Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

This season, which really is a continuation of Ordinary Time (1), lasts twenty to twenty four Sundays and focuses on the Christian life of faith. The Liturgical color is green. It is the color of life, growth, and nourishment; the basic color of nature.

participation in the Blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the Body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. Those who celebrate the Sacrament together are expressing unity with both each another and Christ Jesus their Savior. When the faith publically confessed by the participants is unified, what God gives us in the Sacrament is pure Gospel and a truly a blessed communion and union with one another and our God. But if there is disagreement concerning Gods Word underlying a celebration of the Sacrament, its intended purpose is spoiled and those involved are improperly declaring unity where unity does not fully exist. The Lords Supper is truly a most high and intimate expression of unity. Paul writes in I Corinthians 10:16-17: Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a

Welcome in the Name of Christ!

We pray that you enjoy your time with us and that your spirit is enriched as we together sit at the feet of our Savior. Gods richest blessings be on you! Bathrooms are located in the north and south side of the entryway as you go down into the basement. The mens is on the north side and the womens on the south side. A small Nursery with a changing table and rocking chair is in the back of church on the south side; a carpeted play area is found in the basement; and black activity bags are available in the entryway. If you would like talk to Pastor about anything, catch him after worship or give him a call at 507-648-3601 (Cell: 507-276-5225).

Our practice as it involves the Lords Supper is based on a deep reverence for God and His Word; it is based on our profound respect for the purpose of the Sacrament; and it is based on a deep desire to in every way honestly, accurately, and clearly confess all of Gods Word to the world. Therefore, those who are not yet fully united to us are cordially invited and encouraged to speak with Pastor or an Elder so that we may work together for the truth (III John 8); for when spiritual unity is achieved on the basis of Gods Word, outward unity can and will be joyfully celebrated. Those who have declared their unity with us, either by their membership here or by their membership in another congregation with which we are unified, are cordially invited to express that unity at the Lords Table.

Service Notes
This week is our regular week for the WELS Connection. It will be shown at the beginning of the service before the Opening Hymn. Our Opening Hymn, Nearer My God to Thee, is from The Lutheran Hymnal and is printed on the Goldenrod Insert found in your bulletin.

First Lesson: Genesis 32:22-30 That night Jacob got up and took his

two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacobs hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, Let me go, for it is daybreak. But Jacob replied, I will not let you go unless you bless me. The man asked him, What is your name? Jacob, he answered. Then the man said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome. Jacob said, Please tell me your name. But he replied, Why do you ask my name? Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.

Second Lesson: II Timothy 3:14-4:5 But as for you, continue in

what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encouragewith great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Gospel Lesson: Luke 18:1-8 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to

show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, Grant me justice against my adversary. For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, Even though I dont fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she wont eventually wear me out with her coming! And the Lord said, Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.

It will be held in the cafeteria following the 3:00 pm Reformation Service in the Chapel of the Christ. A complimentary meal will be provided following the meeting. New Sunday Evening Bible Class: Beginning October 6th, we started a new series in the Sunday Evening Bible Class. Over a number of weeks we will be covering the first eight chapters of St. Pauls letter to the Romans. A unique aspect of this class is that we will have a guest lecturer of sorts, Pastor Paul Wendland, who currently serves as President and classroom teacher at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. DVD Presentation and Invitation: On the Wednesdays of October 9th and 23rd our Catechism students will view of the DVD God of Wonders. This DVD defends the Creation account as contained in Scripture and lays out evidence for the historicity of Genesis. The parents of our confirmation students and any other interested individuals are cordially invited to come watch this movie at the church. Both Wednesday evenings we will begin at 6:00 pm and go until 6:45 pm. The Regular Midweek Service (which everyone is invited to stay for) will begin at 7:00 pm. Hospital Visits: If you or a loved one is going to be in the hospital for surgery, tests, etc., please call Pastor Prell and let him know. He will add you to the Prayer Chain (if you wish) so that others can join in prayers for you. This also helps Pastor know who he needs to visit; due to health care regulations concerning privacy, hospitals no longer publish who is in the hospital. Thanks in advance for your help!

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another. Hebrews 10:25 I rejoiced with those who said to me, Let us go to the house of the LORD. Psalm 122:1

New Congregational Facebook Page: The Council has approved the posting of a congregational Facebook Page. The plan for the Page is to use it as an online communications platform for members and friends of the congregation. Sermons, Bulletins, the monthly Newsletter, events, and more can be found there! Ladies Aid Bake Sale: The Ladies Aid will be hosting a Bake Sale in the church basement following the worship service on October 27th. Families and individuals interested in donating toward the Bake Sale are asked to get in contact with Nancy Kosel or another member of the Aid. There will be no set cost on items on the day of the sale, funds will be gathered via freewill offering. Proceeds will go toward congregational projects. St. Matthews Butterfield Closing Service: On November 3rd, at 3:00pm, St. Matthew's in Butterfield will be holding its final worship service as a congregation, and the people of St. Matthews would like to extend an invitation to join them on that day. St. Matthews was began nearly 110 years ago, and for that time has served the Lord faithfully in the community of Butterfield. In recent years, they have cooperated in ministry with St. Johns in Darfur and St. Pauls in St. James. It is with a thankful heart that the people of St. Matthews come before the Lord to remember their past and look forward to their future, even if it must be in a different setting. Please come and join the people of St. Matthews in Butterfield to give thanks to God for his wonderful grace and to pray for his continued blessings in the years to come. Our District President, Pastor Charles Degner, will be preaching, and Pastor Matthew Natsis will conduct the liturgy. Following the service, there will be a meal hosted in the church basement. Open Forum: Preceding the Quarterly Meeting on October 20th, there will be an Open Forum after worship in the back of church. It is a Q & A session, it is not a voters assembly where decisions are made. It is an opportunity for anyone in attendance to ask questions about the Agenda for the Voters Meeting or about things going on in church in general. Pastor and congregational leadership will answer individual questions to the
