Elementary students at the Jeffrey School and Island Avenue School have been following the daily journals of Madison resident Susan Miller as she leads a relief effort in Jacmel, Haiti, about 50 miles below Port-Au-Prince. Miller, a certified nurse-midwife, is working at a newly built women's clinic and birthing center run by the organization Bumi Sehat. Together in the school's computer lab, 4th-grade students in Lisa Caldwell's class at the Jeffrey School are reading Miller's blogs posted on The Source's website www.zip06.com (see video of a class lesson to the right). Caldwell is encouraging the students to think about what life outside of Madison might be like, particularly for the disaster-torn people of Haiti. Students at Island Avenue School have been connecting with the children of Haiti and volunteers like Miller through UNICEF (see there drawings by clicking the blue arrows below the photo above). Last week, students at Island Avenue in Kristen Caramanica's 2ndgrade class spearheaded a school-wide project to bring cheer to Haitian children. Colorful drawings will be forwarded to the children of Haiti. In addition, Caramanica's classroom wrote thank you cards to businesses, individuals, and professionals who have helped rebuild Haiti after its devastating earthquake. The notes will be forwarded with the assistance of UNICEF. When Miller returns from Haiti at the end of March, she'll visit both elementary schools to speak with the students about her work. To follow Miller's online journal see related links to the right.
