Chapter earns 3rd highest grades of all
IFC chapters for spring semester
High Sigma Willie Whealen
refects on Lambda Chis
continuous academic improvement
Coming into the spring
semester, I knew that maintaining
our performance from the past
fall, in which we earned the 4th
highest grades out of all fraternities,
was a necessity. While that was
a signifcant achievement for our
chapter, I felt that cracking the top
3 would really push us across the
threshold of becoming one of the
best houses at Mizzou.
Earlier this summer, when I frst
heard the news that we had achieved
this goal, I could not help but feel
proud of all of our members. In a
semester in which we increased
our involvement with Mizzou IFC,
debuted a new spring philanthropy
event and played a key role as the
large house in the winning pairing
for Greek Week, the fact that we
maintained this level of scholarly
excellence is even more admirable.
Making those things happen required
a great amount of individual effort
from all our members, and to see
that everyone still had the drive to
excel academically in addition to
working hard to beneft the house
was truly inspiring.
Going forward, I hope that this
is not viewed as the pinnacle of
our improvement as a house, but
rather as a benchmark for sustained
success in the future. Every day, we
discuss ways to establish ourselves
as a dominant house on this campus,
and our recent success in fulflling
our academic duties has certainly
set us on our way to fulflling that
goal.

Letter from the Housing Corp. President
Brothers,
First off, we all need to thank Ron
Graves for his dedication and true
commitment to the Gamma Kappa
Zeta over the last 10 years. Because
of his hard work, Gamma Kappa is
stronger than ever at the University of
Missouri. Ron has been very gracious
and helpful during this transition, and
for that we cannot thank him enough.
We know that he will enjoy spending
more time with his family, which is
very well deserved.
For those of you who did not see
the update at the end of August, I
have been appointed by the Housing
Corporation Board to be the interim
President until April elections.
We all know that the Gamma Kappa
Zeta has been making tremendous
strides at the University of Missouri
and are getting closer every year to
being the top chapter at Mizzou. I
want to encourage all of you to get
involved as much as possible. Now
more than ever we
need all alumni to
step up and help
the chapter which
all of us learned
so much from.
If you would
like to help out
with the various alumni organization
(Housing Corp., Alumni Association,
or Advisory Board) please let us know.
If you want to help in any other means
besides volunteering your time, please
get in contact with us.
If you have any questions about
the current housing situation, please
feel free to contact me or any of
the Housing Corporation board
members. We are hoping to have an
update for everyone at Homecoming
this year. Please plan on attending.

Yours in Zeta Alpha Chi,
Brett Anwander

Letter from the GKAA President
A church in my
neighboorhood
has one of those
signs out front
where they post
i ns pi r a t i ona l
Bible verses and
quotes, and one
week recently
they put up a
quote from Sophocles: Without labor,
nothing prospers. Of course, that
struck me, since Lambda Chi translates
a little differently,
but there was our open motto, right
there along Hampton Ave.
Taking on the presidency of the
alumni association wasnt something I
expected to do, but its an opportunity
that Im excited to jump into and run
with the best I can. Our translation of that
proverb is, naught without labor, and I
will put as much work into this as I can to
build on the successes weve already had
and achieve new goals that the board and
I will set in the coming weeks.
The chapter has experienced
quite a but of success of their own
recently, with booming recruitment,
victories and strong showings in
the Homecoming and Greek Week
competitions, academic prowess, and
campus involvement. As alumni, we
owe it to them to mirror their efforts
and successes and fulfll our oaths to
support the fraternity throughout our
lives and careers.
A lot of times, people think of this
as being a check you write once or
twice a year, but theres so much more
we can do as alumni to give the active
members our support, particularly
those of us who still live near Columbia
and make it into town occasionally.
One of my personal goals for my term
in offce is to engage our alumni on
more fronts than just fnancially, and
get our undergrads more one-on-one
time with our alums
At the end of this newsletter, there are
a couple pages outlining the campaign
well be undertaking to facilitate this.
Its something Brett and I had worked
on with the board and a few of the
undergraduates for a few months, and I
hope that by making more information
and suggestions available to you, you
might be able to undertake one or more
small contributions that will add up to
really beneft the chapter in the long term.
Im looking forward to meeting a
lot of you at Homecoming weve
already been making lots of plans for the
traditional tailgate at the chapter house,
and the e-mails and calls Ive felded
from alumni so far have left me with
the impression that were going to have
quite a turnout. In the meantime, please
dont hesitate to get in touch with any
questions, concerns, or requests. Im
happy to get back to you with whatever
information I can, whether it be a direct
answer or a contact that can get you
what you need.

Featured Undergraduate: Brendan Meyer
Page 3
Brother Brendan Meyer, 1632,
was raised in the Chicago suburb of
Highland Park, Ill, graduating from
Highland Park High School in 2009.
He came to Mizzou to pursue his
dream of becoming a sports writer.
Brendan joined Lambda Chi his
freshman year to meet new people and
be a part of something bigger than myself.
He is very fond of his associate classing,
saying, We were all so different from one
another, but we got along extremely well.
His most memorable moment in
college was the 2010 Homecoming game
against Oklahoma and specifically rushing
the field after Missouri upset the Sooners.
Brendan is a journalism major
with an emphasis in print and digital
news. He worked as the Missouri
mens basketball beat writer for the
Columbia Missourian last year, and
was nominated for multiple writing
awards while covering the Tigers.
This summer Brendan is interning
at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch under
senior baseball writer Rick Hummel,
where he attends ever Cardinals home
game. He will graduate this December
and hopes to become a sports writer
wherever he is needed.
Brother Phil Batton grew up in
Springfeld, Missouri and graduated
from Senior High School, which is
now called Central. He decided to
join Lambda Chi after attending a
rush dinner in Kansas City during the
summer of 1950 and going to events
during rush week that September.
Phil says his pledge class was a
great bunch of guys, and that he still
keeps in touch with most of them.
His pledge father was Joe ORourke.
His most memorable moment
in Lambda Chi was when his future
wife was crowned Crescent Girl, at
the White Rose Formal in December.
1954. While in the chapter, he served
as rush chairman and ritualist.
He graduated from Mizzou in
January 1956 with a degree in civil
engineering. He went on to get a masters
in engineering management in 1971
from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
Phil married Shirley Ann Lyle, a
Zeta Tau Alpha member, in 1955. Their
two children each have a daughter. He
served in the Navy for many years as an
aviator and engineer before retiring from
the Naval Reserves and working in the
private sector. He retired to Goodyear,
Arizona in 1995.
Phil turned 81 years old in July.
He travels the country in a motorhome,
from May to October and is a member
of a Flying Club. In the winter, he pilots
a Cessna 172 about the skies of Arizona.
Another hobby of Phils is
shooting trap & skeet & practical
pistol in the winter and hunting
prairie dogs in the Summer.
He maintains the e-mail list and
directory for the members of Gamma
Kappa Zeta that attended Mizzou from
the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. He calls
them The Group.
Its with great pleasure that Im
allowed to introduce myself to you
as the current High Pi for the Gamma
Kappa Zeta! I was approached about
the position late in 2012 and accepted
the role beginning with the start of the
semester back in January of this year.
Im honored to be able to help guide the
current Chapter and be able to give back
to the Fraternity in an active role. A bit
about me, Im proud to be a Founding
fathers of the Chapter with our re-
colonization back in 2002, graduated
with a Psychology degree from MU in
2006 and then returned for my graduate
work in Public Health in 2009. Ive also
served in the Army National Guard
since January of 2000, deployed to Iraq
in 2003, and was activated to command
a Military Police unit on deployment
to Afghanistan in early 2009. I just
recently accepted a position as an Intel
Analyst with our state HQ, so I will
be listening to everyones phone calls
and reading all of your email in the
near future, looking forward to your
feedback. While Im originally from
the heart of Cardinal Nation (fellow
STLers, to answer your next question,
Oakville HS, c/o 98) and have lived in
Columbia since 2001. Currently, Im a
Loan Offcer at Veterans United Home
Loans here in Columbia, working with
our nations Veterans to utilize their VA
loan beneft to purchase homes across
the nation.
In my brief time as High Pi Ive
already seen a glimpse of what this
current group of Active Members
are capable of, winning Greek
Week this past spring and achieving
campus-wide recognition for GPA
during the same semester. Its my
goal to help them maintain this
level of distinction, and Ive seen
them continue to set the bar high
for themselves with everything
theyve set out to do in the coming
months. Ive also begun to receive
a great deal of information from our
International HQ in Indianapolis, as
well as from another GK alum who
is now a Master Steward for Lambda
Chi Alpha, our own Neil Stanglein.
Between these two resources Ive
already learned a great deal about the
ways we can help maintain and grow
this Chapter beyond its already
stellar position here at Mizzou,
and hope to start rolling out some
programs to assist with those goals
in the very near future. This will
hopefully include the revival of the
Alumni Advisory Board, as well as
visits from our own regional Master
Steward, soon to be assigned by our
International Headquarters.
Im looking forward to working
with everyone to help maintain the
standard of excellence weve come
to expect from our Zeta, and Id be
happy to hear from anyone interested
in taking a more active role with
the Chapter, as good Advisors and
Volunteers are always welcome!

To all alumni brothers of the Gamma-Kappa Zeta:
In the nearly 90 years that the Gamma-Kappa Zeta has been affliated with Lambda Chi Alpha,
more than 1700 men have experienced the initiation ritual, developed bonds of brotherhood and
had innumerable growing experiences as college students. Weve worked hard and had fun. Weve
held leadership positions at the university and put on philanthropy events. Attended Mizzou
sporting events and hosted socials.
These shared experiences are what tie us together as brothers. Every year, a new class of young
men joins the chapter to experience all of these things just like the alumni that preceded them.
When you get to meet the undergraduate who holds the same offce you did, or to talk to an
undergrad about your experiences during initiation week these are the types of mutually
enjoyable experiences that alumni and newer members can share and that help forge those
brotherly bonds across generations of Lambda Chis.
All of us have made a lifetime commitment to the organization in order to help the newer
members have those shared experiences, to develop more leadership skills, to make important
career and educational connections, and to gain insight into how to live their lives by moral and just
principles. That sense of stewardship is what keeps a healthy organization going on for decades.
As the chapter moves past its centennial and into its second century, now is the perfect time to
seize the moment and renew your commitment to help the organization grow and fourish. Mizzou
is changing in new and exciting ways, and the chapter has many opportunitities to build and
develop with it. Our alumni can help that process in a variety of ways.
On the following pages, youll fnd a list of suggestions of ways to engage with the chapter in new
ways. Its by no means exhaustive we welcome any alumnus who wants to help in any way. But
the suggestions are also listed along with the appropriate person to contact if youre interested in
taking something on.
We encourage you to take a look and do what you can. The list includes a diverse group of
activities that range from just keeping your contact information up-to-date to sponsoring activites
or helping pay for capital improvements. They are all ways you can uphold your ritualistic duty to
advance the chapter and foster the principles and goals that have kept Gamma-Kappa Zeta going
for 100 years.
Thank you for your consideration, and please dont hesitate to contact the Gamma-Kappa Alumni
Association with any questions or concerns.
