Learning to read
*******************
There are also other skills and abilities which must be developed along
the way. Remember: the single most important thing you can do to
prepare your child for school is to read to them every day.
When these other skills have been acquired your child will:
Learning to Read
One of the most important skills a child will ever master is learning to read.
Reading opens doors that otherwise would remain closed. Reading introduces
children to the world at large, enabling them to experience things that would
be impossible otherwise. However, there has been much controversy in
recent years about the best methods to use in order to teach reading.
For instance, there’s the “Look and Say” or “Whole Word” method.
In this way, children learn to recognize words, usually beginning with their
own names. They do not break words apart into syllables, but rather learn
words in their entirety. In essence, children form pictures of words in their
heads which they are able to recall when asked to do so. This method,
however, can be difficult for children with poor memories.
In order for any child to write meaningfully, he or she must first build
up their fine motor skills. Art projects, working with play dough,
measuring and pouring sand and water, and practicing writing are
excellent ways to improve fine motor skills.
The skills along the path to writing are:
• Pinching activities.
• Tracing activities.
4.
5. Beginning to make drawings of real people, objects, and events.
• Encourage all efforts (stick people are beautiful when your
child draws them).
• Ask your child about his/her work.
• Keep samples and encourage your child to look at and talk
about their work.
• Hang your child's art in their room or on the refrigerator.
Addressing the impact of experience on early brain development, Dr. Bruce Perry said,
"The brain is a biological organ that allows us to do everything we do: think, walk, talk,
move, hate, love, read, not read." Dr. Perry urged that parents and educators take
advantage of the early brain's readiness for developing communication skills.
At birth, the not-yet fully developed brain is waiting for patterned, repetitive sensory
signals in the environment in order to build the appropriate organization and function. In
a continuous dynamic flux, the brain responds to the environment: sensing, perceiving,
processing, storing, and acting upon experience, whether good or bad, in order to survive.
To help children become receptive to learning, show them something familiar, then add a
twist something new or surprising. This mixture of the familiar with a little bit of novel
input allows children to feel some control over their exploration process. Once children
learn to modulate their initial alarm response to anything new, the process of learning
becomes associated with pleasure.
"When we sat down with the International Reading Association (IRA), they looked at the
revisions and felt that they didn't say enough about literacy," said Dr. Bredekamp. "So we
worked with the IRA to formulate a position statement on what developmentally
appropriate practices are in helping children learn to read and write." Teachers need to
understand a developmental continuum in literacy with knowledge of appropriate
expectations for preschool and kindergarten. At the same time, teachers have to assess
where individual children are in relationship to that developmental continuum and then
provide adaptive teaching strategies to help children make progress. Teachers also need to
understand a child's social and cultural context to be sure that they are helping the child
build on what he or she already knows.
Dr. Catherine Snow is chairperson of the National Research Council's recent report on
"Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children." She described this report as being
different from all others because its focus is on the prevention of reading difficulties. It
therefore makes recommendations for the first eight years of life, not simply what
happens in first grade. Prevention includes promoting a child's language, social, and
cognitive development as well as nurturing motivation and interest in reading and books.
Dr. Snow explained that preventing reading difficulties requires improved teacher
preparation. Skilled readers use three principles concurrently: lettersound
correspondence, reading for meaning, and reading fluently. "Now, these three principles
are not revolutionary. What's revolutionary, I think, is the notion that they've got to be
integrated at every stage." She also stated, "I strongly believe kindergarten really belongs
with three- and fouryear-old classrooms.... Formal reading should not be pushed into
kindergarten.... First grade is really the other side of a big change and approach, I think."
Dr. Alice Sterling Honig demonstrated the stages in language development from the first
sounds children utter. She traced the gradual formation of words, phrases, and sentences
into receptive and expressive language.
Dr. Honig shared examples of how we can encourage language development and
recognize progress. The richness of the "alphabet soup" that a child is exposed to makes
an enormous difference by the time he is school age. "The soup pot has to be filled with
very nourishing soup much earlier than we ever thought." Songs and chants, in addition
to reading to babies, are important in developing a passion for language.
Dr. Lilian Katz, author of The Project Approach, emphasized that children need to
acquire the disposition to use their skills as they develop them, so they need to have
something that interests them to talk or read about. Children can learn to exercise their
capacity to hypothesize, predict, and analyze at an early age. They learn naturally through
playing, but also by investigating and observing. We should encourage children to prize
complexity and to seek in-depth understanding. Illustrating her point, Dr. Katz shared her
documentation of an extended project in which the class became engrossed in drawing
and describing all they could on the subject of bikes.
Dr. Olivia Saracho, early childhood professor, reminded us about the indispensable role
of play in early childhood. Play helps develop a child's cognitive structure in addition to
developing social behavior.
Dr. Jacqueline Jones, a research scientist at the Educational Testing Service, outlined
these principles for classroom-based assessment:
• Gather multiple forms of evidence over time. No single measure will always tell
you everything that's in a child's head. Documenting children's work using video
is a wonderful instructional strategy and assessment opportunity.
• Highlight what kids know, not what they don't know.
• Look at a class as a community of learners. One-on-one assessments don't give us
a sense of how kids learn together. "Assessment should always inform practice
and always help children to grow," Jones said.
Home-School Link
Lisa Lee works with parents and teachers to move the concept of child care to family
care. Embracing families, she believes, requires viewing families as people who have a
stake in the community of care, not as recipients or customers.
Lee shared a Chinese tradition to illustrate the idea of teachers becoming part of a child's
extended family. She described a Red Egg and Ginger Party, given when a child turns one
month old, where "ginger root is passed out to friends and family because they are part of
that child's root system. And it's an acknowledgment that you'll be part of this child's life,
the root that holds this child firmly in the ground."
Lee challenges educators and publishers to think about their impact on that root system
by asking "Do we make it stronger? Do we become part of it, or do we weaken it over
time?"
First, a child develops a love for books. At the same time they are
beginning to develop eye-hand coordination.
Next, they acquire tracking skills (the ability to follow words and pages
from left to right through a book).
Next they begin to understand that words remain the same from day
to day.
Listening skills improve at about the same time. The child begins to
hear letter sounds and connect them with the written letters. Later,
he/she begins to string sounds together to make words. The child then
learns to hear and use the rhythm of the language.
Writing Skills
This is a sequence which each child passes through. One step follows
another. A lot of practice is required at each stage. First the child
begins to develop the sequence of drawing skills (from scribbling to
making representational drawings). Encourage them to draw often.
Small muscle strength needed for controlling writing instruments is
increased through activities using squeezing, pinching and cutting.
Then the child begins to recognize written names. Next he/she begins
to imitate letters and numbers for fun and then to write for a purpose.
When they receive positive feedback from interested adults, children's
skills will continue to improve at a fast pace.
Math Skills
These skills develop with much practice and we encourage their
development as the child is ready. The child begins to count for fun
(rote counting). Then they begin to see the purpose for counting and
begin counting objects in a set (meaningful counting). Next they begin
adding to or subtracting objects from a set. They begin comparing
objects in a set. Then the child begins sorting (by size, shape, color,
etc.) and ordering (by size, first-second-third, etc). They enjoy
learning to estimate (guess how many) and predict (what will happen
next). They begin to sequence objects (red, yellow, blue, red, yellow,
____). This is a slow process and requires a lot of practice. At last the
child begins to recognize numbers and associate the number with a
like number of objects. They also begin to write numbers. Later, they
will write the number words. If we make this learning fun, children will
enjoy learning math through their school years.
To encourage physical development better preschools and
daycare centers...
Thinking skills
Many cognitive skills have already been covered in other areas. Others
are covered here including some requested by parents and by
kindergarten teachers.
Color bingo.
Color card games like "Go Fish".
Notice and comment when the child has finished the job.
If the job is not finished, give reminders and have
patience.
Catch your child doing chores on his/her own and thank
them.
painting at the easel. Each of them has a jar of blue paint and a jar of
yellow paint. Suddenly George yells, "Look, 'Keisha, I made green!"
"How did you do it?" asks Lakeisha. "I put yellow paint on top of my
blue paint - yellow and blue put together make green!" yells George.
Other children gather around to watch and ask for a turn. The teacher
wonders aloud what would happen if they mixed other colors. She
allows the children to explore colors and and help her chart their color
discoveries with words and color samples.
This is an example of discovery learning or hands-on learning. One
child made a discovery about 2 colors mixing to form a new color.
Many children explored other colors to make new discoveries. They
charted them and posted the chart so they could use it for a reference.
They learned by doing. You see this kind of activity going on daily in
quality preschools and child care centers around the country.
Research has shown that people remember things better when they
learn them by doing. This is even true for adults. Here is an
example. You want to learn how to play softball so that you can join a
team. How will you learn to play?
Will you:
1. Buy a book and read about how to play softball.
2. Watch a video about softball.
3. Ask a friend who plays to grab a ball, bat, and glove and teach you.
Which way will help you learn the game the best? Choice 3 is the best
way for most people because they actually get to try the game and
learn the rules as they play. They learn in a hands-on way.
Hands on learning is good for both children and adults. The learner is
actively involved instead of just sitting and listening. This is the way
we want our children to learn and we know that research backs us up.
In order to learn best, children must be actively involved in hands-on
activities every day. Some good examples of hands-on activities are:
working puzzles, making collages, painting, measuring ingredients for
you as you cook, counting out napkins to set the table, playing simple
board games together, sorting silverware into piles of forks, knives,
and spoons, looking at books, and buttoning, zipping, and tying. You
will be surprised at how much your child can do and how fast he/she
can learn.
You are invited to participate with your child in many meaningful
learning experiences - experiences using hands-on learning.

* ماذا لو؟
* ماذا لو لم ؟
* كيف؟
* لماذا......؟
