of dirt a dramatic transformation takes place. As snowflakes turn into
raindrops, a single stem silently emerges from the soil and is exposed into

as its petals open and expose themselves to the warmth of spring.
Sixty-five years ago, this simple tulip made an impression upon the citizens
of Albany who have since celebrated the flowers arrival each spring. Tulip

crowd of cameras, the strumming of strings, and the fragrance
of fresh lemonade and fried dough. Its a sensory experience that
may sound overwhelming, but like the many tulips that stand
side by side for acres, when all together, blend into a beautiful
and harmonious celebration of springtime.
It was Mayor Erastus Cornings request to Queen Wilhelmina
of the Netherlands in 1948 that began this citywide tradition. In
response to his appeal for an official variety of tulip to be named
for Albany, she wrote: Her Majesty gladly accepts the invitation
to designate a tulip as the official flower of Albany. The Orange
Wonder was chosen, fitting with the colors of our city flag:
orange, white, and blue. Following this royal transatlantic cable,
the tulip (now Tulip) became the official flower of Albany as
declared by a city ordinance.
As with anything Albany, the festival is deeply rooted in our
heritage. Each year begins with the Scrubbing of State Street,
in which students clad in Hollanders attire (dont forget the
wooden clogs) follow the Dutch tradition of washing the streets
in preparation of a celebration. Saturday marks the coronation
of the Tulip Queen and her Court, as they begin their year-long
positions as community ambassadors to the City. The following
day, Mothers Day, is when one deserving mom will be named
Mother of the Year.
With the help of many volunteers, city workers, and a dedicated
community, Tulip Fest has grown into the showpiece of Albanys
annual events scene, much like the unassuming tulip bulb
becomes a powerful and peaceful reminder of Albanys history,
beauty, and bright future.

hen you step into
Jacks Oyster House
from State Street you
will feel time shift as you
stand on the bridge between
Albanys storied history and
bustling present. The dining
room is adorned with handsome
woodwork, black and white tiles,
large photos of old Albany, and
deep private booths that are perfect
for important conversation. Jacks
is the kind of place where things
happen: deals are made, legislation
is negotiated, elbows are rubbed, and
probably more than a few romances
are ignited. Theres a good chance youll
see one (or many) of New York States
politicians seated across Jacks dining
room, down from the Capitol for dinner
with colleagues.
Jack Rosenstein opened the original Jacks
Oyster House in 1913. According to an article
by William Kennedy in a 1985 issue of Esquire,
Jack didnt like oysters, but nonetheless as a
young boy he became one of the best oyster
shuckers in Albany. That skill started him down
the path that carried him through Albanys great
restaurants, and into ownership of his own Oyster
House. Stories about Jack always mention the thing
that defined him and still defines the restaurant he
founded: he did things right.
Since 1913, the Rosenstein family has operated Jacks:
the original restaurant was opened by Jack himself, and
is now run by his grandson, Brad. It is clear from the preparation
of the food, the attention to detail, and the recent seamless
additions to the space that the restaurant is treated as a beloved
member of the family - and so are Jacks patrons.
From the moment you enter Jacks Oyster House and are
greeted warmly (often by Brad himself), you will feel like royalty.
The feeling is mutual: generations of Albany residents have
considered Jacks a member of their family: a place to return
again and again, where milestones were celebrated and meals
savored.
The food at Jacks, of course, is as outstanding as the service.
Each component of each meal is prepared with care: fresh,
unique, and delicious. Whether you choose one of Jacks
signature oyster dishes, filet mignon, or crab cakes, your meal
at Jacks will be memorable and likely to inspire you to plan your
next visit even before you leave.
As Jacks celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, the tradition
of above-and-beyond service continues, along with its custom of
serving seven-days a week, all year long. It has closed for just one
day: in 1987, the day of Jack Rosensteins funeral.
Settle into a booth at Jacks. Order a martini. Leave your phone
in your pocket, and imagine youre in another, slower, time. Take
pleasure in each heavenly bite of your meal. Have a civil political
debate with your dining partner. Sip your beverage. Celebrate.
Notice the lighting and the silverware. For just a few hours, let
Jacks take you back in time.

here are just a few basic ingredients necessary for the quintessential
summer evening in Albany:
A worn blanket (best if it smells like sunblock or campfire)
A picnic basket of sandwiches from Debbies Kitchen, burritos from
Bombers, or cookies and cakes from Crisan.
A spot on the lawn looking down on the Park Playhouse stage in
Washington Park while the areas top actors and actresses belt out
show tunes from beloved musicals, their voices echoing across the
pond, over Lark Street, and across the Empire State Plaza.
If possible, a glowing sunset followed by a clear starry sky.
Evenings like this make up 25 years of summer memories for Albany residents
and visitors. Many grew up watching musicals in the park, where a love of show
tunes or singing or lighting design was sparked. Some seized a rare opportunity
to see live theater, returning night after night to watch the stage from different
angles, noticing something new every time.
In the summer of 2013, Park Playhouse celebrates 25 years of providing free
entertainment for residents and visitors in Albany. This world class theater and
the opportunities it affords its cast, crew, and audience are a treasure to the city.
Owen Smith is Park Playhouses Producing Artistic Director and is the main
force behind its continued success. Park Playhouses tradition of high quality
free theater is a testament to Owens dedication, the City of Albany, and
supporters of Park Playhouse. For many in the audience each summer, there
are few opportunities to experience live theater, let alone live theater featuring
Actors Equity performers, a live orchestra, beautiful sets, and the areas best
performers.
Live theater has its own kind of magic. The sets, the lights, the costumes, and
the story bring alive a different time and place. Coupled with sunsets and starry
summer nights, the magic is amplified as the audience is transported out of
Washington Park into the streets of New York City, 1960s Baltimore, a German
cabaret, or the Land of Oz.
Park Playhouse also brings the citys youth into the magic of theater through
Park Playhouse II. Shows put on by this arm of the company are done by a cast
and crew who are all under the age of 18. This talented group presents theater
that is no less spectacular, with an energy and excitement that radiates through
the park.
Every summer for the past 25 years, audiences have come to Washington Park
with their blankets and picnic dinners, ready to take in live theater that is among
the regions best. Many audience members walk over from their homes in the
city, others come from many miles around for an evening of showstoppers
nestled among the beautiful trees and hills of Albanys oldest park.
This summer, join the tradition. Find the perfect spot on the lawn (arrive early!)
and relax as the sun sets and the orchestra swells to signal the opening of
another grand Park Playhouse show.

T
he Albany Institute of History and Art is one of nations oldest museums and
as much a part of our citys fabric as the New York State Capitol Building itself.
The Institute, as its so fondly called by locals, has entertained generations of
tourists for over 200 years. It contains a treasure trove of artifacts highlighting
historical and artistic contributions of the Upper Hudson Valley, including one
of the largest collections of Hudson River School paintings in the country.
School children, artists, and the naturally curious have flocked to The Institute to
surround themselves in the museums significant New York State collection, only to
find themselves in a small, solemn, dimly lit room that commands respect. Within
this room are The Institutes Egyptian Mummies. How does a museum, dedicated
to the preservation of Hudson Valley cultural contributions, end up with Mummies
from Egypt as part of their extensive collection?
The mummies were welcomed to Albany, NY over 100 years ago a drop in the
proverbial bucket for 2,000 year old mummies. Institute board member, Samuel
W. Brown, traveled to Cairo, Egypt in 1909 and returned with two mummies. One
mummy was fully wrapped in linen, as is traditionally pictured. The other mummy
was partially exposed, with a preserved face visible to onlookers. In the 19th and
early 20th century, ancient Egypt captured our imaginations. Thousands of books,
artifacts and even fashion were heavily influenced at this time by Ancient Egypt. It
seemed only natural that Brown would want to include these historical wonders in
The Institute as a means to draw the curious into the museum. However, technology
was limited and there was little that could be gleaned as to the identities of these
ancient marvels. Who were these mysterious figures from across the sea? Were
their daily lives anything like ours? Their story was left to mystery and imagination.
However, limited though we were, our curiosity had yet to diminish. Eventually,
technology caught up with our inquisitive nature and the world came closer to
understanding the mummies. In 1988, the mummies were sent to Albany Medical
Center, where the preliminary scans shed some light on their identities.
The first mummy the mummy with his face exposed is believed to have died in
966 BCE and was between 55-66 years of age when he passed away. His companion
is supposed to have been between 35-45 years old at the time of his passing. This
mummy is significant to archeologists and historians because the X-Rays revealed
a ceramic toe on the foot. Egyptians believed humans needed to be fully intact
before proceeding to the afterlife and it is assumed the toe was added during the
mummification process. The discovery was featured on The Learning Channels
The Ancient ER in 2003.
We continue to want to know more about our ancient brethren. The mummies have
once again been sent to the Albany Medical Center in preparation for this years
new exhibit, GE Presents the Mystery of the Albany Mummies (pg. 7). With updated
imaging equipment and a host of radiologists and Egyptian scholars, we will
continue to learn more about The Institutes Mummies and, undoubtedly, continue
to find more of ourselves in their stories.

T
he Albany Pine Bush is a delicate inland
pine barren ecosystem that exists in
only about twenty other places on earth.
For twenty-five years, the Albany Pine
Bush Preserve Commission has been
working diligently to preserve and protect
this natural resource. Though much of the
original pine bush has been developed, the
remaining land is home to many unique
plants and animals, including twenty rare
species and two natural communities. The
Pine Bush Discovery Center and nature
trails are open to the public, and many
programs are offered throughout the year
for all ages.

his year marks the Bicentennial Celebration of The Albany Academies two schools.
The Albany Academy was chartered in 1813, and Albany Academy for Girls
originally named Albany Female Academywas chartered in 1814, the first girls day
school in the nation.
The Old Albany Academy building, a masterpiece by architect Phillip Hooker, still stands
in Academy Park at the eastern end of Washington Avenue, across from the Capitol of
New York State. Albany Academy for Girls has had five different sites over the centuries,
only the last of which still stands. An early and stately Greek Revival building, on Pearl
Street until 1892, is still revered in the schools song for its classic columns. Both
schools are now located on Academy Road, across the street from each other. The
Albany Academys building was built in 1931 and Albany Academy for Girls in 1959.
The two schools merged in 2007.
Over their two centuries, many illustrious graduates have provided leadership to the
United States: Herman Melville, author of the great American novel, Moby Dick; Jane
Lathrop Stanford, founder and savior of Stanford University; Joseph Henry, renowned
scientist and first Director of the Smithsonian Institution; Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, one
of Americas foremost psychologists; and many others. A recent Academy graduate,
Alydaar Rangwala, one of forty Intel

Science Talent Search

winners in the nation, is

now attending Harvard and follows in this long line of excellence.
The Bicentennial Celebration begins on March 4, 2013 with the renovation of the clock
tower atop The Albany Academy, known for its ancient Fish and Pumpkin. The clock,
one of the finest ever crafted in the United States, will ring again and tell the hours for
the first time in many years. The Bicentennial will conclude in June, 2014 when Albany
Academy for Girls holds its commencement.
Today, in their third century, The Albany Academies stand at the forefront of education
in the Capital Region with students attending from Cobleskill to Chatham, from Saratoga
to Saugerties. The strength of our foundation is the inspiration for the future.

n late October, when the leaves are falling as fast as the temperature, hundreds
of volunteers descend upon Albanys historic Washington Park to begin
installing more than 125 light displays in preparation for Capital Holiday Lights in
the Park. From Thanksgiving through the first week of each New Year, these lights
create a festive winter wonderland in the heart of the city, while the Washington
Park Lake House is transformed into Santas Workshop, complete with handcrafted
gifts, refreshments, and sometimes even a visit from Santa and his reindeer! This
event benefits the juvenile crime prevention programs of the Albany Police Athletic
League (PAL) so be sure not to miss an opportunity to spread some holiday cheer
while helping a worthy local cause.
