ON THE POLICE BEAT

Sheriff warns about telemarketing calls The Unicoi County Sheriffs Department has seen an increase in citizens receiving telemarketing calls, and Sheriff Kent Harris is warning the public to take caution when dealing with these callers. In many cases, the citizens could not even understand the caller, were called late at night and/or were called numerous times even after advising them not to contact the person again. I encourage residents who do not want to receive these calls from these telemarketers to register on the National Do Not Call Registry at www. donotcall.gov or call 1-888382-1212, Harris said. Also you can dial *77 or 1177 on a rotary phone to reject callers who block their caller ID from anonymously calling your phone. To trace a harassing call, do the following, hang up and then get a new dial tone. Dial *57, listen for instructions and report the date and time to the local providers. Harris hopes these precautionary tips will help stop harassing phone calls to citizens. Harris said some of the phone calls are from Canadian and Jamaican area codes. He warned to not be tricked by a phone call saying that you have won the lottery. This is a scam. Do not respond, Harris said. Tell them to not call back and hang up. UCSD taking applications for Citizens Police Academy The third annual Citizens Police Academy of the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department will begin May 21, and the UCSD is now accepting applications. Criminal Investigator and Training Ofcer Ken Potter will present the program. Guest instructors will also participate. Classes will be each Thursday, beginning May 21, from 6 to 9 p.m, and will conclude on June 25. Topics to be covered will be child abuse, domestic violence, nger printing, crime scene protection, terrorism and more. The classes will be held in the courtroom of the Unicoi County Courthouse, located on North Main Avenue. Participants will learn real police issues and work mock crime scenes, Applications can be picked up and returned to the sheriffs department at 102 N. Main Ave., Erwin. Applicants must be 21 or older with a clean background. The class is limited to 50 students. Sheriff Kent Harris said hes proud to present this academy for the third year. For more information, call Potter at 743-1850. Erwin man faces charge of third-offense DUI When an ofcer saw a passenger hanging out the sunroof of a small red car on Old Asheville Highway, he immediately stopped the car and charged the driver for driving under the inuence. Eric Lee Foster, 27, 110 Signal Lane, Erwin, was charged with third-offense DUI after he failed eld sobriety tasks administered by Unicoi County Sheriffs Deputy Andy Slagle. Foster blew a .18 on the breathalyzer, which is above the legal limit of .08. Sheriff, officer acquire donated items in Virginia Sheriff Kent Harris, Capt. Rick Butler and Lt. Jason Tilson went to Norfolk, Va., and the U.S. Navy Base last week and picked up numerous donated items through the Defense Reutilization /Marketing Ofce and Law Support Ofce programs. The sheriff has obtained commercial ooring to cover the entire oor of the new jail workhouse facility and many other items. On Friday, a second trailer was brought to Virginia by Tyler Lynch and Deputy Burt Thomas to assist in loading the ooring. Harris works with secretary Barbara Pringle in locating surplus supplies that can be donated to the UCSD by the military. Requests have been made for the wiring and lighting. Harris said the UCSD is also looking for paint, insulation and other building materials. The ooring alone saved the county thousands of dollars and our inmates can perform the labor, Harris said. Barbara and Joy Grindstaff have been instrumental in locating these items and doing the paperwork required. I am committed to saving all the money we can on this project and we have been stockpiling donated materials that can be used. The donated items are worth $122,000. Harris also thanked Darrell Woods and Lynch for the use of their trucks to haul the items back to Erwin.
