1.

Briefly state why it is important to study the Engineering Documents Prior to starting erection works.

To apply the required design, and produce an erection method statement that fulfils the design requirements. To have a safe and efficient erection and to prepare ahead of time in order to avoid any delays. 2. What is the torque required to tighten a bolt M24, grade 8.8, according to the Egyptian Code? (Hint T = 0.7 FYb AS)
M a = K d T = 0.2 2.4 0.7 6.4 0.8

2.4 2

= 7.59 cm.ton

3.

A multi-storey building has 5 bays with 6000-mm spacing between columns (in one direction of the building). The actual measured distances at the base of the columns were found to be: 6006, 5992, 6012, 5999, 6003. State whether the measured dimensions are within the erection tolerance specified by the Egyptian Code, why?

Max. Difference in distance between columns at the base should not exceed 10-mm. Actual distance is reaches 12-mm (6012) so it is not accepted. Difference between first and last column = +12-mm which is less that 15-mm (OK) 4. State the differences between bearing type and friction type connections. Bearing Friction Load is transferred through shear of bolt Load is transferred through friction shaft or bearing between bolt shaft and between surfaces of steel plates steel plates Can be used for HSB and O.B. Only H.S.B 5. What are the main differences between cellulosic and hydrocarbon fires? Cellulosic Combustible material is wood Slower in reaching high temperatures Reaches 880oC in 40-min 100 kW/m2 heat flux Hydrocarbon Combustible material is fuel Faster in reaching high temperatures May be accompanied by erosive ject Reaches 1100oC in 5-min 200 kW/m2 heat flux

Name:

1. Is it important to study the bill of materials prior to starting erection works? Why? Yes in order to determine the required crane capacities that will be used during erection and to find out if there are any missing items in the delivery. 2. What is the angle of rotation required to tighten a bolt M22 according to the AISC Turn of the Nut Method if the bolt length is 120 mm and both faces are normal to the bolt axis? (L/d)bolt = 120/22 = 5.45 (between 4 and 12) so use turn 3. The floor to floor deviations in a four storey building were found to be +8, -7, +18, +9-mm (starting from the first floor, floor height is 5-m). State whether these deviations are acceptable. Why? Accepted deviation is 0.003h = 15-mm. Therefore the third floor is not accepted 4. State four methods for tightening slip-critical HSB, Which one do you recommend? Why? Turn of the nut, calibrated wrench, tension control (shear-off), and direct tension indicator. The turn of the nut method is an easy method that does not require any special equipment or skills. 5. State 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of using concrete encasement as fire protection? Advantages Common material Low technology in application Easy to install Good durability Can be used for interior and exterior applications Disadvantages Aesthetics Needs more space Application is time consuming Heavy weight May have problems in durability during fire (concrete spalling)
