2013-2014 Academic Year Recruitment Frequently Asked Questions- The Entrance Exam & Selection Process

How are students chosen for the programs? 1. Registration Applicants will register at the front table with the program they are applying for (MHEP, WH, EIP) and at this time be asked to hand in the official completed application with reference form attached. 2. English Exam Applicants for all programs will then be asked take a standard English exam testing their Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Writing ability. The entire exam takes approximately 70 minutes. Applicants will need to write a short persuasive essay based on a topic given. It will not help you to memorize a sample essay. It will help you to think about the topic carefully and come up with logical arguments that have good reasoning and are presented in an organized way. Exams will be immediately graded on site and students with qualifying scores will be asked to move on to the next stage. 3. Additional Exams (Here, it differs for each school. )

For MHEP, you will need to sit for a Social Studies, Maths, and Science Exam. This exam tests both the applicants knowledge of the content of these subjects and also their ability to think critically and analytically. For WH, you will need to take a short multiple choice/fill-in exam based on your computer knowledge. This exam is used primarily for the computer teacher so that s/he knows the computer level of students before entering the class. We want everyone to have a basic level of computers, so if you score very low on the computer exam, but very high on everything else, then we will ask you to practice regularly on the computer to improve before coming to WH. For EIP, there is no additional exam. 4. On Site Interviews Qualifying students from stages 1&2 will also be asked to sit for a 5-10 minute interview with a member of our management or academic staff. This interview aims to determine the students English communication ab ility, their family & education background, work and volunteer experience, a demonstrated commitment to creating positive change in Burma, and also their ability to think creatively. 5. Phone Interviews Following the completion of testing in all camp and migrant locations, those with the strongest exam and interview scores will be shortlisted and contacted for an additional phone interview. For WH, phone calls will be made to your current organization to verify your work history. 6. Selection & Notification Based on all of this, 24 students will be notified of their acceptance for each program. If students decline their spot, we will choose from our waiting lists. All programs will notify students of their acceptance by May 15th, 2013 at the latest. If you do not hear anything by May 15th it means you have unfortunately not been chosen, and you will need to wait to apply again next year, or join another program or job.
