Update: Thursday, Nov. 1, 2 p.m. Power Update: CL&P Has a Face in Branford, Hes Known as Kilowatt Affectionately called Kilowatt by town members; CL&Ps town liaison gives you the latest update on Branfords power restoration post Sandy. Most residents should be back online by this weekend. Right now as you read this, one dozen CL&P crews are on the ground working to restore power in Branford afterSandy knock the lights out. Two more crews are working in Guilford to restore power to Branford. The good news, David Ferrante, CL&P Town Liaison said, is that the number of residents without power keeps declining but the number of CL&P crews will not until every resident has power. CL&P estimates 98 percent restoration by Monday or Tuesday but Ferrante said that number is based on specific residences. He anticipates most of the town to be back on the grid by this weekend, possibly as late as Sunday. This morning more places have come back online including the Soundview Family YMCA(open to the public for showers), the Town Transfer Station and the Branford Animal Shelter. The transfer station will be open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for drop off; collection will resume Monday (hours also extended until 5 p.m. every other day until Sunday). Power restoration began from the towns main substation on East Main Street and then outward from there, said Ferrante who has been station at the town Emergency Operation Center since Sunday. CL&P, he said, also works with the town to get power on for critical areas in town like Hospice, which was evacuated Monday. All Hospice evacuees were brought back today when power was restored. Other critical facilities in town are the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the schools those Ferrante was hopeful, would be back on the grid today. CL&P has been averaging about 25 percent restoration since the storm began, said Ferrante but as of 2 p.m. today, they were still at 37 percent about 10 percent less than where they started this morning. Branford Patch Facebook reader wrote in this afternoon saying that she felt no power has been restored overnight. It looks to me as though hardly anything happened between your post 15 hours ago and now. Ferrante said crews are working as quickly as they can and he expects more people to be coming back online by the end of the day today. Patch sat with Ferrante as he used his computer to show us in real time where crews were actively working. Using GPS trackers on every CL&P truck (or contractors truck) Ferrante explained how crews were getting restoration done. Branfords main substation on East Main Street feeds substations on Meadow Street and on Pine Orchard Road. From those auxiliary substations, the outlying areas get power. The good news was that the East Main Street substation survived the storm unaffected. It sits next to the Branford River so there was some concern that it might not make it through without flooding. The contingency plan was to patch in power overhead from Guilford, Ferrante said. Thank God we didnt have to do that. Also this morning a resident asked why CL&P has only recently activated their full restoration mode? Ferrante said full restoration means that all crews are devoted to restoration rather than doing preparation, hazard management or damage assessment. A CL&P crew arrived in Branford Sunday night said Ferrante and began preparation work with Branford Public Works. Just after the storm, CL&P crews in conjunction with PWD, began clearing roadways and hazards securing downed trees and wires and making roads passable for emergency vehicles. In total, CL&P and PWD assessed more than 60 trees down with wires since Sandy struck. Since yesterday, most CL&P crews have been completely devoted to restoration. Compared to Irene Ferrante said, CL&P actually got our resources here much sooner. They also worked much more efficiently with PWD this time, he said, making restoration that much quicker. Using many new online tools to track restoration, Ferrante said the handling of Sandy has been much better than it was for Irene. I didnt even have a computer that was working, last year, he said. Averaging 25 percent restoration every day since the storm knocked out 87 percent of Branfords power, Ferrante said hes hopeful that near-full restoration will be sooner rather than later. People think its going to be days and days and I dont see that happening, he said.

Update: Wednesday, Oct. 31 6 p.m. We're so happy to report that those with power in Branford after Sandy are in the majority for the first time since the storm struck this past Monday. CL&P is reporting that 51 percet of customers are back on the grid as of Oct. 31 at 6 p.m.; 49 percent are still in the dark. We hope to be bringing you more good news again soon!
Are your lights on? We want to know so we can update this map with your good news too!
________________________________________________________________________________________ For Hurricane Sandy updates, check out Branford Patch Facebook and Twitter and on our Topic Page. ___________________________________________________________________________________
Original Story, Wednesday, Oct. 31 1:30 p.m. While about 75 percent of Branford is still in the dark, residents should be happy to know that CL&P is working to get us back on the grid following Sandy. Branford Police Captain Geoffrey Morgan said Wednesday afternoon that power company is working on the main trunks that run through town and then working out into the neighborhoods around them. There are 16,294 CL&P customers in Branford 12,386 are still without power as of 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31. From reader comments on our Facebook page, it looks like parts of East Main Street and West Main Street are back on the grid. A reader on Facebook asked us for a detailed map of who has power in town (see green flags). Please let us know as power comes back on in your neighborhood so we can update the map above. Morgan said Shore Drive will also be on soon as they look to restore power for patients of Hospice they had to be evacuated during the storm. Power will also be restored in parts of Indian Neck soon as CL&P looks to get the wastewater treatment plant back online. At this time the drinking water is safe, though sewage has spilled into the beach waters; swimming is not advised, according to the East Shore District Health Department. ________________________________________________________________________________________ For Hurricane Sandy updates, check out Branford Patch Facebook and Twitter and on our Topic Page. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Morgan said they are hoping to get the main arteries back open so places like the Soundview Family YMCA can open with showers for residents. Right now Planet Fitness has offered showers for the public bring your own towel. The two town shelters at Mary T. Murphy School and Branford High School are now closed; the new shelter is open at Branford Community House, which is running on a generator. Pets are welcome at this shelter. Meals-Ready to-Eat (MREs) are available for residents at the shelter. The shelters were moved from the schools, Morgan said, as the facilities ready for infrastructure testing as they come back online. Schools are closed through Thursday, Nov. 1. Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez said this morning that he will base the re-opening of school on a dayby-day basis. Alex Palluzzi, head of the Branford Recreation Department said the generators normally used for the soccer and football fields are being used a facilities around town. Today they were hoping to get a generator to the Registrar of Voters located in the BCTV building on Kirkham Avenue in anticipation of Tuesdays presidential election. Patch has called the registra but has not confirmed any information regarding voting and how the power outage may affect the election.
Please let us know in the comments when the lights come back on in your neighborhood. Heres to hoping your street is next!

Howard Ave is a mess. Several utility poles are broken (and some are leaning and will take down several more if/when they fall) and wires, and lots of debris from the trees that once laid across the road. One transformer is on the ground and another one has leaked PCBs all over the ground. The insulator with a torn main power line wire from one pole hangs over my driveway and can be reached by anyone taller than 4 feet. To get power to this neighborhood, new utility poles need to be replaced, new wires replaced, 2 new transformers, etc. And, there is no way a fire truck can get through the lower Howard Ave end. Everyone is fine and homes are fine, we are thankful. We know this means a lot of work, but not sure the utility company knows about this road.

Cl&p is pretending my power is restored, it is NOT! 15 buildings still out up here, however everyone around us does in fact have power! The greens, Jefferson woods, thimbles island, briarwood, stonegate, alps, burban, west main and parts of orchard hill rd all have power

Same thing on Greenfield Ave and Avon Road (off Cherry Hill Road). Only a few houses are NOT back on - the rest of the streets are all lit and there are no CL&P trucks in sight in this area. I'm worried about my elderly mother with no heat and lights for another night.

There is NO POWER ON in Jefferson Woods. I don't know where people (CL&P)are getting this info from but it is totally inaccurate. Common people be fair, give people the truth don't blow smoke at them! It's not right! Everyone is waiting for acurate info from CL&P at least give us that!

Ginny Cubrow - I am truly sorry & sense your frustration but quite a few complexs' around & off Jefferson Road & top of the hill near Honda DO NOT have power! These statements are false. We all want power, but a lot more people still need to be fixed PLEASE NO FALSE information out there! Last thing we need ! Let's all work together.

I would like to back up Baileygirl's statement. Jefferson Woods, The Greens, and many of the surrounding homes and condos DO NOT currently have power. These are 2 of the largest complexes in town and the area is one of the most heavily populated. There are no down wires that I can see in the immediate area. Also, I have not seen one single CL&P truck in this area since the storm ended on Tues. I would prefer if CL&P would not brag next time about all the extra crews they brought in from out of state for this storm if they are not gonna focus on the most hardest hit areas and most populated areas. Also it would be nice if CL&P could give a better estimate of when the town would be whole again with power. It would seem that it would make sense to help the areas with higher population.

OH but the businesses are all set on Route 1 aren't they? I am in total agreement with your statement. This is ridiculous. It seems they are going up and down doing what's visible, when they could come in and get all the condos and surrounding homes up in one swoop-that's what they did with Irene... Hey everyone, Thanks for sharing the info from your neighborhoods. I have a huge tree and utility pole hung up at the end of my road on Damascus, which leads me to believe power might take a bit to get back on for me... or maybe that means they will fix it sooner? Laura, I will let the FD know today when I stop by that you are concerned about Howard Avenue. Perhaps that might speed things or up or at lease shed some light on that area sounds really dangerous. I will also ask the FD and the PD to take a look at this entire list to make sure they are aware of the trouble areas though I suspect they have a pulse on it. I just want to ask anyone who has an elderly neighbor without power to check on him or her. It was pretty cold when we woke up this morning... Thanks and I'll be updating you soon as I have new info; and I'll be updating this map now. --nicole ball

I don't have it on Orchard hill, near Florence, but it looks like the houses nearer rt 1 have it. Yesterday they said I got it back-I think they were lying. What gives-during Irene we were all on that same circuit Branford Hills included! Now we are in the dark. My husband said that part of Branford Hills did have power.. And they don't bother to give us any estimate, other than generality..and I haven't seen a darn truck in site either

I just spoke to a nice lady at CLP.. here's the info I got from her. There are 110 line crews/66 tree crews/764 trouble spots and 38,000 affected. This is for towns served by "Madison"..which means Branford, Guilford, Madison, Killingworth and Clinton. Take it for what it's worth..at the least its more than substantial restoration.

As of this morning, MOST of Branford Hills is still in the dark. Some of the businesses at the bottom of the hill had power, but not many. Even McDonald's is still out! I am happy that the businesses are back, since we can at least get supplies. I just wish we had more info on the progress in town. Remembering Irene, Branford Hills was out for seven days, so I expect we will be among the last to get it back again. I am concerned, especially since with the condo communities, so MANY people are affected. We are lucky in other ways, though. Good news! - I saw 2 power trucks (not CL&P's) down by Lake Saltonstall setting up to work. So maybe . . . Maryann Amore

If you are without power do not assume CL&P knows. Do not assume someone else called it in. If you experience an outage, call CL&P at 1-800286-2000 or visit http://www.cl-p.com/StormCenter/ for more information. You can also report your location online. Power is being restored on state roads and moving inward to off-streets. These main roads hold the transformers that supply power to side streets. If you regained power and lost it again, CALL and report it.

CL&P is is structurally an organizational nightmare. Made up of complete bureaucracy, red tape, and people at the top echelon just passing on blame or "what to do next" to other's at the top. I know people that work for both CL&P and UI it's a complete 100% different opinion from one to the other. They have a lot of jokes about lawyers , but I have been starting to hear some about cl&p. I mean if you actually added up the hours these guys have spent at diners since early Monday. People would be astonished. I seen the same group of cl&p workers at the same diner for 3 days in a row and any time they show they stay for minimum 2 hours no matter time of day. It's our dime, watch in 1Q, Bill Quinlan, " We need to increase our rate again!" These guys should be working 16 hour days, that's just 1 shift. Yet for 6 of those hours at least time is wasted doing god knows what. They fail at being efficient. So what they have a liasion, people that know anything about this type of work and how it works knows it's boots on the ground with the efficient management pointing them what to do because believe me utility guys an line guys are dumb as a tree and they are constantly calling their bosses for help. And I'm talking after they already were told and what and how to do it. That's why I left and headed for the casinos. See ya next week Branford.

Yes, most likely if that happen they had to shut power to fix something that will power on more people people when they hit the switch on the remote link. It could be the following; stringing up wires on new poles, installing/fixing transformers (grey boxes near top of poles, or perhaps they made a mistake and something went "Pow pow". They said substations had do damage. If it's not that it's one of what I said in someway.

Still no power upper Orchard hill, branford hills condos (partial) Orchard Heights, and Florence Rd to Alps. I've been trying to get some info out of CLP and mostly I've gotten reasonable reps. but early this morning I called again to check on my status and find the troublespot numbers,as I've done before, The CSR that took my call was rude, condescending and lecturing. I've been told twice my power was on, to only find it was a lie, and this morning the rep told me that I knew a storm was coming, I should have made other arrangements. Are you kidding me. What other arrangements, perhaps know the lotto numbers so I could win and get the heck out of this state before it hit? I just wanted information. Im not stupid, but at this point, as the numbers go down, they should be able to give those of us who are unlucky better information than generalizations. With all the crowing that CLP was better prepared that was a lie. Their communication is severely lacking and has gone backwards from Irene. Everyone around me has lights, no wires/trees, and I can't get anyone to listen. the 5 dunkin donuts in town were open first, while residents sat in the dark. Business lobbied huh? This is ridiculous. Cl&P needs to answer for this. They are a monopoly that is holding us hostage-this is totally unfair and uncaring.

power came on last night (saturday nov 3) a few minutes before 8pm - we're near the entrance to stony creek - very happy and grateful to crews working long shifts in the cold, windy dark to make it happen - do some people actually think that crews come to a street, reattach a downed wire, flip a switch and the lights come on? my understanding is that services (businesses, medical facilities, shelters, etc) get power back ASAP, if you live in those grids then you are indeed fortunate - being without power for nearly a week was a test in endurance, but my thoughts are with those elsewhere who are suffering extensive damage & losses and much longer outages... six days without lights, internet, TV, hot water, refrigeration, etc. was interesting and frustrating, i hope everyone gets power back very soon! oh, and thanks to Patch for the updates, i was able to keep up with things using my lone working device, a cell phone!
