>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ......psst.... Pass the Word.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A new toll free *fax* number is available for anyone wanting to set up accounts on MCI Mail: 1-800-I-WANT-MCI (1-212-787-2416 outside the USA)

The fax should include the name, address, phone and fax numbers of the requester. Typically, the account will be activated the following business morning. To help the new subscriber, a four page fax will be returned with the account information and basic starting instructions. You can also use the NEWUSER script described below. However, this toll-free fax number can be used by anyone with access to a fax machine. As we said..... Pass the Word. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NEED ANOTHER MAILBOX? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The NEWUSER script has been used by hundreds of people to set their friends, associates and clients up on MCI Mail, add new mailboxes to existing accounts, or to request information on behalf of a colleague. If you have a friend across town, or in another country who wants to benefit from electronic mail, or if you know of someone who tediously sends faxes out from a fax machine and is looking for a better way, or someone who sends letters and memos by overnight courier and would like to save some money, you can help them by introducing them to MCI Mail. To use this feature, at the Command; prompt, type: CREATE USING NEWUSER {ENTER} Answer all questions, and follow the instructions at the end of the SCRIPT. You will be notified when the new mailbox/account is active. Note. . . If you access MCI Mail via Lotus Express, or a LAN gateway, you may send the name, address and phone and fax number of the referral to mailbox 218-0241, or you may fax this information to 212-787-2416. We will contact them immediately and arrange for the account or mailbox. Additionally, the *FAX* number 1-800-I-WANT-MCI is available for anyone looking to request information or establish an account for themselves. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PRODUCT INFORMATION FORUM >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Businesses in the know sponsor lunchtime vendor forums. These meetings provide an opportunity for the area managers to become familiar with new services and products in a casual setting without taking time off to visit trade shows. Managers and employees get a chance to learn about cost saving

technologies used in other areas of the company through informal discussions, and question and answer periods. If you would like to have an MCI Mail representative come to one of your forums, please message us at mailbox 218-0241.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE II >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> In the last issue of the PEN Newsletter, we announced a new Global Access number for dialing into MCI Mail from Moscow (9715101). Recently, while the world was stunned by the events unfolding outside of the Russian Parliament (the White House), MCI Mail subscribers in Russia were temporarly cut off from MCI Mail because the communications lines used by MCI Mails Global Access run under the White House. We are delighted to inform you that the link is now functioning again.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MAILROOM WITH A VIEW >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> E. M. Forester wrote "Room with a View"... a love story that takes place in London, about a woman who needs to choose between a reliable but staid man, and a new and interesting one. In choosing the latter, she obviously risked losing the existing relationship. You however, do not face such a dilemma. If you use programs such as Lotus Express, Smartcom, Procomm from the Windows environment, you can now explore a new and interesting MCI Mail communications package, without committing yourself to the new relationship. Sierra Solutions' MailRoom, a Windows based package for accessing MCI Mail can be used for up to 30 days without a commitment. After 30 days, MailRoom will not connect to MCI Mail (unless you complete your purchase of the package for $85). MailRoom can be ordered by contacting Sierra Solutions at MCI ID: 545-0183. MailRoom was designed as a Windows front end to MCI Mail, making it easy to send and receive mail. Most of MailRoom runs off-line in a batch mode like Lotus Express or MCI Mail Express. Mailroom uses a series of windows to set up the program, create folders in which to store messages, view received messages, and a compose window with an editor to write messages. You can also import text for your messages from other word processing programs. MailRoom supports all of MCI message sending features such as receipt, alert, charge code, and overnight/priority delivery. You can also send binary files as an enclosure. Mailroom includes a number of interesting and worthwhile features:

A window that provides an accurate count of the number of characters in your message - a feature that can help to control your costs. It supports high speed modems up to 19,200 baud, and can use modems that are attached to your PC, or part of a pool on a LAN. Global Access is supported. It can track Daylight Savings/Standard time, and adjust the timestamps on your messages accordingly It has an unusual "Readback" feature that allows it to capture a copy of a message that you have just sent, and store it in the SENT folder, along with the MCI Mail network date/time stamp. This can be used instead of CC:ing yourself when sending an important message. Its "Answer with Original" feature allows you to respond to a message, and include a copy of the message that you are responding to... its big help when you need a "paper trail" for a message. It can, through its special log-on session, download the contents of an MCI Mail bulletin board at computer speed, and therefore, lower your bulletin board costs. You can set defaults for all of your messages, such as RECEIPT or specific handling prompts.... a very handy feature.

Messages that you have deleted are stored in the "DELETED" folder for a user selectable number of days before being deleted from the disk. It supports multiple environments, allowing you to have one log-on sequence for use at the office, where you might need to dial out through a PBX, and another for use at home, where direct access to MCIs 800 numbers is available. MailRoom features an Address Book for frequently-used addresses. Both instant (e-mail) addresses, EMS addresses, Fax, Telex and Paper addresses are supported. Addresses can be added manually or added automatically from received messages. Mailing lists can also be created, either from received messages or manually. It has a robust help facility, along with a "To Customer Service" menu option to allow you to send messages to Sierra Solutions' Customer Service if you have questions about MailRoom. Responses are sent via MCI Mail (of course). When MailRoom is operating, an icon appears that advises you of the status of your session. Although you can't program MailRoom to poll MCI Mail at regular intervals, you can set it up to poll at four specific times during the day. One of its drawbacks however is that binary files are uploaded to MCI Mail using the Kermit protocol rather than the significantly faster Z-MODEM protocol. This however, will only impact you if you are accessing MCI Mail

from outside of the USA. If you currently use Lotus Express, MailRoom can convert the existing Lotus Express messages over to the MailRoom format. Mailroom can be ordered by contacting Sierra Solutions at MCI ID: 545-0183.

>>>>>>> FAX Q&A >>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WHAT FAXING SERVICES CAN I USE? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Note: MCI fax services only work with Group 3 fax machines. However, the odds are that your fax, and any fax that you will fax to are Group 3.) MCI FAX BROADCAST MCI fax Broadcast is a store-and-forward fax service which provides a variety of features and options. It offers fax users the capacity to send a single document to up to 1,000 Group 3 fax addresses worldwide, by faxing the document once to MCI from your terminal. There is no charge for setting up a Fax Broadcast account, and there are no monthly charges or minimums. Because you not are sending your broadcast a PC, you can send the fax from any fax machine in the USA. The MCI Fax Broadcast is the fastest growing fax service offered by MCI. Applications include: Investment/Trade: send up-to-the-minute information on stocks, bonds, current price and market trends daily. Publishing firms: send monthly, weekly and quarterly newsletters and press releases to subscribers on issues such as tax legislation, consumer reports, and price updates. Newspapers: Faxing up-to-the-minute "zoned" news on a daily basis. Financial/Accounting: Handle customer credit information requests, process invoices, and forward ledger or statistical data cheaply and accurately. Sales Operations: Quickly transmit order action notices, delivery schedules, spec sheets, drawings, proposals, price quotes, and time-sensitive information. Purchasing Departments: Expedite the quotation and order cycle and speed order confirmations. Retailing: Speed delivery information, inventory status, and price changes.

Advertising and Public Relations: Meet media deadlines and forward publicity releases and product photographs. Manufacturing and Engineering Operations: Transmit design and drawing changes or new procedures. Shipping and Receiving: Improve the processing of orders and inventory. Other Possibilities: Law enforcement, news services, weather maps and medical data transmission.

BASIC FAX-TO-FAX MCI's Basic Fax-to-Fax service provides MCI fax subscribers the capacity to send real time fax transmissions from one fax terminal to another using a Regular Business Line on your fax machine. Use of Basic Fax-to-Fax can provide cost controls and accounting, and security not otherwise available from a fax machine. FAX FORWARD MCI FaxForward is an international store-and-forward fax service for Group 3 fax users. Currently, FaxForward offers service to Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia, with plans for expansion in the near future. Essentially, it offers you the ability to send faxes to the Pacific Rim at significantly lower rates than you would pay for sending them from the USA. FAX DISPATCH MCI Mail Fax Dispatch combines fax and electronic mail to bring you the best of both worlds. Fax Dispatch enables you to reach over 10 million Group 3 fax machines worldwide. Fax Dispatch enables you to increase your communications capabilities without investing in new software or new equipment. You can include fax addresses in your list of electronic mail, telex, postal and overnight recipients. Fax Dispatch generates high quality, accurate transmissions. By sending a fax directly from your own desk, you save time and increase security, efficiency and reliability. You do not need to retransmit messages and you can keep the fax machine available to receive fax messages. Fax Dispatch offers the highest output quality for both text and graphics files, alternate delivery of the message, not only to another fax, but optionally to the recipient by postal or courier delivery, and it is the only service that lends itself towards transmission from a computer instead of a fax machine.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I HAVE A FAX OR FAX BOARD.... DO I NEED FAX DISPATCH? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yes. There are many hidden (labor and material) costs that are found in traditional faxing that are eliminated when you use fax dispatch. For example, if you were to send a 3 page fax from New York City to Washington DC, traditional faxing can cost about $2.00 more than Fax Dispatch. FAX DISPATCH OPTIONS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW DO I FORCE A NEW PAGE ON FAX DISPATCH? The pagination feature provides MCI Mail interactive, LAN access and X.400 users with the ability to indicate where any page of text should end, and where a new page of text should begin. To use the new pagination feature, type the in-text command /PAGE/ on a line by itself, flush left. At the point where the command is indicated, Fax Dispatch will automatically flush to a full page and all the text below the command will appear on a new page. NO COVER PAGE OPTION You can suppress the generation of the Fax Dispatch cover page on a per message basis by specifying NO COVER at the Handling: prompt. This will prevent all fax recipients from receiving a cover page. Additionally, you have the option to suppress the generation of the Fax Dispatch cover page on a per recipient basis by specifying NO COVER at the TO: and/or CC: prompts. This will prevent only specified recipients from receiving a cover page. The default is the automatic generation of a cover page, so you must specifically state the NO COVER option either on a per message basis or on a per recipient basis if you wish to suppress the Fax Dispatch cover page. When the no cover page option is selected, recipients will automatically receive a one-line information header, unless you also choose to suppress the header using the NO HEADER option. PAGE HEADER OPTION This feature provides you with the option to include a one-line information header on each page of a Fax Dispatch message. The page header contains information about the recipient, sender, posting date/time and may contain a maximum of 90 characters. If selected, the header will appear on all pages including the cover page. Headers setting Headers setting prompt. can be selected on a per message basis either via the new ACCOUNT option HEADer, or by specifying HEADER at the Handling: prompt. can also be suppressed on a per message basis either via the account option HEADer, NO, or by specifying NO HEADER at the Handling:

The default account setting is NO, meaning no headers will be generated unless the no cover page option is selected. Specifying HEADER or NO HEADER at the Handling: prompt will override the account setting.

On a per recipient basis, Fax Dispatch customers have the option to specify either the generation or suppression of headers using the command HEADER or NO HEADER at the TO: and/or CC: prompts. This will result in only specified fax recipients from receiving or not receiving page headers on their fax messages.

OPTIONAL PAGE NUMBERING This feature provides you with the option to include page numbering on each page of a Fax Dispatch message. The page numbers will be placed within the header, if the header is also requested. However, page numbers are independent of both the header and no cover page options. When selected, page numbers will be printed on the first line of each page in the upper right hand corner. Page numbers will appear on every page, excluding the cover page. Page numbers can be selected on a per message basis either via the new ACCOUNT setting option FAX Page No., or by specifying PAGE at the Handling: prompt. Page numbers can also be suppressed on a per message basis either via the account setting option FAX Page No., or by specifying NO PAGE at the Handling: prompt. The default account setting is NO, meaning no page numbers will be generated. Specifying PAGE or NO PAGE at the Handling: prompt will override the account setting. On a per recipient basis, you have the option to specify either the generation or suppression of page numbers using the command PAGE or NO PAGE at the TO: and/or CC: prompts. This will result in only specified fax recipients from receiving or not receiving page numbers on their fax messages. Recipient level commands override handling line commands and account settings. COMMAND SUMMARY This is a list of the new feature commands and minimum acceptable abbreviations for each command. COMMAND ------NO COVER HEADER NO HEADER PAGE NO PAGE SMALLEST ABBREVIATION --------------------NO CO HEA NO HEA PAG NO PA COMMAND FUNCTION ----------------To To To To To suppress a cover page select a message header suppress a message header select page numbering suppress page numbering

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

TURNING YOUR FAX ON ITS SIDE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Using the landscape layout option, you can choose to send fax messages which may contain either 123 characters per line using the standard font or 169 characters per line using the condensed character font. A landscape page may contain up to 39 lines. Additionally, this new feature provides you with the option to change between landscape and portrait page layouts on a per page basis through the use of in-text commands, /LANDSCAPE/ and /PORTRAIT/ during message creation. To use the landscape layout feature, type the in-text command /LANDSCAPE/ or /LAND/ on a line by itself, above the text of your message. The command must appear at the beginning of the line. All text below this command will be presented in the landscape layout format, unless you also specify the command to switch to portrait page layout, /PORTRAIT/ or /PORT/ within the same message. If the /PORTRAIT/ command is indicated within the message, this will result in a NEW page, which will be presented in portrait mode. Note: The default mode will always be portrait unless otherwise specified. When changing between page layouts (i.e.: landscape to portrait or vice versa) a form feed will be added before the new page layout command, resulting in a new page. You also have the option to customize your landscape fax messages with optional headers, page numbers and signature graphics. These will be placed on the page consistent with the landscape page format. At this time, letterhead graphics are not supported for landscape layout messages when /LANDSCAPE/ is selected on the first page. The new landscape and portrait layout feature commands and their acceptable abbreviations are as follows: COMMAND ------/LANDSCAPE/ /PORTRAIT/ ABBREVIATION -----------/LAND/ /PORT/ COMMAND FUNCTION ---------------To position text in landscape mode To position text in portrait mode

REMEMBER: If you are creating the text while in Lotus Express and you have selected the UNWRAP feature, you will be required to put in carriage returns where you want the line to wrap. The Condensed Line Format is only available for fax messages and should not be used when hardcopy recipients are included on the same envelope. After you have entered the text press F10 and TRANSMIT. We suggest that you do at least one test message to YOUR OWN fax to make sure you have the instructions down pat. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW DO I SEND AN INTERNATIONAL FAX? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> If you are using MCI Mail interactively, enter the country name at the "Country Name" prompt. MCI Mail will place "011" plus the proper country code on the screen. Then simply enter the local phone number. If you are using Lotus Express, MCI Mail Express, or another Link product, you must include the international access code 011 and the country code in front of the fax number >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW CAN I FAX A DOCUMENT COMPOSED IN MY WORD PROCESSING PROGRAM? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All word processing programs provide for converting a document to ASCII. In Word Perfect, it is referred to as a TEXT file, in Multimate, ASCII and in Word Star, a Non Document file. Details of on these are available in your word processing manual, from mailbox 218-0241 on request, or can be located in the PC GUIDELINES bulletin board. Once a document has been converted, it can easily be uploaded to MCI Mail for transmission as a fax, telex, e-mail or hardcopy. You can also

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW CAN I PREVIEW THE PAGE LAYOUT OF A FAX? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> For interactive users, at the Send: prompt, enter NO. MCI Then type READ FAX.

Mail will display letterhead and line count information for your fax. When you are satisfied, type SEND to send your fax. If you are broadcasting a fax (or hardcopy letter) to a large number of people or if you use Lotus Express or another Link product, you may want to fax or mail a copy to yourself to assure yourself that the layout is exactly what you expect. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW CAN I SPECIFY WHICH LETTERHEAD AND SIGNATURE TO USE WHEN SENDING A FAX? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> If you have registered a letterhead and/or signature as your default, it will automatically be used unless you explicitly instruct otherwise. If you wish to use an optional letterhead or signature, use the FORM or SIGN commands at the handling prompt. For example: Handling: Form:XYZ, Sign: Sam Since you may have up to 15 letterhead and signature graphics per mailbox, a wide variety of options exist for your use of MCI Mail. You may choose to have one letterhead for your business, (ABC Inc.), another one less formal (From the Desk of Martha), possibly a departmental one (ABC Co. - Marketing Dept.) and a purely personal one (Martha Jones). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> CAN I REGISTER MY GRAPHICS BY FAXING THEM TO MCI MAIL? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MCI prefers not to accept faxed copies, as it degrades the quality of the graphic. If you are in a rush, use an overnight courier service when registering the graphic. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOW DO I SEND A POSTSCRIPT FAX? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Creating the POSTSCRIPT file involves these steps: 1. Altering the POSTSCRIPT driver in your program to create a file instead of printing the document to your printer. This is done only once. 2. Creating the document to be faxed. 3. Sending the file to MCI Mail as an attachment. Once a printer driver has been altered to output to a file instead of the printer, you are ready to compose your document. MCI Mail Fax Dispatch allows you to use a variety of fonts, graphics characters and images. When you have finished the document, select the "print" function, and make sure that the printer driver currently active is the POSTSCRIPT driver discussed above. When the "printing" to disk has completed, you may exit your program and

start up your communications software. The final step is to send the file with the .PS extension to MCI Mail as an attachment using wither Lotus/MCI Mail Express or ZMODEM (preferred) or Kermit. You should use your normal communications/e-mail program for addressing a fax as you normally do. If you do not know how to do this, please send a message to the toll free mailbox 234-9875, and specify the name of your communications software. The instructions will be e-mailed back to you the same day.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> QPW/WE AND MCI MAIL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The acronym may be hard to say, but the special offer below will speak for itself. Borland and MCI have announced that MCI Mail has been built into Borlands new Quattro Pro for Windows, Workgroup Edition. Access to MCI Mail from Quattro Pro extends true workgroup functionality beyond the traditional boundaries of the LAN. Users of Quattro Pro for Windows will now be able to share information not only with other members of their workgroup and co-workers, but also with vendors, clients, or other business associates on the same or different platform. One of Quattro Pro for Window's new features, Workgroup Notebooks, allows users to send complete spreadsheets, including all data, text, formatting and styling, cell formulas and references, etc. from within the application. Typical applications include forecasting models, order forms, expense reports, budgets, sales reports, price lists and more. Object Exchange (Obex) is the underlying engine that manages the transport of applications and files in Quattro Pro. Borland expects to build Obex into their other business management products as well, such as Paradox, which will facilitate even greater sharing of information between LAN and MCI Mail workgroup users. If you are planning on purchasing the Quattro Pro Workgroup Edition for use with MCI Mail, a special promotion will be included in the package, offering the following discounts:
