UPS TRAINER OPERATING MANUAL

INSTRUMENTS REQUIRED TO TEST UPS TRAINER 1. Digital multimeter. 2. Analog AC Voltmeter. 3. Battery 12v dc, 7 AH. 4. Oscilloscope 5. Variac 2 Amps. Connection details. 1. First keep the ups ON switch in OFF mode. 2. Connect the UPS Trainer battery terminal to battery with proper polarity. 4. Never connect reverse polarity, 5. Connect RED Terminal to postive and black wire to negative terminal. 6. If we connect reverse polarity then the UPS power stage will burns up. 7. Then connect the input mains cable to AC mains. UPS Operation In INVERTER Mode. 1. Keep all the fault switches in off mode, ie upwards. 2. Connect the AC Voltmeter to the UPS Output socket. 3. Switch ON the UPS ON switch. 4. The UPS ON led will glow, observe it. 5. Switch on the ups output ON. And measure the output voltage in AC Analog voltmeter with (0 - 300 ) Range. We can use digital mutimeter also, but it will shows normally 30 to 40 volts higher than the actual voltage, because the output voltage is square wave, not sine wave. For this we have to use TRUE RMS MULTIMETER. But it is not the problem. 6. Note down this output voltage as no load output ac out volatge. 7. Now measure the battery voltage in dc multimeter and note down as noload battery voltage.

8. Now connect a 60W Bulb at the output. And observe the output voltage, notedown the output voltage at 60 watts load. 9. Likewise measure the battery voltage also and notedown as battery voltage at 60 watts. 10. Increase the output load by adding another 60 watts bulb. And measure both output voltage and battery voltage. 11. Beyond this load, if we increase the output load, then the ups overload will occur and the ups will shutdown and overload LED Will glow. 12. Now keep the output load at 60w. Observing the output voltage by switch ON the feedback fault switch, Notedown the voltage as no feedback voltage. 13. Upto this procedure is loading characteristic of UPS. Next we will observe the battery condition. 14. You may observe that, the battery voltage will decrease at increase of output load. 15. And keep UPS in ON mode with load, Observe the battery voltage, it will decrease slowly in steps of 0.1 volts, that also depends upon battery charge condition. At one stage if battery voltage reaches 10.4 volts appros: then the low battery sense circuit will act and shut down the UPS and indicate it by glowing low batt LED. 16. Some time if nocharge is in battery, then the ups will not work, when we switch on the ups, it will goes to low batt mode. 17. In Inverter mode, check the output by switch on the NO PWM Fault switch. There is no output. 18. In CRO Observe the OSC and PWM Frequency as well as PWM ON time and OFF time with respect to battery negative terminal.

Mains mode operation

1. Connect the input mains cable to VARIAC output. Without variac, the ups AVR Section cannot be studied. 2. Keep the variac output to 220V, switch on the input ac ups switch, keep the UPS ON switch also ON. 3. Now observe the UPS Trainer, the Mains ON LED will glow and UPS LED will also glow by indicating the charging. 4. And the inverter section shutdown, UPS change over relay will act and output will change to mains mode, ie output will be from mains input with AVR Function.

AVR Function observation

1. First keep the variac voltage at 220v. Measure the UPS output voltage and note down with respect to input voltage. 2. Decrease the input variac voltage by steps of 10 volts, observe and measure the output voltage and note down with respect to input voltage. 3. Follow the above step still the input variac voltage to 165 Volts. At this stage slowly decrease the variac output and observe the UPS, At arround 160V approx: the UPS low voltage cut will act and UPS will go to Inverter mode. Notedown this low cut voltage. 4. Now increase the input variac voltage, beyond about 170 volts, the UPS will once again goes to mains mode and AVR will function. 5. Now keep on increase the variac voltage in steps of 10 volts and observe the output voltage with respect to input. And notedown the output voltage. 6. Follow the above step still the input variac voltage to 250 Volts. At this stage slowly increase the variac output and observe the UPS, At arround 260V approx: the UPS high voltage cut will act and UPS will go to Inverter mode. Notedown this high cut voltage.

Battery charging section

1.In mains mode, Observe the battery voltage by digital multimeter in DC 20 Volts range. 2. It will increase very slowly by steps of 0.1 volts. Keep some time ON , Then it will reaches upto 13.8 volts and stand still. It is the voltage of fully charged battery. UPS is calibrated at this voltage approx. Beyond this it will not increase. It indicates battery charged condition. 3. In mains mode, both the LEDs mains ON and as well as UPS will glow, indicating charging. 4. If we switch ON the fault NO CHARGE Switch, then no charging take place.

Change over section

In mains mode and UPS switch is ON. Now switch off the input AC, and observe the UPS, it will suddenly change to inverter mode, ie with in few milliseconds. And once again switch ON the input AC, Observe the output. Table all the Voltage readings in Inverter mode and MAINS mode separately. That is INVERTER MODE Output voltages against output load as well as battery voltage. In mains mode Output voltage against input AC volatge with low and high voltage cut.
