The top number in a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. There are three types of fractions: a proper fraction has a smaller numerator than the denominator so represents a portion less than one whole: for instance an improper fraction has a numerator bigger than the denominator so represents a portion more than one whole: for instance
11 3 1 2
a mixed numeral has a whole number as well as a fraction part for instance 2 1 3
2 means the same as 2 5. 5

2. EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS
Two fractions that are equivalent represent exactly the same portion of the whole.
1 3
2 6
This process either breaks the whole up into smaller portions or expresses the fraction in the simplest or most basic form. If you multiply both the numerator and denominator of a fraction by a number then you chop the basic fraction up into smaller portions. Examples a)
12 32 110 310 = 2 6
b)
10 30
The value of the fraction is unchanged because you are multiplying by the equivalent of 1 (
2 10 or ). 2 10
Equivalent fractions are often formed when we are adding and subtracting fractions.
b)
7 3 4 = 11 11 11
When the denominators are different form equivalent fractions to make the denominators the same. Examples: a)
1 1 + 2 10
First find the common multiples of the denominators. This will let us find the lowest common denominator (LCD) 2 : 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...... (like times tables) 10: 10, 20, 30, . 10 is the LCD - convert both fractions to 10ths :
1 1 + 2 10
= 15 1 + 2 5 10
5 1 + 10 10 6 = 10
multiply top and bottom by 5 now the fractions are like so add the numerators
b)
3 1 4 3
multiples 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, ..... 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, ... 12 is the LCD - convert both fractions to 12ths
to make to make
3 ? into multiply top and bottom by 3 4 12 1 ? into multiply top and bottom by 4 3 12
3 1 4 3
LCD = 12 -
33 14 4 3 34 9 4 = 12 12
Form equivalent fractions to make each denominator = 12 As soon as the fractions are like fractions subtract the numerators -
5 12
c)
8 5 9 6
LCD = 18
so
8 5 9 6 82 53 = 9 2 6 3 16 15 18 18 1 = 18 =
4. SIMPLIFYING FRACTIONS
When working out a fractions question, the answer should be presented as a proper fraction expressed in its simplest form or as a mixed numeral expressed in its simplest form to simplify a fraction divide the numerator and denominator by a common factor ( a common factor is a number that divides evenly into both the numerator and denominator ) Again this is equivalent to dividing by 1 so will not change the value of the fraction. Examples a) the answer to example a)
6 10
3 5 = 4 5
b)
20 25
80 140
20 5 25 5
c)
80 10 8 = 140 10 14
(usually when 10 or a power of 10 is the common factor 1 nought on the top is cancelled out with 1 nought on the bottom) 80 / 8 = 140 / 14 2 8 4 2 is a factor of 8 and 14 = 14 2 7

5. MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS
What it means: Multiplying fractions means chopping the fraction up. For example a)
1 1 1 1 means find of . 2 2 2 2
= =
1 1 1 1 of = 2 2 2 2
1 2
b)
3 10

what portion of the whole does this piece represent?? How to do it: The rule when multiplying fractions is to multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. Then simplify the answer if possible. Examples a)
1 1 1 1 1 = = 2 2 22 4
1 3 1 3 3 3 1 = = = 3 10 3 10 30 3 10
b)

6. DIVIDING FRACTIONS
What it means: When dividing fractions you are asking how many shares you have a)
5 1 8 4
5 8
5 8 1 4
1 5 s in ??? 4 8
shares
b)
one . How to do it: The rule to divide fractions is that you turn it into a multiply by flipping the fraction you are dividing by. Examples a)
5 1 8 4 = 5 4 8 1 = 5 4 20 4 = 8 1 8 4 = 5 = 2 12 2
( is the same as 4 )
1 5 4 8 = 1 8 4 5 = 1 8 8 4 = 4 5 20 4 = 2 5

d)
5 8 1 6

note: to multiply and divide mixed numerals you must first convert each fraction to its improper form or use a calculator.
