KingSagaraperformsAswamedhasacrifice. TherewasakinginthedynastyofIkswakubynameSagara.Hewasagreatrulerwhofoughtandwonmanybattlesoverallthe neighbouringkingdoms. Hehadtwowivesandanumberofchildreninthem.ThesonsofSagarawereextremelypowerfulandarrogant.Theywentinall nooksandcornersoftheearthfightingwitheachandeveryonewhocameacrosstheirway. SagararuledoverhisvastkingdomforseveralyearsanddecidedthatitwastimeforhimtoperformtheHorseSacrifice (Aswamedha)andbecomeanemperor.Hissonsroamedabouttheearthleadingthehorseasasignofregalsupremacyoverall kingdoms.TheymarchedalsoovertheoceanwhichwasturneddrybysageAgastya.Theretheylosttrackofthesacrificialhorse. Theprincessearchedeverywherefortheanimalandfoundnotraceofit.ThesonsofSagarareturnedtothekingandreportedthe mattertohim.Sagarasaid.Sons,youmustsomehowlocatethehorseandbringitback.YouknowthatIhavetakenthevowto conducttheritualandcompleteitwithoutahitch.Thepresenceofthehorseiscrucialfortheceremony.So,donotreturnwithout theanimal .

Thesagewasdisturbedinhismeditationandopenedhiseyesinfury.Suchwashispowerthathisangerburnedthehaplessprinces intoashesinaninstant.

ThewanderingsageNaradareportedthemisfortuneofhissonstoSagara.Thekingwasanguishedhearingthetragicendofhis dearsons.Therewasnothingthathecoulddoforthem.Hehadtakenthevowandcouldnotevenmoveoutuntilthehorsewas, somehow,broughtback. Therewasonlyagrandsonforthekingwhowasleftbehind.HisnamewasAmsuman.Hetoldtheyoungprinceaboutthetragedyof hisfatheranduncles.Thekingaskedtheboytotracethepathtravelledbyhisfatherandknowmoreaboutthetragedy.Ifpossible, heshouldgetthesacrificialhorseback,too.

SageKapilawasverypleasedwiththeconductoftheyoungprinceandtoldhimso.Heaskedtheboytochooseanyboon.Amsuman beggedthesagetoreleasethehorse.ThehermitgladlydidsoandencouragedAmsumantoaskforanotherone.Theprinceasked forthesalvationofhisdeadfatherandunclesthistime. Thesagesaid.Igrantyouthisboontoo,but,notimmediately.YouwillhavetobringthewatersoftheholyriverGangafrom heaventothisplacewhereyourancestorslie.Onlyyourgrandsonwillsucceedindoingthat . Amsumanreturnedtothepalacewiththehorseandtoldhisgrandfatherabouttheboonhereceivedfromthesage.KingSagarawas pleasedandcompletedtheritual.Heinstalledhisgrandsonasthekinginduecourseandretiredtoaforesttomeditate. AmsumangotasonbynameDileepawhowenttotheHimalayasandspentyearsinmeditationwiththehopeofpleasingthe heavenlyGanga.But,hediedwithoutsuccess. Bhageeratha DileepahadasonbynameBhageeratha.Theprinceheardabouthismissionearlyinhischildhood.So,hesetouttotheHimalayas whilehewasstillveryyoung. Hespentyearsindeepmeditation,prayingtotheholyGanga.Finallytheriverappearedasgoddessbeforehimandagreedtoflow downtoearth.But,therewasaproblem.Herforcewouldbesuchthatnothingwouldwithstandthefallofwaterfromheaven.It neededsomeonepowerfulenoughtoreceivethestreamfallingdownfromheavenandholdit.Thegoddess,herself,suggestedthe nameofLordSivaforthepurpose. So,BhageerathastartedmeditatingonSiva.TheLordappearedinduecourseandagreedtoreceiveGangafallingfromheavenin hismattedhair.BhageerathahadtopraytoGanga,again,andrequesthertoflowdowntoearth. Theheavydownpourofthesacredriverthenstarted,allthewayfromheaventothemattedhairofLordSiva.Gangawasproudof herforceandwasnotthatsurehowtheLordwouldwithstandheronslaught.LordSivasensedwhatthehaughtyGangawasthinking andstoodfirmwiththeresultthatnotevenadropofwatercameoutofSivashead! Bhageerathawastheonewhosufferedbecauseoftheshowofstrengthbetweenthedivinities.Hehadtospendyears,again,praying toSivatoreleaseatleastsomewaterforhispurpose.TheLordwas,nodoubt,pleasedwithBhageerathaandliftedsomelocksof hishair. ThewaterthatfellfromtheLordshairstartedflowingasthemightyGanga.TheriveraskedBhageerathatoshowhertheway tohisancestors.So,Bhageerathaspedfastonhishorseahead,askingtherivertofollowhim. Hefindsanotherobstacleontheway.AsagebynameJahnuwasinmeditationalongthepathofthemightyGanga.Hewas infuriatedwhentheriverfloodedhishermitageanddrankthewholeriverdry.IttookyearsofmeditationforBhageerathatoplease thesage.Thesage,pacified,lettheriverflowoutofhisears.Gangahasanepithet,Jahnavi,becauseofthis. Theriverfinallyreachedthedrybedoftheoceanandfilledituptoitsformerlevel.Bhageerathamovedfurtherdownintothe undergroundwheretheashesofhisancestorslayscattered.ThecontactwiththeholyriverpurifiedthesonsofSagaraandgave themimmediatesalvation.
