FOAMULAR ROOFING SYSTEMS

FOR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS

FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene is a rigid foam insulation which meets the needs of todays design professionals for a truly sustainable insulation product. What Makes FOAMULAR Extruded Polystyrene Sustainable? Sustainability has many definitions in the design community, but in simple terms its all about how the construction, use and maintenance of buildings impacts the use of resources over the long-term life of the building. FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene is a highly effective insulation. The energy used in making insulation products is typically saved in reduced energy usage in the first year of building occupancy. And FOAMULAR roof insulation has a long-term stable insulation value warranted for up to 30 years. FOAMULAR roof insulation is highly moisture and mold resistant. This resistance to moisture, combined with excellent compressive strength and dimensional stability, makes FOAMULAR roof insulation re-usable. Building owners can be confident that in choosing FOAMULAR roof insulation, they will not need to replace the insulation when the roofing membrane needs replacement. FOAMULAR roof insulation is made with a high percentage of post-industrial recycled material and has been certified by Scientific Certification Systems. FOAMULAR roof insulation is also recyclable, although its reusability will typically make recycling unnecessary. FOAMULAR roof insulation can help contribute to credits under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program of the U.S. Green Building Council in the following categories: Energy and Atmosphere (various credits), Materials and Resources (Resource Re-use, Recycled Content, Local Regional Materials) and Innovation & Design Process. The Right Product for Commercial Jobs FOAMULAR comes in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and compressive strengths to meet the demands of almost every application. Suited for a wide range of applications, FOAMULAR is ideal for roofing applications including single-ply, tapered and membrane systems.

THERMAPINK insulation offers superior long-term thermal properties compared to polyisocyanurate foam products and provides excellent efficiencies during installation because it can be placed directly on a non-fire-resistance-rated steel roof deck without the need for a thermal barrier board. THERMAPINK insulation is preliminarily attached to the steel deck using a minimum of four mechanical fasteners per 4' x 8' board. It is designed for direct to steel roof deck applications and eliminates the need for a thermal barrier board. DURAPINK roofing recovery board saves the trouble and expense of removing the old roof, and adds insulation and moisture protection to the new one. It also resists the damaging effects of moisture to prevent rotting or decaying. DURAPINK PLUS roofing recovery board offers the same benefits, and is specifically designed for use with white or light-colored reinforced polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes. Easy to Use Easy to handle and to install, FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene insulation is lightweight and durable. Its also impact-resistant, which helps reduce damage and unnecessary cost on the job. In addition, this foam insulation can be easily scored and fabricated with common hand tools. Long Term Thermal Resistance Owens Corning extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulations have a closed cellular structure and are filled with a blowing agent, HCFC 142b, specifically selected for its low thermal conductivity to enhance the thermal performance of the foam. However, over a long period of time (50 to 75 years), the blowing agent diffuses through the thickness of the foam, and air diffuses into these same closed cellular volumes. Because of this gas movement, the overall thermal resistance (R-value) of the insulation product changes over time. This phenomenon is typically called aging.

Both the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) have recognized the foam-aging phenomenon. Each standards-setting organization has attempted to address the foam aging issue by developing test methods, which accelerate the aging process by thin slicing the foam. The ASTM thin slicing method is ASTM C1303 Standard Test Method for Estimating the Long Term Change in the Thermal Resistance of Unfaced Rigid Closed Cell Plastic Foams by Slicing and Scaling Under Controlled Laboratory Conditions. The Canadian ULC thin slicing methodology is CAN/ULC S770 Standard for Determination of Long Term Thermal Resistance of Closed Cell Thermal Insulating Foams, which is based on ASTM C1303.Thin slicing accelerates the diffusion of the blowing agent gases through the foam by reducing the foam product thickness. Fundamentally, ASTM C1303 and ULC S770 use the thin slicing approach to accelerate the aging of the foam. There is currently some variance in the results produced by using either ASTM 1303 or ULC S770, and that variance is currently under debate within the foam insulation industry. The isocyanurate insulation manufacturers have adopted ULC S770 as their standard and are publishing Long Term Thermal Resistance values based on this testing method. FOAMULAR roof insulation has been tested using ULC S770 and the results are contained in this document so that comparisons can be made with the published performance of isocyanurate roof insulation.

PRODUCT DATA

FEATURES & BENEFITS

FOAMULAR insulation is an extruded polystyrene rigid foam insulation. A wide variety of standard sizes, thicknesses and compressive strengths meet the requirements of nearly every application. Compressive strengths range from an economical 15psithe worlds lowest density extruded polystyrene insulationto 100psi. Ideal for roofing applications including single-ply, tapered, BUR and protected membrane systems. Thermal performance is better than for other commonly used insulating products with a long-term, aged thermal resistance (R-value*) of 5.0 per 1" of thickness at 75F mean temperature. FOAMULAR insulation is easy to handle and install. Extruded polystyrene insulation is lightweight, durable and impact resistant which helps to reduce job site damage. Foam insulation can be scored and fabricated easily with common hand tools. Hydrophobic properties minimize wicking and contribute to superior dimensional stability under moist conditions. Resists ground water, condensation, water leakage and freeze/thaw cycling, and is also resistant to the effects of fungus, mildew, corrosion and common soil acids. Moisture resistance helps to maintain thermal performance over the life of the product. Panels are available with square edge, shiplaps or tongue-and-groove edge to further reduce air infiltration.

STANDARDS AND CODE COMPLIANCE

Thermal Resistance: 5.0 at 75F, 5.4 at 40F mean temperature at 1" thickness (hr x ft2 x F/Btu) Recognized by code authorities under Research Reports BOCA 96-24; ICBO 3628; SBCCI PST and ESI 9727A Meets HUD/FHA Use of Materials Bulletin No. UM71a, ASTM C 578 and AASHTO M230 Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., See Classification Certification U-197

ARCHITECTURAL NOTES
Caution: Combustible. Although it does contain a flame-retardant additive to inhibit ignition from small fire sources, FOAMULAR insulation will ignite if exposed to fire of sufficient heat and intensity. Do not expose the product to open flame during shipping, storage, installation or use. In most applications, a code-compliant thermal barrier must be used to separate FOAMULAR insulation from the building interior. THERMAPINK roof insulation is approved for installation directly over steel roof deck without a thermal barrier. Note: Because roofing systems vary regarding thermal barrier requirements, check with your local Owens Corning Sales Representative and local code requirements. FOAMULAR insulation is not recommended where sustained temperatures exceed 165F. Do not use it in contact with surfaces such as pipes or chimneys that have temperatures over 150F. Many solvent-laden mastics and some plasticor oil-based adhesives are not compatible with polystyrene-based insulations. Take provisions to protect the insulation from excessive exposure to direct sunlight by covering it as soon as possible. Evaluate all constructions to assess the necessity for providing vapor retarders to avoid condensation and subsequent structural damage. (See the current ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.)

*R-values differ. Find out why in the sellers fact sheet on R-values. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power.

FOAMULAR EXTRUDED POLYSTYRENE FOAM INSULATION

TAPERED ROOFING SYSTEMS PRODUCT DATA

FEATURES & BENEFITS

FOAMULAR THERMAPINK 25 insulation, with a 25 psi minimum compressive strength, is extruded to a tapered configuration, not cut after the extrusion process. Greater performance characteristics, including increased dimensional stability that avoids the costly problem of bowed boards. FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene insulation is produced with Owens Corning patented HYDROVAC process technology. This technology results in a tight, closed-cell structure with extremely high resistance to moisture. This property is vital when selecting roof insulation because moisture penetration can severely degrade the thermal efficiency of insulation materials.

FOAMULAR insulation is virtually unaffected by moisture and will never rot or decay. FOAMULAR insulation is lightweight, yet tough, for ease of handling. And each panel is clearly marked for accurate installation. FOAMULAR THERMAPINK insulation can be applied directly over a steel deck without the need for a thermal barrier.

REROOF SINGLE-PLY/STEEL DECK

Product Options DURAPINK RECOVER INSULATION Installation & Design Considerations DURAPINK insulation is not for use in new construction or total tear off. Also, DURAPINK insulation is not for use as a coverboard directly over other insulation. Installing DURAPINK insulation over newer coal tar pitch requires applying an impervious separator between the insulation and the coal tar. It is permissible to install DURAPINK insulation over coal tar pitch that is at least ten years old and has not been resaturated in the last four years. Do not apply DURAPINK insulation over an existing roof with 3" or more of existing insulation, or an R-value* of greater than R-17. Mechanically fasten DURAPINK insulation directly over the existing roof. Apply only one layer of DURAPINK insulation. See Owens Corning specifications for fastening pattern. Apply roof membrane directly over DURAPINK insulation using mechanical fasteners specified by the membrane manufacturer. single-ply membrane mechanically attached slip sheet (if membrane is PVC)

Normal thermal expansion will occur when darkcolored membranes are installed over DURAPINK insulation. Refer to the product properties. PVC membranes require a slip sheet between the insulation and membrane, or use DURAPINK PLUS. DURAPINK insulation installation must comply with Owens Corning Specifications. For details, contact Owens Corning.

Perforate existing vapor retarders as described in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals, and verify that existing roof deck and roof coverings are suitable for recovering. See Factory Mutual or Underwriters Laboratories reroofing system listings for complete details.

*R-values differ. Find out why in the sellers fact sheet on R-values. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power.
