and business management to help advance Betterbees mission of being "your partners in better beekeeping". Jack, after graduating from Cornell, practiced veterinary medicine, working with cattle and horses in Granville, NY for over 30 years. He started with bees in the late sixties, purchasing his first package from the Montgomery Ward catalog. He is interested in the breeding of honey bee queens and has been producing local queens and nucleus colonies for the past few years. He also has been trained in instrumental insemination of queens and has begun producing limited numbers of these queens. He is a member of the Vermont queen breeders group and has taught beekeeeping classes for several years. Jack is excited to continue teaching beekeeping classes for all levels of experience as part of the Betterbee team. He lives with his wife Sarah in West Pawlet, Vermont. Classes on beekeeping topics as well as candlemaking and soapmaking will be held throughout the year. Beginners beekeeping classes will be held on Saturdays in January and February. Classes on spring management, preparation of overwintered nucs, disease management, fall preparations and other topics will be held later in the year. Where possible, hands on beeyard time will be included with classes. Monitoring and management of varroa mites, the most severe challenge facing honeybees will be emphasized. A queen rearing class, including both classroom and practical sessions will be held in June. There will also be open apiary sessions on Saturdays to provide hands on experience for beekeepers of all experience levels. Check the class schedule at www.betterbee.com or call us for details on class dates and times. This is an exciting time for beekeepers and the industry. Bees face unprecedented challenges including new diseases, pesticide threats and loss of floral sources. These challenges are more than offset by the tremendous growth of interest in bees and beekeeping. The Betterbee owners and staff stand ready to help beekeepers keep the excitement they feel when they first open a hive and look into the world of the honeybee. Chris, Joe and Jack want you to know Our goal is to provide quality products, excellent service and learning opportunities to bee enthusiasts young and old. We pledge to be your Partners in Better Beekeeping.

In September of 2012 Margaret Stevens sold Betterbee to Chris Cripps, Jack Rath and Joe Cali. They are thankful to Margaret and the entire Stevens family for the trust she has placed in them to lead the business from here. Bob and Margaret set a clear vision of being our Partners in Better Beekeeping. The new owners intend to continue this vision by emphasizing education and support. They have designed this catalog to help educate you as you decide what supplies to buy. On July 13, 2013

The new owners at Betterbee have much in common. They have lived in the local area, have kept bees for many years, and are large animal veterinarians who worked on dairy farms. While the transition from dairy cattle to bees might seem extreme, there are many parallels between proper care of dairy cattle and successful management of honeybee colonies. Both endeavors focus on animal health and preventive medicine. The new owners backgrounds in medicine and science make them highly qualified to help beekeepers manage colonies efficiently at a time when bees face many new challenges. One of their goals is to help beekeepers sort through the large amount of information available so they can 9choose beekeeping products and methods that are well-proven and scientifically based. As the new owners did with dairy producers, they will emphasize to beekeepers that diagnosis and prevention are important, and random or blind treatments should be avoided. Chris started keeping bees when earning his Beekeeping Merit Badge on the way to becoming an Eagle Scout. His mentor, Wilkins Gilbert,

became sick shortly after he started, so Chris took over the care of Wilkins hives which were scattered throughout central New Hampshire. While at Cornell University earning his Bachelor of Science, he took several beekeeping classes. After Cornell, Chris went to The Ohio State University for veterinary school and worked for Franklin and Delaware Counties in Ohio as a bee inspector. After graduation, he moved to Greenwich, NY to work for Joe Cali in his veterinary practice. He kept bees on the side, moved bees for pollination, removed bees from houses, and sold honey in local farm stores. Chris lives in Greenwich with his wife Sarah and daughter Amelia. Joe started keeping honey bees while he was in college. After graduating with his veterinary degree from Cornell, he moved to the Greenwich area with his wife Pamela and has been coming to Betterbee for as long as it has been in business. Having sampled the sweetness and frustrations of beekeeping over the years, he is excited to be immersed in the industry. It is his hope to use his experiences with beekeeping, veterinary medicine

Spring essentials
Continue monitoring for hives that are out of honey. Do not feed sugar syrup until it is warm enough for bees to fly regularly , (Daytime temperatures greater than 50 degrees) If weather is still too cold, feed winter patties or fondant. Pollen patties are used to stimulate buildup of hives in anticipation of the spring flow. Dont feed pollen too early because pollen supplements will cause rapid expansion. You dont want a large cluster of bees consuming large amounts of stores if April is wet or snowy and honey flows are late. Start a diary and keep track of when you first see pollen coming in and when different plants start to blossom. See page 84 for an overview of medications and treatments. There is much more information on our website, or call us if you have questions about medications. Be sure electric fence is working properly if you are in bear territory. Bears are also waking up this time of year.

Assemble new equipment. Paint hives using dark colors in the North and light colors for the South. You can often buy returned cans of paint at local hardware stores at deep discounts. Check hives and identify those critically low on stores. You can take off the outer cover and determine if the bees are tight to the inner cover. If bees are all the way to the top they may starve before spring. Consider feeding winter bee patties or fondant as emergency feed. Use a shim and place patties directly on frames. Even on cold days the bees will not be harmed if you quickly remove the inner cover, add emergency feed and then close the hive.

Review your hive records for the year and try to figure out what you did wrong and what you did right. Leave a case of two pound jars (p. 82) as yard rent wherever you keep your bees. Make creamed honey (p. 74) - winter is a good time to do it when you have a cool basement. Make some candles (p. 88-94) and soap (p. 95) for gifts from your beeswax. Put them in a basket with some of your honey and give it to someone who is not expecting a gift from you.

Also called the Snellgrove Board. Using a Double Screen allows you to effectively run a 2-queen (or even a 3-queen) hive. The double screen in the middle keeps the bees that are above from directly communicating with the bees that are below the screen, while still allowing heat to circulate in the hive. By manipulating the three different double entrances, one can add or subtract bees from the top or bottom, or run two splits on top of one parent colony. Can also be used to increase hive populations and foster swarm control. Comes fully assembled screwed, not nailed.
Dimensions: 20 x 16-1/4 x 1-1/4 Ship Weight: 5 lbs. Note: We only recommend the use of a Double Screen to the experienced beekeeper who has both the time and inclination to manipulate a hive for maximum population and production.
Use for better wintering and swarm control. A Slatted Rack is installed, as pictured, between the bottom board and the bottom brood chamber. In the winter, it keeps the brood chamber warmer so the queen can lay right to the bottom of the frame. In the spring and summer, when hive populations are at their largest, it provides a cluster space in the hive which can reduce swarming. Available for either 9 (for those who run 9 frames in a 10 frame hive) or 10 Frame Hives. Slats run perpendicular to the entrance. Fully assembled.
Dimensions: 20 x 16-1/4 x 2-1/4 Ship Weight: 5 lbs. Note 1: Our slatted rack can be used in combination with our Varroa Screens. The slats run from back to front so that they are directly under the hive body frames. That way when the Varroa mites fall naturally off the bees, they fall through the slats and through the Varroa screen. Note 2: Install slatted rack with the bars directly against the hive body and the open space above the bottom board. Bee History: Slatted racks were first developed in 1900 by C.C. Miller, author of the classic, Fifty Years Among the Bees. They were refined in 1950 by Carl Killion, who wrote the bible on raising comb honey, Honey in the Comb. We learned about them from John Brant, one of the few successful commercial beekeepers in N.Y.s cold Adirondack Mountain region. John swears they are absolutely essential to good wintering and swarm control in the North.

The bees can go around the edges, but the queen USUALLY stays in the middle of the hive and is excluded. Once you are confident your supers are drawing enough workers, you can turn the excluder to its traditional placement, but remember to check for your queen up in the supers. Hold onto that swarm Brian Daigle, an experienced upstate NY beekeeper, gave us this great idea: after a swarm is caught, insert a queen excluder between the bottom board and hive body for a few days to keep your swarm from leaving.

Heavy-duty weather protection for your bees. This type of Outer Cover (combined with a proper Inner Cover) is advantageous in any region. It functions like the eaves of a house, protecting the hive bodies from both rain and wind. Our Outer Cover features the deepest rim available in the industry, PLUS a heavy duty 26 gauge, galvanized top. Serious protection for your bees.
Dimensions: 22-1/4 x 15-3/4 x 2-1/2 Ship Weight: 8 lbs. Hint: Our Telescoping Outer Covers are constructed with a 26 gauge galvanized metal. Others will try to sell you 30 gauge which we find tears very easily and does not last.

The 7/8 inch difference. Betterbee only sells woodenware that is 7/8 inch thick thats 14% thicker than the industry standard. Does thickness matter? We think so, because it gives you more: Insulation, Durability, Bang for Your Buck and Secure Handholds. a perfect fit: Our Hive Bodies and supers are interchangeable with all other American standard equipment, even though our Hive Bodies have thicker, stronger walls that fit perfectly with all standard Langstroth. The thicker wood also makes possible a deeper, easier to grip handhold. That means fewer accidents in the field when youre wearing gloves. Its not the knot. The knots are not a concern to the bees. A sound or tight knot is actually a stronger piece of wood (the closer the rings are together, the stronger the wood). Bees will adapt to the environment provided by propolizing the interior space.

This may not always be true, but it helps with mixing sugar syrup. Syrup is often talked about as 1:1 or 2:1. This is the amount of sugar to water based on weight. A 2:1 syrup is made by mixing 10 pounds of sugar with 5 pints (or 2.5 quarts) of water. To make the sugar dissolve in this mixture, you need to lightly heat the mixture. This saying does not work for honey! Honey jars in this catalog are sold by honey weight not liquid volume. An 8 ounce honey jar will not hold 8 fluid ounces of water. Honey is heavier than water.

Betterbee
Offers a better hive for wintering bees. This, and more mite resistant bees, may be the salvation of American beekeeping.
In 2000, Betterbee introduced the BeeMax line of polystyrene beekeeping products as a better way to raise your bees. The Complete BeeMax Beginners Kit
The quote (above right) from a long time manufacturer of wooden beehives reveals how important and revolutionary the BeeMax Polystyrene hive bodies are. Start off your new hobby or update your old one with the best and most up-to-date equipment. Your bees will get off to a faster start in these hives, make more surplus honey for you and your family and survive the winter better than in a wooden hive.
Ship Weight: Ships in 4 boxes; 50 lbs. Note: The Complete BeeMax Beginners Kit is sold unassembled. However, the beauty of our BeeMax products is just how easy they are to put together. Youll be up and running in less than 1/2 hour. Note: No substitutions for the items in this kit.

BeeMax FAQs:
Can I use my wooden honey supers on top of a BeeMax hive for honey production? Yes, wooden supers fit nicely on a BeeMax hive, but the walls are thicker, so a portion of the top of the BeeMax hive wall will be exposed. Paint this area when you paint your hives if you use wooden supers. Will my BeeMax hive withstand the same kind of beekeeper abuse that wooden hives can? No, their longevity will be based on the extra care you give them. Dont throw them around or drop them. If reasonable care is taken, they should last as long as a wooden hive. Will field mice be able to chew through the entrance of a BeeMax? Possibly, especially in areas where mice are looking for a warm place to spend the winter. We use a mouse guard. See page 35. Will bees propolize these hives as much as wooden hives? No. The bees dont seem to propolize BeeMax hives as much. Because of the design of the frame rests, you will find it much easier to remove frames for inspection with a BeeMax hive. Plus, its easy to separate the supers with hive tools. Are ants, mice and wax moths a problem with these hives? Pests are no more of a problem in BeeMax hives than in wooden hives. If the hives are strong, your bees will keep these pests out themselves.

Mouse Guard
Of the thousands of BeeMax hives we sold last year, including the hundred or so we used ourselves, we have had only one complaint of mouse damage to the front of one hive. If you live where mice are a problem and want to protect your hives this is the solution.
Note: This is not an entrance reducer/closure. The mouse guard is inserted to cover the bottom of the hive body edge, not to cover the entrance.
1. Lay one of the sides (A), with 2 prongs on each end, down on a flat surface. Gently push an end piece (B) into the side piece.

The 8 rules to successful ordering of bees and queens:
Betterbee
Live Bees 3 lb. Italian package of bees with an Italian Queen
Packages consist of 3 pounds of bees in a screened cage along with a laying queen in a separate cage. There is also a can of sugar syrup to provide food for the bees during transport. The packages come from Wilbanks Apiaries in Claxton, Georgia. They are transported directly by truck, arriving at Betterbee less than 24 hours after packaging. Package bees are an economical and effective means of starting a beehive. Tentative Bee dates are late April and early May. Please make sure contact information is correct so we can call you with Bee Day dates.

Carniolan Queens
The Carniolan honey bee, Apis mellifera carnica, is one of the two subspecies of the Western honeybee commonly used in American beekeeping. The other subspecies is the Italian bee. Carniolan bees originated in Carniola (which is now part of Slovenia) and surrounding regions. They are known for their gentle disposition, resistance to mite infection and their ability to rapidly control hive populations in response to nectar flows. Brood production increases rapidly in the spring in response to nectar flow. Brood production also decreases rapidly at the end of the honeyflow. These bees typically are very frugal with winter stores, successfully over wintering with lower honey consumption than Italian bees.
Note 1: The queens shown above are marked only for illustrative purposes. If you want to mark your own queens, buy our Queen Marking Kit (QMC) on page 39. Note 2: There are different options available for shipping queens. The best choice for you depends on time of year, distance traveled and number of queens to be shipped. If you would like queens shipped you can either call to place the order or place your order on line and then call to arrange shipping choice. Our sales representatives can help you determine the best shipping choice for your situation.
1. Order Early: We usually sell out of both nucs and packages. 2. Full Payment is due when your order is placed. All bee and nuc orders are invoiced separately. No exceptions. 3. Cancelled Orders: BEES - $10 fee PER PACKAGE until 30 days before scheduled pick-up date. Less than 30 days to pickup - NO REFUNDS unless package can be resold. In the case that we can resell the package only the $10 cancellation will be charged and the balance will be refunded. NUCS - $20 cancellation fee per nuc 4. Supply Orders: For the sake of efficiency on Packaged Bee Days, please place accompanying supply orders in advance of bee pick up. 5. No Returns: There are no returns or refunds once the customer accepts the bee package, queen and/or nuc at our warehouse in New York. 6. We do not mail packages: Our experience with mailing packages through the US Postal Service has led us to the belief that picking up packages at a central location ensures a greater survival rate amongst the honeybees in packages. 7. Please plan ahead: Beekeeping is a form of agriculture and is subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Betterbee will do its best to deliver the bees on time; however, unfavorable weather may prevent us from doing so. Should there be a change in delivery dates, we will contact you. Please plan accordingly. 8. Build & paint: Build and paint your hives ahead of getting your bees. You will be too busy once you get the bees to build equipment.

We will be offering locally raised northern Carniolan queens starting in June. These northern queens should be acclimated for our northern climates. Perfect for requeening or preparing nucs to be overwintered.

Queen Rearing
Better
There is a great deal of interest in queen rearing among beekeepers. The possibility of selecting and breeding queens that are resistant to Varroa mites, foulbrood and chalkbrood is very exciting. Queen rearing is not difficult but requires attention to detail and a number of steps that must be done on a specific schedule. There are many different methods available. Chose a method and give it a try. Contemporary Queen Rearing by Harry Laidlaw gives detailed descriptions of the many techniques used to raise queens. Betterbee will be offering a class on queen rearing in June. Several methods will be described and demonstrated.

Duragilt Foundation
Consists of a thin, plastic inner core coated on both sides with beeswax. Its metal edges mean NO wiring or support pins.
Works best with: Grooved/Grooved or Wedged/Grooved Frames
Dimensions: Available in Deep (8-1/2 x 16-7/8), Medium (5-5/8 x 16-7/8) or Shallow (4-3/4 x 16-7/8). Ship Weight: Listed below with each product. Note: In all foundation sold by the pound, sheet counts are approximate because of variations in manufacturing. Hint: The wax may eventually peel off the plastic base on a Duragilt Foundation. We suggest recoating it with some liquid beeswax to encourage your bees to draw on it.
Crimp-Wired Foundation
We stock Crimp-Wired Foundation with hooks for placing under the wedge on a Wedge Top Bar Frame for extracted honey. When used for extracting, deep foundation must be anchored with either support pins or wire (see page 48). Anchors are not necessary for foundation used for brood comb.

3 types of smokers and 2 types of fuel for all types of beekeepers! Beekeepers are as varied in their needs and tastes as the general population is. One will be just right for you!
Baling Twine
Smokes for 80-90 visits to the beeyard. Nothing beats baling twine in your smoker for a cool and long lasting smoke. Our rolls of untreated twine are light brown. and approx. 1,400 feet long. Just unravel and cut off enough to stuff your smoker full.
Ship Weight: 12 lbs. DID YOU KNOW: One used to be able to get an unlimited amount of untreated baling twine for free from farmers. Unfortunately, many of the farmers use a sisal twine treated with a rodenticide to discourage mice from chewing on it or they use a polypropylene twine. You can tell treated twine because it is colored, green or orange. Even though the dairy farmer would love to give it to you, its probably not the best idea to smoke your bees with it.

Another great innovation exclusively from Betterbee. Our Hive Portals are the next generation of hive entrances far superior to any other disk entrance on the market. Made of high strength but flexible ABS plastic, this disk entrance holds up to the rigors of beekeeping as no other can. The recessed center hold accommodates a countersunk bolt to properly secure the Portal to your nuc box and prevents shifting of the washer. This Hive Portal features improved functionality with each quadrant clearly labeled for ease of use and identification, so you can quickly dial the entrance to your needed management tool.
Ship Weight: 1 lb. About our colors: This Hive Portal is uniquely colored to maximize your honeybee's ability to locate its unique home. Based on the principles laid out by the late Dr. Karl Von Frischs pioneering work in honeybee vision, this Hive Portal is offered in Violet, Blue, Orange and Yellow. These colors are the most recognizable to honeybees, helping them to locate their hive. Frischs work was instrumental in establishing both that honeybees can see not only specific colors but also that their behavior can be modified. Each color for the Hive Portal was selected and tested to help the bees narrow in on their nuc or hive.
This chart contrasts human eyes response to color in relation to bees response to color.

Simply move the fork parallel to the comb and you can easily lift out the white drone larvae and see the mites.

66 Extracting Equipment
Extracting Equipment
67
Now - an extractor that you can upgrade as you expand your hobby! Buy a core system at an attractive price and then upgrade the extractor as your hobby grows. These extractors are built to last - All American Made. We worked with Teddy and Jake at Maxant Industries to come up with an extractor that could be made for the needs of a beginning beekeeper and then upgraded as the beekeeper expanded their apiary. This is a rugged lifetime unit. If you outgrow it, you will be able to confidently sell it to a new beekeeper or give it to a grandchild to start them on their way! When choosing an extractor, ask yourself: How many hives do you have, and perhaps the more important question, are you going to increase your numbers? If you have one or two hives and do not expect to expand beyond that then it is hard to beat the HE 2200 plastic extractor at its low price. It is affordable and functional. If you plan on growing or even think your hobby may grow beyond two hives then consider the Maxant system. Based on the popular Maxant 3100 workhorse the 3100-2 gives you the ability to extract 2 medium or shallow frames radially. Radial extraction is much more convenient than tangential as you do not need to stop and flip the frames and there is less chance of damaging those newly drawn frames of honey comb. The basket of the 3100-2 will not accept deep frames but with most current techniques of hive management these frames contain the honey we are leaving for the bees so we do not consider this to be a disadvantage. As you get more hives and more frames to extract just buy the 9 frame basket and you will be extracting 3 to 4 times faster! The 9 frame basket is designed to hold 6 medium or shallow frames radially and if you want you can put in 3 more to extract tangentially. The 3 frames can be deeps if need be as the basket is large enough to accommodate them. When you add more hives and a manual system gets to be too much exercise just add a motor kit. Now you are good until you decide to go big as a sideliner. Then pick the size extractor you will need and sell your 3100 extractor, or keep it to use for demonstrations at schools or fairs or classes for new beekeepers.

Extracting
Maxant 3100-2: Perfect for the hobbyist who wants alifetime piece of extracting equipment.
Just what you need as a beginning beekeeper when you are ready to extract your honey crop. This two-frame radial extractor is sturdy enough to last a lifetime, set up to get the job done easily, priced right for the job it does and then when you need more capacity and speed, serves as a base unit that is upgradable without having to buy a whole new extractor. If your intention is to stay in beekeeping, in our opinion, this is the extractor to start with. This extractor is made with 20 gauge stainless steel (the smaller the gauge the thicker the metal) with extra stiffening support at the top and bottom. The legs are secured to the support ring on the bottom so there is no stress on the tank walls. The tig welded conical bottom helps to efficiently drain the honey from the extractor. We are not aware of another entry level extractor that offers radial extraction and the ability to be upgraded so easily as your needs change.

Hint2: Don't spend lots at other supply companies for calibration fluid. We provide callibration directions using supplies available at your local pharmacy. Honey refractometers do not callibrate with water!
We recommend wide mouth glasses jars for creamed honey. See Page 82 and 83.
Hint 1: You can liquefy a 60 lb. pail of granulated honey in it by surrounding the pail in a water bath.

Ideal for filtering your melted wax. When the filtering process is complete, place the cone in the freezer for a few hours, remove and simply break the leftover wax off the cone.
Ship Weight: 3 lbs. Note: For safety, use protective eyewear when breaking frozen wax off the filter cone.
Hint 2: Clean and filter wax from cappings or old comb by mixing them with water and bringing to a boil. The water and dirt fall to the bottom leaving the cleaned, liquid wax which can then be strained. Cleans about 100 lbs. in one batch in about 6 hours.

Varroa mites are the most serious threat facing honeybees today. Mites not only kill bees and weaken colonies but are responsible for the spread of and increased prevelence of viruses in colonies. The result of this combination of mites and virus infection is called parasitic mite syndrome (PMS). To successfully keep bees today you need to monitor the levels of mites in the hive and keep the levels low. In general if mite levels get above 3 to 4 percent as measured with a sugar shake or ether roll, the colony needs to be treated.
2013

Apiguard
Another safe, easy to use alternative to the Hard Chemicals. Apiguard is a thymol based miticide which is suitable for natural use. It is as easy as removing the foil lid and placing the container on the top bars of your hive. After two weeks, remove the first container and apply a second dose for another two weeks. Apiguard should be used between 60F -100F, and the warmer it is, the better it will work. Available in packs of 10 (treats 5 hives) or a bulk pail of 6.6 pounds (which will treat 30 hives dispensing tools included). Follow all label instructions.
Ship Weight: 10 pack/2 lbs., 6.6 lb. pail/8 lbs. Note 1: The bees must be able to access the gel. Use either a Betterbee Shim (page 86) or an empty super to elevate the hive cover to provide the necessary space. Note 2: Thymol vapors are heavier than air so it is important to seal off your varroa screens. Note 3: Not approved for use during a honey flow.

Tylan
Tylan is labeled for use only in cases of American Foulbrood resistant to oxytetracycline. One bottle is 500 treatments. Treatments must be completed at least 4 weeks before honeyflow or after honey supers have been taken off.
Ship Weight: 1 lb.
Fumagilin-B
Fumagilin-B is an antibiotic with activity against Nosema apis, a protozoan disease causing diarrhea and shortened lifespan in affected bees. It is unclear whether Fumagilin-B is effective against the more recently recognized Nosema ceranae. There is great controversy about the significance and impact of Nosema disease. Some trials have shown great benefit from nosema treatment while other studies have shown no effect. For further information on Nosema disease visit

We recommend wearing gloves when you use MiteAway Strips, Apiguard and Apistan Strips.
Oxytetracycline is used as an aid in the prevention of American Foulbrood AFB. The only appropriate use is to prevent hives from becoming infected. If one knows there is AFB in the vicinity antibiotics may prevent your hives from becoming infected as your bees rob hives weakened or killed by foulbrood. Since the bacteria forms spores which are unaffected by antibiotics, treatment will not cure hives that are infected. It will mask signs of the disease, but symptoms will recur after treatment is stopped. Oxytetracycline powder is mixed with powdered sugar and dusted onto the tops of frames. One ounce (2 tablespoons) is applied 3 times at 4 to 5 day intervals to the top of the frames in the brood chamber. Application should be around the edges of the brood chamber to avoid powder killing uncapped brood. Oxytet residues can get into honey. For this reason it should be applied in the spring at least 45 days prior to putting on supers for the honey flow or in the fall after honey supers have been removed. OXY1 makes 16 treatments and OXY2 makes 500 treatments.

Contact us about an advanced class in candle making where you will learn the tricks and techniques for making hand dipped tapers, purifying your own wax and advanced molds techniques and bring your hobby to the next level. Candlemaking classes will be taught by Travis Kline, the owner of Cambridge Candles, a natural beeswax company. Travis is a teacher, artist, and candlestick maker. He graduated from Bennington College with a Masters in Teaching and Fine Arts. When not teaching art at Burr and Burton Academy High School he has taught at museums, art centers and summer classes. Primarily a sculptor and photographer, he fell in love with the medium of wax by mistake after discovering a chandler's cabinet at a garage sale. This is a great opportunity to learn from all of his experience.

The Master Beekeeper program is a beekeeper certification program. It was developed by the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) to teach beekeeping skills and promote best management practices for beekeepers. More information is available at http://www.easternapiculture.org/master-beekeepers.html The certification exam is held each year at the EAS meeting in August. Location of the EAS meeting changes each year. In 2013 it will be held in Pennsylvania. In the past, these classes have been taught at Betterbee by Dr. Nick Calderone of Cornell University. Dr Calderone is retiring from Cornell and will not be presenting master beekeeping classes this year. Betterbee will be presenting similar classes this year taught by our own very knowledgeable staff. The goal of the classes is to help beekeepers expand their knowledge and understanding of beekeeping techniques and practice. A secondary goal is to help prepare for the EAS Master Beekeeper certification program. The spring class will be a two day class providing 8 hours of classroom instruction, four hours of apiary work and a two hour laboratory session. The goal is to help beekeepers develop basic beekeeping skills. Topics will be starting with bees, beekeeping equipment, spring and summer management, identification and management of bee pests and basic bee biology The fall course is a one day, eight hour class that builds on the spring course and helps build additional beekeeping skills. Topics covered include removing and processing honey, identification and management of bee pests and preparing colonies for winter.

Betterbee Premium
honey labels
Betterbee offers the finest labels for you and for your honeybees finest work. Betterbee pioneered the first full-color labels for honey containers over 21 years ago. During that time our research and artistry have continued and we have developed new labels to meet the needs of beekeepers and the changing times. Our labels are a PROVEN MARKET SUCCESS. We know this not only because our competitors have copied our business model in the past years; we really know they are successful because we have seen them selling good local honey on store shelves from Atlanta to Sacramento and everywhere in between.
Please note: For your convenience and speed of delivery, all custom printed label orders are invoiced and shipped separately from merchandise orders.
Turn the page to choose the label that will be best for your business!
Not all labels are created equal! Our labels are designed by artists with beekeepers and their customers in mind.
