1. your engine is about to overheat. Now honestly, when was the last time you checked your radiators fluid levels? When was the last time you added coolant to your car? Failure to conduct tune ups usually lead to overheating. If youve recently added water and c oolant mixture into your engine cooling system, but you still experience this problem, your best recourse is to check your cooling system for malfunctioning auto parts. The culprit could be a loose fan belt, a busted radiator, cracked radiator hoses, or a stuck After identifying the problematic part, either repair or replace the component. I suggest replacing the component completely though. Especially if the part thats in question is more than just a few years old. If youre sporting an older ride, then your carburetors choke might not be working as well as it should be or it may not be positioned correctly. Remember, older vehicle models tend to foul up faster than newer models. Which is why it pays to conduct regular auto maintenance, increasing the frequency of your tuneups as your car ages. Check your choke plate. Is it positioned correctly? Is it still working as it should? Does it open completely? If not, then you either replace it or repair it. If the damage is quite severe, I suggest you put down your repair tools and start looking around for a replacement choke plate to avoid a repeat of this nasty episode. Malfunctioning ignition timing. The good news is that most of the time, you wont really have to make any replacements when it comes to wacky ignition timing. All you have to do is make all the right adjustments, and youve got great ignition timinghopefully for years! Too-Low fuel pressure. This problem could be caused by either a malfunctioning fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator. Check your fuel pump and fuel pump regulator using a fuel pump gauge. Note where the fuel pressure is dipping. If the culprit is a poor fuel pressure regulator, then I suggest looking around for a replacement part and taking your car to your local mechanic for installation. If youre a skilled mechanic, then you should be able to install a new fuel pressure regulator easily. But if youre just starting out, its always best to have the professionals take care of this job. Believe me, the fuel pressure regulator is not an easy part to install. Problems with your engine computer or computerized engine control system. Remember my post on DTC (diagnostic trouble code)? Youll need a DTC reader to interpret the codes coming from your engine computer. Look for a scan tool if you dont have one already and plug it into your engine computer. If you dont have one, there are some garages who would let you use their scan tools for a small pricesome might even let you use a DTC reader for free, so long as you promise to come back to them for tune ups and repairs. Point is, get a reading. Dont forget to test the circuits too!

If theres a part that needs repairing, leave it to the professionals. Unless of course, youre confident that you can conduct all these repairs at homeyoull need relatively expensive replacement equipment and tools for this though. Id hate to sound rather vague, but this could be indication of an ignition problem. Because your ignition system has numerous parts, list down the parts of your ignitionstarter, starter solenoid, ignition coil, distributor cap, distributor rotor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. Now, check each of these components starting with the spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and rotor. When you spot grave damage, replace, replace, replace! Otherwise, if its just a matter of grime buildup or dirty plugs, simply clean these components. If your wires are tangled, prevent arcing and damage caused by friction by using a spark plug wire loom or divider on your car. It basically organizes your wires and offer better insulation. In short, it keeps your wires organized, making it easier to access your spark plug wires for inspection and/or installation. Troublesome Torque Converter. Skip this part if youre driving a manual, since this component is only present in automatic transmission vehicles. Inspect your torque converter and try to determine if it locks during pivotal moments. (Pun not intended). A slipping torque converter could also mean trouble, so make sure your current converter is properly installed and in place. 2. What are the effects of running a car with low oil?

never keeps up on checking the fluid levels in his car. After realizing it'd been awhile (like 2 months) since he'd checked them, I took a look, and all the levels were fine except for the oil level, which was below the low line. I checked it 3 times to be sure, and there was only enough oil to get the end of the dipstick wet. My question is, how much damage/if any, could have been done, and how will we know if any has been done? He drives his car about 2 hours a day. We added oil and his car seems to be running fine. Also, if the oil level was really too low to run, would a 2002 Dodge Intrepid have a warning light that would come on? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

3.narrow down the problem. Is the car not starting? Running roughly? Conking out? Using too
much gas? Isolate the system most likely to cause that particular problem. If the car is conking out, the fuel system might be at fault. If it is not starting, look at the electrical system. Check the cooling system if the car is overheating. premium Ceria Powders and Slurries For Precision Optics Glass Polish you have isolated the most likely system, locate the weakest link in that system. The fuel pump, for example, is often the most vulnerable part of the fuel system. Check each successive part in the system until you find the problem. Replace or repair the broken part.

4. Diagnosing Low Oil Pressure Causes If you want to know how to fix low oil pressure, the initial place you should start is with your dip stick. Grab a cloth and pull out the dip stick. Give it a wipe and place it back inside. Withdraw it again and see what level of oil appears on the markers. All dip sticks will have two levels of marking. One mark is to indicate the minimum amount of oil that should be in the engine and one for the maximum amount. Anything within those parameters is acceptable, so have a look and see what shows up. If there is enough oil appearing on the dip stick, the problem lies elsewhere. If there is considerably less oil than there should be, you may have a leak or you may be burning too much oil.
Time of Year

If you find that you are getting low oil pressure in the summer but not in winter, or vice versa, you should examine the type of oil you fill your engine with. High viscosity oil will be able to maintain good pressure throughout the summer, but in winter when temperatures are considerably lower, you may be better to swap your oil for a slightly lower viscosity to cope with the cooler conditions. High viscosity oil is too thick to cope in cold weather, but in summer it will be come loosened by the heat. To the same token, lower viscosity oil will be better in the winter but during summer it will become too thin and the oil pressure will reduce accordingly.
Oil Sump (Oil Pan or Tank)

If symptoms so far are not indicative of anything you have seen on your vehicle, you should look at problems with the oil pump screen. The screen is like a remedial filter which picks up dirt, grime and debris. You can locate this screen inside your sump tank. You will have to remove the oil from your vehicle in the same way that you would to change the oil. Remove the sump tank and check the pick up screen. If it is clogged with grime and debris you will have discovered the cause of your pressure problems. While you are inside the oil pan you should also run a check on the pick up tube to make sure it is securely and correctly mounted and is not suffering any obstructions. If everything appears as it should you can replace the oil pan, plug the drain and then refill with oil.
Other Possible Low Oil Pressure Causes

Crankshaft journals and rod bearings could be worn out. Bearing clearance could be too high. Check if you are burning too much oil and what the causes could be.
