing greenhouse work. In 1965, he found a job in Weirton, WV for a contractor. He met his wife, Mary Ann Pizzini, in Weirton, and they were married on April 16th 1966. He is the father of 3 children: Craig, Perry and Nichole. He is the grandfather of 4: Paige, Joseph, Gianna and Jordan. In 1967, he was finally able to get a job with the Oglebay Nortona coal mine and he and Mary Ann moved to Barnesville, OH. Pete worked there 3 years and then with the Y&O coal company for 7 years. He and his wife decided to buy a restaurant and bar and he became the owner of the DOro Inn and Pub. In 1989, he turned the restaurant into a pizza shop and then opened 2 more shops, one in Wheeling, and one in Bridgeport. The shops were called Mama Mias. He ran all the businesses until he retired in 2000. Pete loves to garden and cook and enjoys volunteering at the Sons.

MEMBERSHIP DUES ADDRESS CHANGES Your 2014 dues should be paid before January 1, 2014. You may start paying your 2014 dues after October 1, 2014. Italian Member dues are $40. Bar member dues are $25. Keep and CONTINUE to use your white key card, renewals do NOT get a new key card. Your new membership card will be available at the bar soon after payment. Mail dues payments to the lodge with Attention David Badia on the envelope. If you would like your membership card mailed, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope. You must have a current membership to sign up for daily, weekly and monthly drawings. You may also contact David for membership applications and address changes. It is the perfect place to hold your special event. We can serve spaghetti with sausage or meatballs, or you can have an outside caterer. We ask that all alcohol be purchased at the bar. The rental fee is only $75 for members and $100 for nonmembers. Call the lodge 740-676-7137 and check with Janice to see if your date is available. 2013 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Six lodge scholarships and two memorial scholarships from Dave & Bobbie Lucas in memory of Bobbie's Parents & Grandparents were awarded at the Anniversary Dinner on Sunday, August 18, 2013. Lodge scholarships were awarded to: Gina Ciancone, Mia Colaianni, Alexandra DiStefano, Giovanna Loccisano, Leandra Reed and Delani Reynolds. Presutti Memorial Scholarship Winners were: Anthony Ciancone & Jennifer Fox. Congratulations to all the scholarships recipients. Thanks to Dave & Bobbie Lucas for their continued support of our scholarship program. We are currently selling the scholarship tickets for 2014.. Tickets are $10.00, and are eligible for a monthly $25 drawing and two $100 drawings when scholarships are awarded next year. Call the lodge if you would like a ticket.. BOCCE NEWS The bocce season ended on September 25th. with the annual Steak Fry and a single elimination tournament. Indoor bocce will begin November 6, 2013. Memorial Bricks are still available at a cost of $40.00. Make checks payable to Sons of Italy Bocce. See Doug Hartlieb or pick up an order blank at the lodge. Bocce Sponsors are listed on the front of this newsletter.. Mille Grazie!!! THANKSGIVING SAUSAGE We will be taking orders at the bar for Thanksgiving sausage November 4-18.. The sausage can be picked up on Tuesday, November 26th 12:00 - 5:30 P.M. Sausage is still $3.25 a pound and must be paid at the time you order. You may order Link or bulk in ( 3, 4, or 5 pound packages. VETERAN'S DINNER Our lodge will host a spaghetti dinner for veterans on November 8, 2013 from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. All veterans and their families are welcome. Free of charge. HALL DECORATING PARTY We will decorate the hall for Christmas on Friday, November 15, 2013. The party will begin at 6:45 foll owing the daily dra wing. Refreshments will be served. Come and join the fun!! CIGAR NIGHT Pete Cuffaro reports that the cigar night was a success again this year. They smoked cigars, ate a great steak dinner and played bocce. The proceeds of cigar night will be used to benefit the bocce fundraiser. Good weather and many eager volunteers resulted in a great weekend. We couldn't have done it without YOU. Our volunteers are invited to a dinner at the lodge on Sunday, October 13, 2013 beginning at 4:00 p.m. We will host the Italian Festival board and their volunteers and honor our members, Gilda Reed and John DeBlasis, who were the 2013 Italian Americans of the year. CHRISTMAS SAUSAGE Orders will be taken for Christmas Sausage November 29 - December 11. Sausage will be ready for pick-up on Tuesday, December 17, 12:00 - 5:30 P.M.. Sausage is still $3.25 a pound and must be paid at the time you order. You may order 2, 4, or 5 Lb. Packages in link or bulk. WINE FESTA The Cultural Committee's annual Holiday Wine Festa will be held at the hall on Saturday, December 7. As always, we will have some great food and various wines for tasting. Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for guests. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the Festa begins at 6:30 p.m. Pete & Erin Cuffaro are the chairmen for this event and they are planning an evening of fine wine, delicious food, and fellowship. Your favorite wines will be available to order with delivery in time for Christmas. Get your tickets early for this event. It is always sold out. Remember, Do not eat before you come. S.O.I. cookbooks will be available for purchase. CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas party for our members children and grandchildren ages 10 and under, will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Food, soft drinks, gifts and pictures with Santa will be provided. Parents or Grandparents may register children November 23December 7, 2013. A sign up sheet will be available at the bar. If you are going to mail in the information, be sure to include the childs name, sex and age along with your name, relationship, and key card #. We are asking for donations to help buy bikes for prizes. If you or your company can donate either a bike or money, call Janice at the lodge. We are also looking for a Santa. Call the lodge if you know someone who would be interested.
