Introduction:

Traffic jam in Dhaka is very common problem. Every day we are facing jam. Government take some positive step .Otherwise we are going big problem in our daily life. Dhaka is a mega city. More than twenty million people live here. Day by day the number is increasing and most part of Dhaka is badly affected by the population growth. More than 7 hundred thousand rickshaws ply the city road, but only 75 thousand have legal number. This huge number of rickshaws is creating traffic jam. From time to time attempts are made to reduce the number, but the initiative usually produces no results. The number of rickshaw pullers is huge. Almost there are no roads or street or lane free from traffic jam.

Dhaka is one of the most unplanned cities of the world. It is lengthy in south and northern directions while its width consisting of east and western directions is few kilometers only. There is hardly any scope of its expansion in eastern and western side to a visible extent. There are different types of vehicles namely car, bus, jeep, truck, minibus, microbus, auto-rickshaw, tempo, mini-truck, motorcycles and innumerable rickshaws. Many of the vehicles that ply on Dhaka's streets daily are faulty and emit black smoke in excess of the prescribed limit. Black smoke is primary un-burning carbon that agglomerates into small particles caused by overload and faulty engine condition of vehicles. A two-stroke engine emits 30 times more pollution than a normal car.

Limitations of the Report

We have tried our best to make this research as perfect as possible; still there are some limitations of this research. It is acknowledged t h a t t h e w o r k h e r e i s e x p l o r a t o r y s t u d y b e c a u s e p r e v i o u s l y n o study was done. The survey took some time due to personal visits. Time constraints and cost are also the limitation of our study.

Survey Findings & Recommendations:

From our survey of Rampura Bridge to Notun Bazaar we have found several problems and tried to figure out the possible solutions for the problems. Our specific survey areas were: Rampura bridge to Merul Badda Maddha Badda Link road Uttar Badda Shahzadpur Notunbazar.

Rampura Bridge to Merul Badda: This is one of the busiest areas of Dhaka city as majority of the population of this city uses this route. Several problems were found in this section of the survey some of them are: U-turns Too much rickshaws Illegal parking Illegal Shops Frequent bus stops etc.

The main time of traffic jam in this area is from 7.30 am to 12 pm. This area includes offices, schools business centers and many other organizations that start at the same time. As a result everyone has a rush to go to work which creates a massive traffic jams. The possible solutions are:

Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules. Creating awareness about problems. Introducing parking spaces. Monitoring rickshaws and implementing separate rules for them. Short term:

Banning rickshaws. Banning unauthorized vehicles. Stopping frequent bus stops. Getting rid of the roadside illegal shops. Blocking the U-turns.

Maddha Badda: Although Badda stands just besides the aristocratic Gulshan area it is not fully developed and remains an old-fashioned Dhaka market where life style, culture and infrastructure are distinctly old. Moreover the bazaar seems to have been bypassed by modern communication and consumerism. The causes of the traffic jam in this area are: Rickshaws. Illegal roadside shops. Frequent bus stops. Illegal parking. The Maddha Badda Bazaar is a roadside bazaar that stretches from the main road to the nearby to the residential area. In total there are 200 shops and the modern Lutfun Shopping Center increases the value of Maddha Badda Bazaar. As a result there is a huge jam crated during the start of a working between 8.00 am to 12 pm. possible solutions are: Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules.

Creating awareness about traffic problems. Introducing parking spaces. Monitoring rickshaws and implementing separate rules for them. Short term:

Banning rickshaws. Banning unauthorized vehicles. Stopping frequent bus stops. Getting rid of the roadside illegal shops.

Link Road: In this area a road from Gulshan has met with Badda that is why place is known as link road. Its a three way road. Huge loads of traffic daily passes through this link road. Traffic polices face a hard time controlling the traffic as everyone tries to go first. Sometimes the traffic ahead is so much that the officer has no other choice but stop all the ways. The main reasons of this areas traffic jam are: Three way huge traffic rush. Sometimes the traffic gets out of control creates huge congestion. The traffic ahead stops moving because of too much jam ahead. Vehicles do not use specific lanes. There are solutions that can be implemented to reduce the traffic congestion in this area. These are:

Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. Giving license to the private car should be very limited. On the other side, number of public buses should be increased. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules. Introducing one way system. Monitoring rickshaws and implementing separate rules for them. Short term:

Banning rickshaws. Banning unauthorized vehicles. Stopping frequent bus stops. Getting rid of the roadside illegal shops. Blocking the U-turns.

Uttar Badda: Uttar Badda is the last area of Badda where creates the biggest traffic congestions. As there are several schools, colleges, madrasas and also working places thus there is a huge population rate in this area. The main causes on traffic jam in this area are:

Huge population. Rickshaws. Illegal market size roadside shops. Frequent bus stops & stands. U-turns. Illegal parking. The possible solutions for this areas traffic jams are: Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. As Badda has large amount of peoples; it needs lots of vehicles to carry them. So if the underground railway is started; it is then possible to convey most of the peoples in just one rail. That will not only reduce the numbers of cars to convey peoples but also give peoples the opportunity to reach their destinations at proper time. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules. Introducing one way system. Monitoring rickshaws and implementing separate rules for them.

Short term: Changing the starting time of several organizations so that theres not a lot of congestion in the same time.

Banning rickshaws. Banning unauthorized vehicles. Stopping frequent bus stops. Getting rid of the roadside illegal shops. Blocking the U-turns. Shahzadpur:

Shahzadpur is right before Notun Bazaar which is both a residential and industrial are. Compared to other places of our survey area Shahzadpur has a lot less traffic congestion. This is the place where the traffic losses up a bit. But still there are traffic jam presence due to schools, colleges and several offices.

Main causes of traffic jam in this area are:

U-turns. Rickshaws. Bus stands. Illegal parking. Schools & Colleges. There are a lot of things to do in order to solve the problems. We have found some possible method of controlling traffic jam by searching on various research papers and expert opinions. These are like below Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. Giving license to the private car should be very limited. On the other side, number of public buses should be increased. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules. Introducing one way system. Local Bus should be stopped at certain Bus Stoppage.

Short term: Car parking on the main road should have to be prohibited

Changing the starting time of several organizations so that theres not a lot of congestion in the same time.

Banning rickshaws. Banning unauthorized vehicles. Stopping frequent bus stops. Getting rid of the roadside illegal shops. Blocking the U-turns.

Natun Bazaar: Notun bazaar is a four way traffic one coming from gulshan, one from shahzadpur, one coming from Nadda and another coming from Nurer char. This place is right in front of American embassy as a result the traffic here is more strictly handled compare to other places of our survey area.

The main traffic problems of this area are: Increase in the number of vehicles Poor traffic management system

Rickshaws Illegal parking Scarcity of parking spots Tendency to break the traffic law

The possible solutions are:

Long term: Expanding the road. Building alternative road. Building flyovers. Giving license to the private car should be very limited. On the other side, number of public buses should be increased. Midterm: Introducing strict traffic rules. Introducing one way system. Local Bus should be stopped at certain Bus Stoppage. Traffic Police should have to be trained up Giving license to the private car should be very limited. On the other side, number of public buses should be increased.

Short term: Car parking on the main road should have to be prohibited. Local Bus should be stopped at certain Bus Stoppage. Polices should have to be strict on each traffic laws enforcement. Any kind of peoples congestion, meeting, symposium, or seminar should be prohibited in the middle of road. Each road must have separate lanes. Different type of vehicles will run on the different lanes. Up and Down bus lines should be separate.

Conclusion:
However, it is understandable that resolving the problem of traffic jam in Dhaka city is not possible within a short time. It needs both short -term and long-term strategies. Short-term strategies may include re-adjusting the school and office time keeping at least one hour difference, re-routing the public transport, reducing and replacing private transport with convenient and cheaper public transport, fixing different fare for rush and non-rush hour and finally keeping the foot-ways free from hawkers and shopkeepers. Long-term strategies, on the other hand, may be constructing long flyover f r o m o n e e n d t o a n o t h e r e n d o f c i t y , i n t r o d u c i n g underground rail service, undertaking co-ordinate and integrated city d e v e l o p me n t , rehabilitation

To reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka City, the most vital prerequisite that I feel, is the development of public consciousness. Unless and until we change our perception and develop a mind to abide traffic rules, whatever strategy we take, that will not work properly. I believe our law-abiding consciousness, goodintention and sincere co-operation can remarkably reduce traffic jam in Dhaka city.
