PASTORAL HOME CARE: ANOINTED BY JESUS, THE HEALER

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore, pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. (James 5:13-16) These words of the apostle James rooted in Jesus own ministry of healing and restoring wholeness to that which was broken are often cited as Scriptural evidence for that sacrament we now call the Anointing of the Sick. At our 4 p.m. Mass this weekend, Fr. Bertoli and I, assisted by the members of the pastoral home care team, have the privilege of anointing those members of our parish who seek the healing power of Christ in this sacrament. At the same time, we recognize and bless the ministry of our pastoral home care volunteers. These women and men, formed in this ministry at both the parish and diocesan level, faithfully visit nearly 200 sick and homebound parishioners, sharing their gifts of time, compassion, prayer, and the Lords presence in the Eucharist. Increasingly, we find ourselves visiting not only private homes and apartments, but hospitals, nursing homes and seniors residences. We celebrate Eucharist regularly at the Henri-Bradet and St. Andrews centres. Throughout the neighbourhood, our visitors conduct liturgies of the Word, animated with readings and music that restore the soul, and fostering a sense of community. Sr. Melanie Svobodas Community of Goodness Prayer has become a favourite as we gather to pray for and with those who are sick or homebound. I encourage you all to pray it this week: God, you call us to community. Help me to stay connected to the "extraordinary community of goodness" That surrounds me, and to which I belong.

When pain or illness tempts to isolate me from others, Help me to find creative ways to stay connected to family and friends. Give me the courage to reach out to those in pain. And when I am in pain, give me the courage to reach out to others for help. Give me a deep experience of the healing power of community. I ask for these graces through Jesus, who said, "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst." We are grateful for the witness our pastoral home care volunteers offer and comfort they bring. They and those whom they visit, who patiently bear witness to their faith in weakness and pain embody the spirit of healing, service, and perseverance Jesus praises in todays Gospel. God bless you all!
