It has been an honor to have served this past year as the President of Augusta Preps Board of Trustees. As a Prep Pillar, I also have been pleased to see advancements made and needs met thanks to your gifts to the Annual Fund. This past year has been filled with excitement as we have again witnessed our students excel toward greatness, living out Preps mission statement that embodies a message of diversity and character in a collegepreparatory, non-sectarian setting. At Augusta Prep, students are indeed taught how to think, not what to think. Such critical thinking skills are an essential ingredient to success in the business world, and I am impressed daily with how well the faculty of Augusta Prep prepare their students for excellence in so many ways. In addition to the superb faculty and students at Augusta Prep, we are continually appreciative to the individual donor and volunteer support that is so fundamental to Preps success. Your support truly fosters a family atmosphere that the Prep community is known for. This past fall, that cohesive nature was on full display as we collectively celebrated as one our first night football and soccer games with the new lighting in place at our

athletic field. We now have another opportunity this school year to further the bond as we celebrate a new Cavalier Stadium! I look forward to seeing you all on campus and out at the new stadium. I thank you again for your continued financial support and for all the ways in which you contribute to Augusta Prep. With Gratitude,

Upholding Preps Tradition of Excellence Through Four Pillars

eing a Prep Pillar is all about upholding Augusta Preps tradition of excellence, and in the 2012-2013 school year you our Prep community responded in a big way in giving to our Annual Fund. Your gift made funds possible for technology upgrades as well as campus beautification efforts and faculty and staff professional development. Upon such support, we were focused on four foundational pillars this past school year that of Academics/Technology, the Arts, Athletics, and Community Involvement. Throughout this years

Annual Report youll see the ways in which we prepared for excellence in the 2012-2013 school year in those four areas. We hope this fills you with a sense of pride, and we hope youll continue your commitment to Augusta Prep and Be a Prep Pillar. A few quick highlights from our four pillars can be seen with the following photos and accompanying numbers. A more in-depth view of each pillar of focus is offered throughout this annual report.

2012-2013 Prep Pillars

It is with great privilege and gratitude that we announce and celebrate with you the outstanding success of the 20122013 Annual Fund. The following is a list of donors who gave to Augusta Prep and became Prep Pillars, upholding our tradition to Prepare for Excellence. This report includes gifts received during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012 and ending June 30, 2013. Every effort has been made to ensure information is correct. In the preparation of such reports, however, errors occasionally occur despite our best efforts. If you have questions, please contact Director of Development Pam Weinberger at (706) 863-1906, ext. 203 or pam.weinberger@augustaprep.org.

Augusta Preps Middle School was heavily involved this year in the Great American Can Roundup. Despite a theft of many pounds of cans from an off-campus site that set the drive back, school and community members rallied to renew the student collection back to a total of 1,763 pounds of aluminum, giving Augusta Prep a first place finish in the Roundups state contest.

Arts

Augusta Prep held an Evening with the Arts event on April 26 that featured the artistic talents of Prep students, raising nearly $4,500 for the schools Fine Arts Department. In addition to student artwork on display, the event also featured a Prep Idol contest.

$2.5 million of academic, talent, and athletic scholarships offered. The graduating class also earned a math mean score of 615 on the SAT and a mean score of 611 on the critical reading section of the SAT. In other scholarly achievements, Augusta Preps students placed second in team and individual competition at the 25th Annual Georgia Southern Invitational Mathematics Tournament, held in March. The schools varsity team - comprised of Drew Chamberlain, Sarah Scott, Jacob Burr, and John Swierczynski received a second place showing in the Division III competition. Meanwhile, Chamberlain also took second in the individual contest for the same division. Also, Augusta Prep Upper School student Nick Friedman was named a finalist for the 2013 Georgia Governors Honors Program. Friedman was named so in the area of Mathematics. According to the programs website, the GHP is a summer residential instructional program (four weeks in 2013) designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Middle School students again held their 6th Annual Invention Convention, and the 5th grade offered its annual Science Carnival. Meanwhile, the Lower Schools 100 and 200 Book Clubs continued with much success. Through the years, more than 1,300 students have joined the 100 and 200 Book Clubs at Augusta Prep. A student reads 1,000 pages multiplied by his or her grade level to join the 100 Book Club. If a student reaches the goal for a second time, that student then joins the 200 Book Club. In the way of technology, there were several new additions and improvements made on the campus of Augusta Prep, all aimed at improving the learning experience for students. A major addition at the start of the 2012-2013 school year was with two 70-inch monitors that were installed for distance learning opportunities along with

a camera that points toward class participants, microphones that hang from the classrooms ceiling, and a touch-screen remote. That equipment is getting its first inclass use for the 2013-14 school year as certain specialty classes are offered along with other Malone Scholars schools throughout the nation, all connecting through the distance learning video conferencing equipment. In 2008, Augusta Prep was selected as a Malone Scholars school, making it today one of only 50 schools in the country and the only school in Georgia with such a designation. At the start of this past school year, the Lower School also received a new iMac lab for students, featuring 22 iMac computers. Students love the new addition in technology. The

Hull Fine Arts Center likewise saw the addition of a new projector for presentations on the big screen, and this past summer, workers were on campus installing wireless access that will aid students and teachers in the use of all forms of mobile devices. And at the start of 2013, the Prep community became familiar with a new look to Preps website - one that came with a new design and functionality as well as a portal log-in that is expected to be further developed in the coming year.

he artistic talents of Augusta Preps students took center stage in more ways than one in 2012-2013 - in one case drawing a large crowd of spectators as the school held its first Evening with the Arts event. The evening, which drew a large crowd, was a celebration of performing and fine arts at the schools Hull Fine Arts Center and parts of the Upper School. It was a new structure to a past community event called Arts Fest. This time, Lower School student artwork was framed and on sale in the Hutchinson Gallery while Middle and Upper School artwork and sculptures decorated hallways and rooms. Student-crafted birdhouses also could be found dangling from tree branches in the Teardrop area. Following a time for artwork purchases, the crowd then attended the nights Augusta

Prep Idol contest, which featured special guest judges and several student singers and dancers. All total, the event helped raise nearly $4,500 for the schools Fine Arts Department. Upper School students also took a trip in April to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta to see the Frida and Diego exhibit that they had been learning about. In the area of Performing Arts, Prep students fared well at this past years Regional

Literary and Music Contest that was held on Preps campus, with the school taking five first place awards. Those receiving awards were: Sarah Scott in Argumentative Essay; Trey Robertson and Morgan Rawson in Duo Interpretation; Charley Hagist in US Extemp; Adey Duncan, Lillian Peel, and Tyree Cowell in Girls Trio; and Ben Guthrie, Johnathan Kulovitz, Drew Chamberlain, and Nikolesh Rao in Boys Quartet.

t was an exciting past year in athletics at Augusta Prep, starting with the first home night football game under the lights. A large crowd, to include some invited from the neighboring Springlakes subdivision, packed in and around the thenlimited bleacher seating to experience a game illuminated by the schools newly installed field lights. Fans also enjoyed tracking the score on a new scoreboard made possible with the help of the Athletic Booster Club. Later in the school year the lights also illuminated the first night soccer match at Augusta

Preps campus. And among the 40 sports teams spanning Augusta Preps Middle and Upper School, there was much success on the field, track, and courts. Eleven teams reached post-season play in a state tournament. The Boys Swimming Team was the state runner-up in the state tournament held at Georgia Techs aquatics center just barely missing the top placement and featuring two first place finishes by Austin Chung in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. In its third year in existence, the football team took the region championship, and

A New Stadium For New Traditions

he 2012-2013 school year at Augusta Prep ended just as a major project began for the future of the Cavalier athletic program. Construction began on the Cavalier Stadium project within days of Augusta Preps Commencement, and just a few short weeks later a groundbreaking was held, involving Augusta Prep and Columbia County government officials as well as student/athlete Joseph Shaver. Despite several rainy days, the work progressed at a rapid pace, and the Cavaliers now have a new structure on campus for the

2013-2014 school year to use for better viewing of athletic contests and for creating new Augusta Prep traditions. The stadium was introduced to a crowd at the schools first football game of the year on August 23. The stadium was the culmination of a fundraising campaign that included nearly 60 donors who made gifts ranging from $25 to $300,000. The drive was part of an overall fundraising campaign that included the Lighting the Way campaign to install stadium lights at the schools athletic field. The $300,000 anonymous gift helped

jumpstart the stadium project. The new stadium has a capacity of 490 seats nearly double that of the two bleachers that had previously served as seating. The next phase of fundraising involves a Booster Club drive to build a press box on the opposite side of the field from the stadium. The goal is to raise $65,000.

mong many of Augusta Preps student outreach efforts this year was the Its Spooky to Be Hungry food drive, which Prep students participated in by walking through the nearby Springlakes neighborhood in October and collecting food and money donations. All total - to include the collections of a few other groups - 1,758 pounds of non-perishable food was collected in Springlakes as well as $1,992 in monetary donations.

Augusta Prep Middle and Upper School students also again participated in the schools second annual Prep Service Day, which involved Middle School students overseeing several cleanup efforts on Augusta Preps campus and Upper School students venturing out into their community to volunteer at such organizations as the Columbia County Cares Food Pantry, Columbia County Community Connection, Goodwill, the Humane Society, the Garden City Rescue Mission in downtown

Augusta, the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, and the Augusta Canal and Magnolia Cemetery for litter cleanup. Throughout the school year, Upper School students also participated in a recycling effort each Friday, collecting the recyclable waste of those on campus and sorting through it for purposes of turning in the results for a credit. Recyling canisters were placed throughout Augusta Preps campus as part of the effort.

Augusta Prep Middle School math teacher Peggy Kelly was accepted into this years Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy for math and science teachers. She was one of just nine teachers in Georgia selected and among just more than 200 teachers nationwide chosen. The week-long professional development academy took place in late July in Jersey City, N.J., with all expenses paid. The Academy designed for 3rd through 5th grade teachers - was launched in 2005 after Phil and Amy Mickelson partnered with ExxonMobil to develop the opportunity in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions. According to the Academys website, The Mickelsons wanted to develop a program that inspires teachers from across the country in math and science and equips them with interactive teaching tools to ignite their students passion for these subjects. They also wanted to create a program that helps to develop the next generation of science savvy citizens who will grow up to make the next breakthrough in medicine, in energy, or in any of the growing number of fields that require a solid foundation in math and science. Math Solutions Professional Development, founded by Marilyn Burns, and the National Science Teachers Association, design the curriculum. pper School Math teacher Tim Shafer is accustomed to numbers and how they carry significance. And this past school year, one in particular stood out - that of the number nine. This past school year marked Shafers ninth time being named by an Augusta Prep STAR student as the schools STAR teacher. STAR student Drew Chamberlain chose Shafer for the honor. Chamberlain, who graduated this past year and will be attending Harvard, was one of four students in Shafers Advanced AP Calculus class. Shafer started working at Augusta Prep in 2001. He has 30 years of experience in teaching mathematics, 12 years with a math team, and 26 years coaching baseball (16 as a head coach). At Augusta Prep, Shafer teaches Honors Algebra II and AP Calculus, as well as an Advanced Calculus course for students who have completed AP Calculus before their senior year. He also coordinates Squad M (Augusta Preps Math Team) contests and trips. His other major role is serving as Head Baseball Coach. Augusta Prep is a special place, Shafer said. The students are capable and diligent, and the opportunities in mathematics and baseball (two of the many possibilities) are excellent. It is a privilege to teach and coach here.

n the Lower School, professional development opportunities have been abundant for faculty. Susan Reynolds, Victory Duncan, Heidi Robinson, and Lalitha Kavuri all attended Orton-Gillingham training this past school year. Orton-Gillingham is considered the gold standard for teaching students with dyslexia to read. But it was discovered that the techniques also help all children to best learn phonemic awareness, the crucial building block to great reading. With this training, Augusta Prep now has the only O-G trained teachers in the CSRA. This summer, Lauren Ivey, Susan Yarbrough, and Susan Reynolds also attended the iSummit in Atlanta - a two-day conference that taught them how to best use new iPads in their classrooms. ugusta Prep alum Marianna Williams 08 has been preparing for a cool trip Arctic Circle cool, that is. Its really cool to be doing studio based research with experts on the rapidly changing arctic environment, said the Augusta resident of her planned travel with a group of scientists and other artists like herself to the Arctic Circle as part of The Arctic Circle Program. I think Im like the youngest person on the boat. Williams, who recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and this year started the interdisciplinary art and design studio Mill Works in Augustas Sutherland Mill, said she had heard about the project and decided to inquire about it. She was later notified she had been accepted as one of just a handful of scientists and artists to go on the month-and-half-long journey, which was set to take place in September and October. The Arctic Circle is an annual expeditionary residency program that brings together international artists of all disciplines as well as scientists, architects, and educators, according to its website. While in the Arctic Circle, Williams said her task will be to document her environmental surroundings through drawings and through some documentary film footage. Williams harkens back to her days at Augusta Prep in stating where her love of art first flourished: I moved to Prep for the art program and foreign language, she said. Thats where it started. If I didnt have that (experience and opportunity) I wouldnt be doing this.

ugusta Prep Alum Stacey Mason, 97, returned to her alma mater in February for an Alumni Lunch n Learn event for junior and senior Upper School students. Mason, who is currently a manager at The Harbour Group - a boutique public affairs firm located in Washington DC - spoke about such topics as the Middle East, public affairs, and international government clients. At The Harbour Group, Mason administers client projects including strategic planning and program development for the firms international governmental clients, and manages US public diplomacy and outreach programs for the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington DC. Prior to joining The Harbour Group in June 2010, Mason worked in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, for the Abu Dhabi Government. Mason told students at the Lunch n Learn event how she got involved in such a global career and how Augusta Prep helped prepare her before going on to receive her BA in Political Science from the University of Georgia and a Masters degree from American Universitys School of International Service. Mason spoke about the small class sizes of Augusta Prep and how that was very helpful in her academic development. She also spoke about her experiences in the United Arab Emirates. In addition to her role at The Harbour Group, Mason currently serves as an advisor to several philanthropic and community development organizations in DC.

During the 2012-2013 school year, Augusta Prep was pleased to announce the completion of a $1 million endowment fundraising campaign. The schools Framing the Fiftieth Campaign was launched in February 2011 to celebrate the

schools 50th anniversary. Because of the success in raising $1 million, an additional $500,000 gift was made to Augusta Preps endowment in support of its academic program and faculty professional development, bringing the total raised to just more than $1.5 million. The matching gift was generously made possible by past Augusta Prep parent and current grandparent Ann Boardman, who wanted to inspire others to support Augusta Prep.

Boardman also gave a separate $500,000 donation as part of the initial campaign. Nearly 100 donors made gifts ranging from $15 to six figures as part of the campaign.

Leading in the Leadership Circle

ugusta Prep has a long tradition of producing leaders out in its community, and within the Prep family there are also those leaders who show their committment within the institution itself - namely the schools Leadership Circle. This group of donors includes those who give $1,000 or more in a given school year. Their support is crucial to our schools continued strong financial standing, and each year we as a school thank those donors with a special Leadership Circle event. This past years gathering took place at Augusta Country Club. It was a well-attended event and included brief remarks of appreciation from Augusta Prep Board Vice President Grey Murray and Augusta Prep Head of School Becky Gilmore. The Leadership Circle is just one more way of showing just how committed you are to our school, and it also serves as a great example in

stewardship to each of our students. Thank you again to all of our Leadership Circle members who contributed this past year and to those who join with us again this year!

A Gift that Connects With our Students Future

Augusta Prep is now a wireless campus, and the school has former Prep Board Chairman Jim Hull and his wife, Karen Hull, to thank for it. The Hull family recently donated a gift of approximately $68,000 in support of the installation of wireless access on the campus of Augusta Prep as well as to help purchase mobile tablet devices for teachers. This generous gift from the Hull family brought campus-wide wireless access to Augusta Prep and allowed us to provide teachers with their own devices, Head of School Becky Gilmore said. This will enable teachers to strengthen the use of technology in their classrooms. We are grateful for this support, which made this dream a reality for Augusta Prep. Mr. Hull said he and his wife are pleased to see that the improvements are advancing the technological capabilities of the school, further adding to the great education that Prep offers. Prep has a special role in educating our children and future generations. Equally important is that Prep plays a vital role in our community. Our community must have a quality K 12 non-sectarian school choice to attract high-level professionals to our area. Prep fills the bill by providing superior academics while exposing the whole child to arts, athletics, community service, and diversity. Karen and I recognize the importance of Augusta Prep to the overall community. Having a wireless campus and state-of-the-art wireless devices for teachers will allow Prep to better fulfill its important mission.
