Conclusions
TheGSMradiointerfacehasevolvedoverthepastfewyears andwillcontinuetoevolveinthefuturetobringadditional featuresandimprovementsattractivetobothoperatorsand subscribers. Evolutionisprimarilyfocusedaroundthefollowingareas:
Interworkingwithotheraccesstechnologies(e.g.LTE); Increasingthroughputs; Increasingcapacities(improvedspectralefficiencyandhardwareefficiency); Supportforadditionalfrequencybands; Supportof(additional)locationtechniques; SupportofIPbasedinterfaces.

TheongoingworkwithinTSGGERANcontinuesto increasethesuitabilityofGSM/GERAN:
forstandalonenetworks; fornetworksusedinconjunctionwithotherradioaccess technologies(UMTS,LTE...)toprovideglobalcoverage whilstallowingexcellentservicecontinuity; asafutureproofplatformprovidingasmoothmigration pathtowardsother3GPPbasedsystems(UMTS,LTE).
